PS2 controller to Nintendo Switch. Possible?
So I have a HORI Real Arcade Pro 2 SA for PS2 that I got new many years ago.
The reason I went with it, is because I could easily find adapters to play on PS3, XBOX 360, as well as a plethora of old game systems.
I currently have a PS2 to PS3 adapter and I see that Brooks has announced after the Switch 3.0 update, that their PS3/PS4 to Wii U Super Converter is now Switch compatible.
Would I be able to daisy chain this converter along with my older PS2 to PS3 converter? Would this even work? Would it introduce so much lag it wouldn't be worth it?
I could always hope for a PS2 to Switch converter, but the hardware is old now, so I imagine there isn't as much demand these days.

My guess is eventually we'll have something. It took ages for someone to release a high quality adapter for PS2 controllers to PS3/4 but it happened eventually there too.

Congrats on the HRAP2SA, it's such a cool stick
Anyway yeah, chaining adapters will inevitably add lag. Aside for any possible Switch implementation of the virtual console service (I'm not very well informed on that), I don't think the Switch will be an arcade powerhouse so for the 2-3 titles available if you find lag too much to bear you may want to buy a cheap PS3 stick (like the Hori fighting stick V3) and use that with the one converter you linked.

Are you referring to the Brook adapter, or is there another one I don't know about? The one by Brook looks good but they don't seem to put latency high in their priority list (for example, their PS3 to PS4 adapter adds a frame of lag or more (link).Taiyaki wrote:It took ages for someone to release a high quality adapter for PS2 controllers to PS3/4 but it happened eventually there too.

Thanks! I'm very lucky to have preordered it when it was new.Xer Xian wrote:Congrats on the HRAP2SA, it's such a cool stick![]()

The converter I already have for PS2 to PS3 is, according to the Shoryuken Forums when I got it, almost lagless. I guess I'm wondering, if this makes sense, if 1+1=2, or is it a 1+1=3 kind of situation?
I can wait a bit, right now, mostly I want it for Street Fighter II and a few of the Neo Geo ports, but I imagine with it's popularity, there will be enough in the future to make me crave a nice arcade stick. Blade Strangers is a good example. Another reason I don't really want a bunch of sticks, is limited space. I live in Japan, so one quality stick is all I really want around.

Re: PS2 controller to Nintendo Switch. Possible?
Well most consoles/adapters sample for inputs once within a given (usually fixed) interval, so when you chain them the latency (over the base one with no adapters) can go from zero (if the adapters' polling windows happen to fall entirely into the console's own window) to the sum of all the polling rates involved (when each device samples for inputs right before the next one in the chain). So the cumulative latency is not fixed but is more of a random number. The variability depends on how frequently each device samples for inputs.gatsu25 wrote:The converter I already have for PS2 to PS3 is, according to the Shoryuken Forums when I got it, almost lagless. So, as an example, if two adapters sample for inputs every 5 and 10 milliseconds respectively, the added latency can go from 0 to 15 milliseconds, but will on average hover around 7-8 milliseconds (by the way, this is an important threshold for 60Hz games since with an added input lag of over 8 milliseconds there's more than a 50% probability that your input will be rendered on the next frame).
This is all in theory though. If you are not very sensitive to lag, then it's possible that chaining adapters won't be an issue.

Re: PS2 controller to Nintendo Switch. Possible?
Thanks for the help. That makes a lot of sense.
I think for now, I'll wait and see if Brooks decides to make a PS2 to Switch adapter. I already emailed them asking if they had plans.
If it doesn't come anytime soon, and there are too many Switch games I would like an adapter for, I might take the plunge on this route.

On their website it says that these also work on the original Wii but I can't see any documentation on that feature anywhere or any examples of people doing it on the net. If I can get confirmation this works on an original Wii then I'll snap buy one. I've got a PS2 to PS3 converter so if I get it I can test for you.

Re: PS2 controller to Nintendo Switch. Possible?
Yes the Brook adapter is the first that works reliably as far as I know. Gee that links rates the PS3 to PS4 adapter horribly, that 10+ms of lag is serious. That was an early device though, the PS2 to PS3/PS4 is seemingly better built. Also arcade shops have been selling them out and recommending it so I would have to guess they stepped up their game. I wonder if there are tests available somewhere for it, but in my experience I didn't notice any additional lag, at least nothing that got in the way, and I play games like Guilty Gear and other fighters where lag would definitely be noticed.Xer Xian wrote:Are you referring to the Brook adapter, or is there another one I don't know about? At least on the website, it says the "classic edition" works with the original wii. I am not finding anything else either though after looking a bit. Is the "classic, pro, standard, and Switch" Editions just different firmware? That would be awesome if you eventually can test it out. Actually, I would email them, and confirm with them if they mean Wii console, or Wii U running in Wii mode.DoomsDave wrote:On their website it says that these also work on the original Wii but I can't see any documentation on that feature anywhere or any examples of people doing it on the net. Related to that, I emailed them asking about a PS2 to Switch converter, and I was given the response, "Thank you for the feedback. We will evaluate the possibility for that." So, better than a no I suppose.

If you live in Japan, you can consider to buy the HORI arcade stick for Nintendo switch.

Right, I know of it. This is a better stick though, and I don't want to spend the money or take up the space of having another.juji82 wrote:If you live in Japan, you can consider to buy the HORI arcade stick for Nintendo switch.

This was my assumption. Same dongle but you just flash it with whatever firmware you want.
This was also my suspicion. I'll email them and see what they say.Wii U running in Wii mode.

I pulled the trigger and bought both ps and xbox dongles because I'll use them on the Switch/Wii U anyway and right after I bought them I got an email back saying they'll work on an original Wii so that's cool. I'll report back when I test out PS2 to brook to switch.

If you're still interested I got the Brooks converter today and tested it with my PS2 to PS3 converter and can confirm it work.
