Crimson Clover - Steam won't go vertical HD

Post by waiwainl »

Just purchased CC from Steam; works great, except when I want to TATE my setup.

The in-game graphics options are HOR-SD, HOR-HD, VER-SD, VER-HD.
But when I select VER_HD, the "Apply" button turns dark, hence I cannot play the game vertically in HD.
The HOR_HD and VER_SD works just fine.

System is a normal Win10, GeForce 8 series (1080p). Other games work fine in VER-HD mode.

Is anybody able to play CC in VER_HD ?
Any idea what I do wrong? Suggestions.

Thanks! :D

I just use the Ver-SD option with 640 x 480 resolution when using a laptop + an Ultracade uVC that gives me a working res of 320 x 240 to use on my Japanese candy cab. Easy as pie. As a bonus, the obligatory scanlines are present on a dual res 15/24kHz arcade monitor setup.

There's the standalone CD-Rom version of Crimson Clover but that'd be versions 1.0 & 1.1 respectively.

For what it's worth, I've never been able to make it work in vertical HD.

I have 3 screens (4 actually) here, two vertical 1080x1920 and a horizontal 2560x1440.

It doesn't go vertical HD on either of these.

I have a horizontal 1920x1080 monitor and a vertical 1200x1920 monitor, and I've only managed to get CC:WI to run in vertical HD by disabling the horizontal monitor so the vertical monitor is the only one detected. Otherwise it doesn't let me set the resolution to allow vertical HD, as I think it's getting its available resolutions from the horizontal monitor.

But OP's problem sounds different from mine since he can actually select the option, the screen just goes black when he does so.

This seems to happen in the GoG version too. I'm on a single monitor setup - if you run the game with your system set to a horizontal mode, you can't select the Low-V or High-V modes as Apply is blacked out when you try to select them (you can still rotate and play on the standard Low and High modes).

The way to fix it is to rotate the actual screen in Windows to a Portrait orientation, then run the game. It'll let you switch to Low-V or High-V then. However, the screen will be totally black in fullscreen if Vsync is set to Off. You have to change Vsync to On (which adds slight input lag) to view the game fullscreen.

It's a lot less fiddly usually to just stick with the High mode and rotate the screen.

It seems the only proper solution is to keep HOR-HD and do the rotation within the game (option below the 'Apply').
Not ideal, but workable.

Hi,

so you mean you literally rotate your screen?

A lot of people who play shmups invest in a vertical oriented monitor since there are a lot of vertical arcade shmups out there. You can buy rotateable PC monitors that easily rotate from horizontal to vertical (so you can play both types using the same screen) or you can mount a TV or monitor on a wall in a vertical orientation.

I did this when I got a new PC a few months ago, but it doesn't work out as well as I thought it would.

I'm using my old smaller 20" 1600x900 monitor as the vert. New one is a 1080p 24". The thing I didn't think of is that vert shmups are still 4:3 (in this case 3:4) so the entire screen space won't be used unless you break aspect ratio (no thank you). The physical size of the tate display is almost exactly the same as non-tate on the new monitor, so there's really no reason for me to use it for that purpose.

I've left it in portrait orientation because it's extremely useful to have a 2nd monitor when playing fullscreen games to look up things about that game, and this way it takes up less space on my desk. Some websites are pretty good about scaling to 9:16 because smartphones.
