A/V modded Top-loading NES vs Composite Toaster question!

Post by KindGrind »

Quick question.

I picked up an a/v-modded Top Loader at a meet this morning. It has composite output on the back. I'm used to the audio and video on my trusty old Toaster plugged in via composite on my Trinitron. Long story short, the top loader looks noticeably worse, a bit blurry. Problem with the mod, or the A/V quality is just inferior on the top loader? (Like the Hi-Def Genesis versus square one, for example?)

Any input much appreciated. Cool little system, for sure, I just thought it would match my toaster!

Same TV, I have the 2 consoles hooked up to the same TV. It's pretty obvious the top loader looks a lot less crisp. Sony Trinitron CRT for both! You can click on the pics to enlarge...

The AV mod will need to be redone. Who knows what the person did inside. But chances are it's not the standard proven AV mod which makes it look identical to toaster.

Can you take pictures of the AV mod if possible? That does look noticeably worse, all the top loader AV mods that I used to do were practically on par with the front loader's AV output.

Yep I'll take a pic tomorrow, not home at the moment. I tried hooking it up using RF and it doesn't do anything. Is it normal post regular, tried and true a/v mod? I have a sneaking suspicion that the RF was rerouted to the back without any further modification? Although to be fair, RF is theoretically worse that what I see here, with much more noise? Thanks guys.

Generally most top loader AV mods involve cutting the video output pin on the PPU, which improves the image quality. The side effect of this of course is that the RF output is disabled.
