Gamecrazy had a sale going on where they where offering buy 3 (classic games) for $15. This included all cartridge games (except gba-ds games) and dreamcast games. Well I got raiden project (just game), r-type delta (complete), and starcraft 64 (game only) for $15 also truxton (game only)for $2.
Gleylancer, complete and in great shape for $4 at an EB. They new it was a Genesis game, but the name wasn't on their computer's game list. So they put it in the "other" category with the likes of 32X games at the time, and that category went for a uniform $4.

Wow! I still think I got a good deal, getting gleylancer (mint, complete) for 30 bucks (including shipping from Japan), but $4???
Yep, similar kind of deal here. I think mine was a little bit more, maybe 40 quid sealed. The same store then had a used copy a little later in mint condition for 35 quid which I picked up and gave to a friend. That was a long time ago, though - just after the game was originally released.

Yeah, same here. Got it just after release. Kind of makes up for paying £70 for Xmen vs Street Fighter at the same store Thank fuck for the Internet and play-asia, liksang etc......
Thunder Force V: Perfect System (PSX) for $4.
RayStorm (PSX) for $6.
Darius Twin, boxed with manual, for $6.
Galactic Atta--I MEAN, RayForce (Saturn), for $7. >_>
R-Types (PSX) for $12.

Got three Panorama Cotton Tea cups from SunSoft on eBay for £10 I think it was. Two of them still boxed, all in new/mint condition. I doubt the seller knew of their importance/scarcity as all his other auctions indicated he wasn't a gamer.
I actually drink my coffees from the one that was unboxed.
zinger: Certainly was a bit of luck involved. 'Twas only the second or third time that I searched for them on eBay. Wasn't even a BuyItNow auction. Put my bid in and hoped no one would find the auction and start a bidding war. No one did. I think it was partially 'cos the auction was named somewhat awkward and thus wouldn't show on the usual searches.
Probably Ikaruga for GC, which I picked up used at a Babbages for $17 (I used me GS card!) about a month or so before it shot up to $50, used, on Amazon. I don't know what happened, this was over a year after Maddox advertised it.
...but it's not as bad as what DQVIII did to the price of DQVII. Holy shit.
EDIT: Forgot to say how much I bought it for. Heh.
Got Gradius V for 5 GBP, R-Type Final for 4 GBP and Steel Dragon Ex for 3 GBP, all brand new. Though, Steel Dragon Ex was pretty crappy. All of these were from GameStation, the only store that seems to stock shmups!
about a year ago I got an original, working (and dusty) Flying Shark PCB from eBay for 11.00 US
and later on I picked up an original working Fire Shark board for 29.00 US
yea, I really haven't found any great shmup deals...
Radiant Silvergun new and sealed for $52 off ebay back in November '99. Back then it was already fetching really high prices. I was surprised when I found the auction that it had no reserve and just a few bids. I was even more surprised that absolutely no bidding war broke out over it at the last few hours, like me and only two people noticed it was there. I only had to bid once. Right place and the right time.
A month later I got a sealed Soukyugurentai for $48 from Wolfgames. Then a few months later I finally got my modded Saturn (also from wolfgames) and enjoyed these two awesome games for the first time. Other two best deals I can think of were Mars Matrix and GW 2 for just $19.99 a piece when they were first released for DC (Capcom sure was good to us back then).

Congrats!
Heh. It surprised the hell out of me too. It looked like it was a rental in Japan, as it had traces of that residue left behind from the "VOID" stickers rental stores use. But that cleaned off easily.
I think the other best deal I got on a shmup was the copy of Power Strike II that I found at a flea market. It cost me about $6, but it was complete... as was the SMS copy of Ninja Gaiden (yes, there's an original NG game on the Master System). It was about $6 too, so needless to say, I grabbed both.
Well my best shmup deal would be Radiant Silvergun. I have a GameXchange here is town. It's basically a used video game place. Anyway, a guy was trading in some old Saturn games, but he had some imports also but GameXchange wouldn't take them in because they weren't American games. So he had a copy of Radiant Silvergun (which I had only heard of at that point) so I offered him $80 and we made the deal right then and there. One of the best purchases I've made in a long time.
Great people I've had deals with:
superhitachi4, KyleRXZero, Canadianzombie, Wanderer, and Strider77.
A few years back, I saw a dude selling his small collection of Seibu Kaihatsu SP-1 game cartridges, including a SP-1 cart of Viper Phase 1. It usually sells for $150.00 USD with an SP-1 motherboard.
I snagged the SP-1 Viper Phase 1 USA cart for a mere $20.00 USD off of eBay. Best twenty bucks spent on a classic arcade shmup title. ^_~
Pop n' Twin Bee, Darius Twin, Axelay, Super Aleste, Super R-Type and Cotton 100% perfectly sealed, all NTSC/J, brand new, for $30 (Cotton had the single CD included as well)... ten years ago or so.
A shop was closing and selling all his import stuff. Too bad noone knew it (because it mainly sold telephones and other apparels) and I bought like 20 games, all japanese, there. They were giving away the Laserd Disc console from pioneer with three games - one of them was a shmup.
As far as shmups go, I'm usually paying a premium, but I do recall a most excellent, cheap ass shmup purchase about 3 months ago. A local gamestore chain recently got a bunch of sealed DC games in at two of their store locations. At one of the locations, they happened to have both Mars Matrix and Giga Wing 2 up for sale, still sealed. Not having price tags on them, I reluctantly asked the clerk how much they were going for. He said "$10 each"... Oh yeah, needless to say I did not hesitate.
Radiant Silvergun*
MegamanX4
Shining wisdom
some KoF('95?)
longsleave puma zip-up
all for $25 (basement score from good childhood friend, yes I told him it was worth much more, *but the disk was so trashed only Saturn mode works, which is fine by me)
as others have already mentioned ...
gigawing2, gunbird2, bangai-o: $20 each new on release
castle shikigami 2: $10
Rez PS2: $20 bestbuy clearance (I grabbed multiple copies to give to friends)
