I hate being the nitpicky bastard when it comes to RPGs (hate the genre now), but Potions heal HP, Ether heals MP. I have to go hurt myself now for correcting this mistake >listens to Linkin Park<

Why was Final Fantasy VI the only game in the series that used Tincture to restore MP?

You know, I seem to recall a T-shirt with Curious George in a Bottle of Ether.

Let's just say Curious George isn't so curious anymore.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

By the way I got some Ether that actually work. Would you be interested?

It got no effect to people with 0 as MP Max though. :o Nor to people who couldn't spend any MP due to not knowing any spells. :o

Did the Japanese version list the item as Tincture? (don't have it in front of me at the moment)

Edit:
Just popped it in. The Japanese version is "Ether".
I blame "Tincture" on the translator. Other things were changed in the US release for no discernable reason.

If ether what I think it means, how the hell does it recover MP in Final Fantasy games? Shouldn't it knock them out and cause brain damage instead?

I assume they huff it in as well......

"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon."

Probably because that was the first game where there were 2 MP restoring items: Ether and Hi-Ether. Ted Woolsey likely thought that Hi-Ether sounded dumb so he made his usual liberal changes.
