I'm considering trying to get one of those 34" widescreen XBR 960/970/910 sets for mid gen consoles like the xbox/ps2/wii games.
Also what is the superfinepitch the 960 has? Is it worth it to try and find a 960 set for that?
Is this a waste of time? or am I better suited using my OSSC.

According to wiki it's a higher line count than the hi-scan sets. In practice I don't find it to be noticeably different for DVD/gen 6 stuff. They've got some extra options like de-emphasis for reds and such.citrus3000psi wrote:I'm considering trying to get one of those 34" widescreen XBR 960/970/910 sets for mid gen consoles like the xbox/ps2/wii games.

I have one that I'd offer you for free if you lived closer or don't mind traveling a ways

super fine pitch tube in the 960 can resolve 1440 pixels on the horizontal axis, while the HiScan tube can resolve 853.
I would personnally love a 960 for the consoles you describe. but there's no denying that it's a bulky tv
That youtube video of a super fine pitch widescreen tube displaying Contra Hard Corps Uprising has always made me want a 960. Picture looks dope. (watch in 720p)

If you play a lot of 4:3 games there was also a 4:3 36" Super Fine Pitch KD-36XS955 (same tube as 960, but without Firewire and PIP). I ended up selling my XBR910 and getting this as many GC/Xbox games didn't have widescreen and I have mine connected to an OSSC for older 240P consoles. The extra real estate for 4:3 games is worth the extra 40lbs. Hope you have some strong friends to help move it.

I still have mine and I love playing modern content as well on it.
I will say I've never seen a better way to play Zelda skyward sword. I would play it more but it's so heavy.

for 4:3 I have the pioneer 40" plasma and a 20" pvm. I keep my retro consoles in the back room, and everything with HDMI in the front room. I'm thinking about moving the PVM to the closet and dropping one these beasts in. I used to have a Sony KD-XBR960, and it was really great. The colors, contrast and black levels were absolutely stunning, and the picture is fantastic for GameCube/Wii/XBox/PS3/PS2/XBox360. Probably one of the best displays ever for watching HD TV Channels as they broadcast in 1080i, which is the TV's resolution.
