The hardest thing in any shmup -- a mouthy wife
Any one else have a wife that just loves to come in and blab right in the middle of some heated shit! Man... borderline domestic violence in my house.

LMAO!
With me its the kids, my 4 year old will often press start on 2p on my cab in a heated level 4 bullet spread.
Then I shout at him and scare him, then the wife comes in with a broom and batters me for upsetting the kid. Okay, im lying about the last bit, but its happened alot.
On my other cab, I have puzzle bobble 2, when the 4yo joins in on that game, it totally resets everything "here comes a challenger" prompts the screen.
Its all part of being married dude, no spare time, no privacy, no quiet.. Sometimes I wonder why I bother buying all my stuff, I never really can appreciate it 100%.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

As long as we keep buying all our stuff, we'll be OK. Even if we never have a chance to use it.

Hey, I lived together with a girl for 1,5 years and it was pretty close to that. And whenever I'd get a new game in the mail she'd say "you got something AGAIN?" I'm sure you can guess the tone of voice used there...
Ah well. Got all the time and privacy for myself now, but that's not totally fun, either.

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Man, I understand this fully. My wife gets so pissed when I get something new. She was pretty tolerant, but now we have an 8 month old and she gets pissed beyond belief. It is not as if I am starving the baby; he has food, clothes, every toy under the sun and a pretty well funded college fund. The rest imy income to do something with, in my opinion. Especially considering, my wife does not work and I give her $2000 a month.
My wife is pretty good about the talking while playing, what she is not good at is constantly telling me I need to look at something while I am playing. I try to tell her, this is not a console, there is no pause button. I suck at these games and I will be done in 5 minutes, but nothing can ever wait. I must turn my head to see her foot is cut or her shoulder is throbbing.

A huge battleship: Wife is approaching fast!
Ha, I know what you mean!
I mean, here I am, just got my Gunbird 2 and Twin Cobra PCBs in and I'm trying to get in some practice time. Feels like every time I start a game, a few minutes later I hear "Can you come look at this?" or some other kind of question. Yeah, I'll be totally happy to help you with that right after this game. Oops, now I died because I was trying to talk to you across the length of the house. I guess I can come help you now.
Seriously, she is very supportive of letting me buy the games. I just need to get her to recognize that a certain high level of concentration is needed to *PLAY* the games.

It's the same thing with my wife, yet she's very understanding and realises that gaming is a passion of mine. However just as i seem to get in the "zone" when playing shmups, that is when she needs me to look at something and then pifft it's gone and i die a stupid death.
Having said that she's understanding is cool yet i find myself reluctant to tell her that i've just won a Batsugun pcb.

Guys: I totally feel your pain
Only thing: with me, it's my mother I have to put up with
I have screwed up more than once because she's asked me something totally moronic (OK, in that moment)...typically on the research she's doing or on a crossword puzzle clue, or what a nuisance our cook is. And then, she sometimes says something totally moronic (again, see above) like: "Oh, enemies X are giving you trouble, aren't they?) when some bastards in Truxton are handing my ass to me. And if I do not pay her sufficient attention- BANG
I am in the doghouse for a good deal of time.
Man, I really needed this thread. I can tell you that

This happened to me last night. I was just about to get a new high score on 'Galuda, and in comes my GF, who promptly asks me why my foot isn't up on the couch with an icepack (I had screwed it up pretty bad the night before, almost breaking two toes). Bang! Instant death...
So I'm feeling everybody's pain here, but...
Would you rather have all of the privacy that you crave, so that you can play all the time without interruption? Or would you rather have someone really cool to share your life with, get laid on a regular basis, and have to deal with the odd minor annoyance?
Just a thought...

That's me. ACtually, my mother seems to always leave me alone... but I just need to begin concentrating in something, and then she starts asking me every kind of stuff.Tar-Palantir wrote:Guys: I totally feel your painOnly thing: with me, it's my mother I have to put up with

As I don't live with my girlfriend (But with my mother, heh), I don't have much of trouble with her. Whenever she's here, I rarely ever am playing something... and a couple of times she tried do play something with me

My parents don't bother me too much in a middle of a game, but they occansionily interrupt to bring lunch, which is distracting, but fine. What bothers me a bit more is when my headache gets really bad or when my hands get tired.
BL, you are so lucky. Most of my friends that I know in real life don't play video games much. I don't support live in girlfriends, though. I don't mean any offense, I just don't want anyone getting the wrong idea. When or if I get engaged, I won't be living with my girlfriend until after marriage.

lucky man. i don't really know any girls who play games, let alone the games i play. come to think of it (off topic) the only person who will listen to me talk about shmups (aside from all of you) is this kid in my neighborhood, and after i am done, he'll start on about Halo 2 or some such nonsenseBlue Lander wrote:I happen to be blessed with a girlfriend who prefers watching me play shmups to playing them herself, so I can't say I've ever had this problem. She plays a lot of video games herself (she can 1cc Contra, I'm so jealous!), so she knows it's important not to break one's concentration.

