Chances on a new Darius?
Considering this is Darius's 20th anniversary what do you all think the chances are of a new Darius being made within the next years? Anyone heard anything that even slightly hints towards this? All i've found is the gogamemusic interview with OGR where he says he would like to one day do the soundtrack for another Darius, but obviously that doesnt really mean much.
Seeing as Darius is my all time fav shooter series, a new one would be supreme mega awesomness. Fighting giant fish in space = max awesome. I just hope if one gets made its a arcade or console game not on a handheld.

All I know is that he produced the two Boxsets of last year. And him retiring ? Doubt it, at 47 this year and still having lots of creative energy in him... I think we'll hear about him soon. It's possible he might be disgruntled about Square-Enix having bought the company he worked at for so long. And if he's currently freelancing, I wish the best for the guy. Of course, a new Darius would be awesome. And I totally approve the possibility of G.Rev developping it for Taitozinger wrote:Hehe yeah...Andi wrote:The way I see it, Darius Gaiden had so many levels and bosses, will we ever need a new Darius game?
What is OGR up to at the moment anyway? Is there anything left for him to do at Taito, is he freelancing, or even retired?
Little factoid : OGR was born approximately a week and a half after Nobuo Uematsu. Wouldn't say no if Squeenix chooses to do a USA Black Mages/Zuntata concert in the coming year(s)

Well he gives a interview on the Darius Premium Box DVD that was released last year, so I guess he's still with Taito...dunno exactly what he's doing. Taito dont really seem to be releasing that many original games anymore just publishing stuff.
Edit: Looks like dragon god beat me to answering the question.

After doing a bit of research I wouldnt exactly say 'the team that did G-Darius became G rev' because only about 5 dudes from the huge G-darius team are in G-rev, and they are mostly programmers/artists with the exception of 1 that was a director, although G-Darius had 4 directors (one of the directors worked on Darius 2 as well)
Even so G Rev is probably still best suited for making a new darius, unless Taito go digging up a team of old Darius developers

You know what I'd like to see? A Darius compliation... a real one.
Darius
Darius II
Darius Gaiden
G-Darius
... with Darius Twin and Darius Force as unlockable extras. Darius and Darius II would have a choice of the same scaling trick used for the Saturn version of Darius II, or tweaked like the TG-16 versions to fit on a single screen, and the original soundtracks would be there as well (no remixed stuff).
That would be something I'd buy in heartbeat.

Except for sushi fish just don't get cooler than the Darius games
. I was a bit dissapointed with the ports included with Taito Legends (waah missing the cool Playstation intros, and ugg the ugly loading screens why not just a black screen while loading).
I would too have preferred a Darius compilation. Preferably with a new Darius game too, or a remake of G Darius (low resolution 3D hurts my eyes, and those wobbly pixelated textures, the game is so cool but has not aged gracefully like good ol 2D games).

I also agree g-darius doesnt look so great with the exception however of the bosses which are just amazing, It feels like a ps2 game when you are fighting queen fossil and such. From a gameplay standpoint I also think they are the best boss battles in a shooter ever just because of how epic some of them are and the way your ship flips around like in darius 2. Some of the longest boss battles ever in a shooter but they are never boring.

I hate to burst your bubble, but at the time G.Rev made border down, they had only 5 employees; hardly the entire team of any one of those games, and I don't think any of them worked on any Darius games besides G Darius. The influence is obvious, but that doesn't mean they were solely responsible for developing that style.Fighter17 wrote:I don't know because the people who developed G Darius left Taito and founded G Rev. If you play Border Down, you can tell that the game was developed by the same guys who made Raystorm, Raycrisis, and G Darius.
That said one of the reasons G. Rev formed was because Taito was scaling back in its in-house arcade development, and they felt strongly about developing arcade games. So it's entirely possible that the other members of the Darius teams have also scattered to the winds, which would leave us with the same conclusion.
If G.Rev teamed up with some of the artists from Darius Gaiden's team, I bet they could churn out a worth successor, though. As much as any other team at the moment. But frankly, Border Down was really good enough, probably better than any of the Darius games, and very much in a similar style. I'd rather see RayForce ressurected.

yeah, I'm trying to think of any "Taito" game recently that was actually developed by them. All shmup developers aside (which I'm sure you're all familiar with) I just keep coming up with companies like Garakuta Studio (Graffiti Kingdom), Red (Bujingai), Blue Moon Studio (Tsukiyo ni Saraba/10,000 Bullets), Happy Happening (Bust a Move DS), Dreams (Space Invaders Revolution, Bubble Bobble Revolution), Lancarse (Mawashite Koron, Puzzle Bobble DS) etc. Although I suppose some of them could be internal Taito development teams... and I'm not overly familiar with their recent arcade output, some of that could be in-house as well.Macaw wrote: Taito dont really seem to be releasing that many original games anymore just publishing stuff.

not really, Taito has officially stopped doing arcade games in 1998, i think that Raycrisis and Super Puzzle Bobble were their last titles. It is mentioned in full detail in the "small guns" Edge article, i think.

Speaking of Darius Gaiden I just recently noticed that in the ending credits Hisayoshi Ogura is listed as being one of the game designers (in adition to the music), whats going on here I never knew about this!!
Unless there happened to be by chance another dude who's name was also Hisayoshi Ogura???

Konami and Treasure, maybe? Sounds good.Macaw wrote:Maybe Taito should just get G rev to make the next darius :P
At this point I don't really care if a new Darius would be polygonal or not; we've seen the last (I hope) of the ugly ones. Certainly if it came to something newer than the Dreamcast or PS2 it'd look amazing.
