Alien: Convent

Two major issues with the new saga confirmed:

1. Xenomorphs are only some kind of freaky engineered super-adaptable bioweapon. This again totally kills their aura as a terrifying intelligent alien species lurking from the darkest corners of space. Instead they're made like some sort of evolving pokemon and whoever engineered them or uses them is the antagonist, fuck that shit.

2. the fucking robot is a psycho and that's the story in this episode period, fuck that shit.

It wasn't all bad if taken as a standalone sci-fi action flick, better than Prometheus, but still far behind 2 and inferior to all first three as an 'Alien' movie.

Alas, the best thing about Deer Woman movie is the title after all. Which still is rather aplenty, but to top that, A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell had its unforgettable trailer, too.

Might actually go to see Homecoming based on expectations zero and good feedback here, but I heard his fat Asian loser youtube caricature friend is completely intolerable and partly ruins the entire movie.

He's your usual high school friend alright, though not to the point of being a irresponsible cringeworthy dunce, unless you get really hung up over minor background details. He suits the setting and tone of the movie without being overdone Generation Y-bait as is usually the case.

Ned the nerd is annoying for Peter Parker, as a proper high school mate should be, not for the audience. Like a lot of other elements in the film, he's so realistic that he appears strange.
The excessive and stereotypical aspects have a purpose: he's unpopular to make Peter Parker unpopular by association, he's somewhat immature to make Peter appear more mature, he helps with things Spiderman is usually able to manage without help to reiterate the point that being a superhero doesn't exclude people from human society.

Conspirators of Pleasure (Spiklenci slasti) - no spoken dialogue, like in Le Dernier Combat, so there's no need for any subs. Speaking of 12 Monkeys, the original La Jetée holds up (12 Monkeys is pretty much a remake). And speaking of Hardware - I liked another one by Richard Stanley - Brave (although it's a music film and I didn't like the OST one bit). One midlife crisis movie, though.

Very respectable effort. Bill Paxton is quite good here. I believe he appears with his father, John Paxton, in one very natural scene.
Bridget Fonda is suitably cold and Billy Bob Thornton is effortlessly believable.

What didn't you like about the 3rd act? It had one of the funniest scenes in the movie.

Justice League Dark-Very enjoyable movie focusing mostly on the more paranormal DC characters. It was nice finally seeing Swamp Thing in an animated feature. Etrigan was also in full rhyme mode. Batman was added to the animated version because he's Batman and awesome.

I've not seen it in like 15 years... need to go back. Billy Bob is indeed good in the right roll. I thought he was excellent in the first season of Fargo, but basically everything has been great in every season.

By the way, I could not find your review of The Master (2012) - Paul Thomas Anderson. I would have liked to have read it.

It was pretty short. Basically "two amazing performances in a film that doesn't go much of anywhere". Maybe I expected too much, but I felt like it was a series of amazingly performed duets & whatnot.

As if to reinforce the impression of a piratical joke, the film's theme song "Writing's on the Wall", written by James Napier and Sam Smith, "sung" by Sam Smith was so bad, I had to check that the whole affair was kosher and not some fucking inside joke.
I wish I had not. Sam smith, who cites Adele as one of his main influences . . . . . . . , is for real. This affected, talentless, overproduced twat is a "Star"?

ALICE (1988) by Jan Svankmajer (cheated to write his name)

Best adaptation of the book by Lewis Carroll. The film understand WHY the book is what it is. So, Alice is the only character with an actress, everything else being objects that move by stop motion. Alice also do all the voices, so it's like the movie was inside the dream of a child. Svankmajer also done a lot of short films, so you can watch one of those first to get an idea. Highly recomended.

Indeed. There were, no doubt, many songs considered and surely many were superior and more apt for the film.

Monty Norman/John Barry controversy aside, Bond soundtracks have been fine. Its the song chosen to accompany and represent the different films, where things can go arseways.
Barry showed how its done on the soundtrack to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969) - Peter R. Hunt". As well as a superb effort on the score, Barry wrote "We Have All the Time in the World".
The lyrics were by Hal David and it was sung by Louis Armstrong. This "Bond" song had one goal; to "fit" the film and it did, like a glove. Which is my point.
Sam Smith, Chris Cornell, Jack White/Alicia Keys . . . it seems the primary input is being made here by music companies. Which is why we get the unlikely Mr. Sam Smith.

This type of company method, when applied to films and every other God forsaken "product", results in a collapse in quality, which is why many of us cranky fuckers are so upset

The Great Mouse Detective- Lives up to its name. Fun movie with some nice Sherlock Holmes references. Some nice voice actors like Alan Young and Vincent Prince in it too. I loved Vincent Price as Ratigan, the main villain.

Saw Spiderman: Homecoming with the family.
It was okay. I did like the Vulture in it a lot. Young Spiderman was kind of annoying, but it fits with how old he is.
I've got a 15yo nephew that's visiting and we saw it because he wanted to go, and he's a bit annoying.

but the Marvel formula is starting to grate on me a bit because there's no sign of anything changing in it at all, it's basically settled on being just a bit too quippy for its own good
like, everyone's a smart-ass -- that was fine in Iron Man because that's established as part of the character, but everyone shouldn't be doing that shit all the time

The formula is also kind of uninterested in telling a story, which sucks. I think the last of them I really enjoyed a lot was Winter Soldier, and I can't even remember why at this point [but I also remember it not being a movie full of smartmouths, which probably helped].
Spiderman's fucking friend here sucks ass, too.

also as far as I can tell, Spiderman didn't do much wrong other than being an annoying kid looking for glory [which wouldn't have been so bad, but considering the sheer lack of respect he got kind of compounded the problem] and when he disabled the tracker -- which should have been detected anyway once it became obvious that he was in the same spot for as long as it was, Happy was a useless fuckup the entire time

Also, why the fuck was no one on board the plane?
Hell, the lack of alarms from when Spiderman was locked in that top-secret base was fucking retarded too.

I'm not sure what you are expecting. Spider-Man has always been quippy, though he's usually much less of the jerk than Deadpool (one thing, from what I have seen, that the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon got wrong). A Spider-Man movie wouldn't be Spider-Man without quips.