Oh, we don't live togeather (not until marriage), but I spent a lot of time over at her place. She has a NES, SNES, Genesis, Playstation 2, Gamecube, and X-Box, so I just have to bring the shmups over (sometimes I'll bring a Turbo Duo, too). Mostly she just watches me play, but sometimes we play Ikaruga togeather. She's started to develop a taste for Compile shmups (mostly Spriggan and Blazing Lazers), though, so I guess we'll be sharing the controller more often!BrianC wrote: I don't support live in girlfriends, though. When you get engaged, you will support live in fiancee because as you try to save money there is no reason to have double expenses. Morals are great, but there is something just as moral as saving money so the two of you can lead a life.

In the twenty first century, these are known as 'partners'. It's even a legal status now.BrianC wrote:I don't support live in girlfriends, though.
Anyway - back to the point, I get a lot of hassle (see: guilt trips) while I'm playing X-Box Live, which is a lot of the time. While my girlfriend frequently spends time on forums, reading books, listening to music etc and ignores me as much as I ignore her (perhaps the wrong word), if she wants to say something to me no matter how trivial, I am guilt tripped if I want to see a game round through (usually, about 2 minutes). This is usually done by standing staring at me, or sometimes stomping away to another room.
You just have to live with it.

the hardest thing = a girl that takes over the ps2 >:o
why is there nothing to play on the other consoles? we keep splitting our ps2 time with care. you gotta do sacrifices when you love someone ^^
i hate to reveal my intimacy online, but this one is funny:
i was in the room playing DDPDOJ, having pretty much my best run yet, at stage 3 boss with a good score (for my standarts) many lives left and even a hyper to unleash if the last pattern got too tense. for some reason she came in and started to kiss me in the cheek and neck, suffice to say, i lost all my lives.
i couldnt yell at her for some strange reason, tho.

Well said. It really depends on your priorities. At the same time, couples should respect each other's quiet time for hobbies and such. However, when games becomes a compulsive behavior, that's certainly a reason for the wife to intrude whenever necessary.MadSteelDarkness wrote:Would you rather have all of the privacy that you crave, so that you can play all the time without interruption? My wife works nights at her restaurant, so I usually have plenty of time to play games and watch stupid movies. But honestly, I'd rather have her around...

Sorry, I couldn't resist stating the obvious.
Nevermind, just bought a nice white Jap saturn on ebay. My Mrs can sit watching me play Sexy Parodius (with my 5-month-old on my knee) whilst she moans about the state of the house.

What Kiken and I don't look forward to is now we're going to be gaining a new roommate, one whose girlfriend is absolutely miserable to put up with, while playing games or not.
For us, there's only one telly set up. [We have two, but there's really no room to utilize the second yet.] It explains why I've been doing mostly computer stuff lately, though. The vagrant wrote:the hardest thing = a girl that takes over the ps2 >:o

oh ok. I understand. I meant no disrespect. I was stating my beliefs becuase I didn't want my last statment to make it look like I supported something that I didn't. I see that you have a tough situation. That roommate thing does sound like a beast.Minzoku wrote:I live with Kiken because the alternative was living with my ex, which was sheer hellBrianC wrote:I don't support live in girlfriends, though. Rooming with someone else is vital in this area--it's way too expensive to live alone. It's practicality, not immorality.

There is no need to tell me to live in the 21st century. I'm not changing my beliefs to cater to other people, but I do respect that your beliefs don't match my own. Again, I was just stating my beliefs. They are not your beliefs and I'm not telling you how to live.

Yeah, the housing market in the Northern Virginia/Maryland area is just absurdly expensive. In the past it was okay because there were lots of high paying jobs during the dot.com boom, but it's getting harder and harder to find jobs around here.Minzoku wrote:Rooming with someone else is vital in this area--it's way too expensive to live alone.
