Wonder woman.
I'd give it a 8/10 for a super hero movie and its certainly better than most super hero movies. It actually has characters and the bad guys actually do harm to people you saw earlier in the movie, so it has this actual feeling of hate towards them. I didn't know that chick from House of cards (Robin Wright) could do sword play, riding horses and shoot bows and arrows. Its surprising what you can get out of her.
I must admit I was heart sunk by the Dunkirk trailer before it. So the first 10 or so minutes I was still thinking about that.

The only thing I can't fathom about all this Wonder Woman praise is that Gal Gadot - eye candy though she is - can't act for toffee. She was fucking awful in Batman vs Superman to the point where I was eternally put off the idea of her carrying a film.
...Jesus what am I saying, I'm not interested in seeing it anyway. I can't bring myself to waste money on more superhero shit atm.

I've seen it last year since the 90s. Not arguing for a better sentence here, but I'd like to think the film sure is crammed and nowadays projects with a whole lot less substance get an instant trilogy. So go figure.
On the bright side the practical effects like the guild navigator, the Shai-Hulud, the spice harvester and some designs are neat. And we are introduced to some of the Twin Peaks cast here.

Peggy Sue Got Married: **1/2
A weird 80s movie whee Kathleen Turner comes to the horrifying realization that she married Nicholas Cage. When sent back in time 25 years to fix things, she makes the same mistake a second time.
Pretty average overall, aside from one of Nicholas Cage's contractually obligated on -camera meltdowns.. Mostly it suffers from having people playing high school kids who are WAY too old to be playing high school kids (Kathleen Turner was 32 when she made this.) Somehow got nominated for three Oscars.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Not sure if you read my take on it -- it's buried a few pages back. My tldr version was "two amazing performances in a not-amazing film". I was all queued up to enjoy this, and put it off for ages until I was in the right mindset, and then it just went under my head.Zen wrote:The Master (2012) - Paul Thomas Anderson
Wonderful. Just a joy to experience film making of this calibre.
Very impressed to see that Anderson was also the writer here, as the script shows a nuanced understanding of the subject matter.
Was instantly impressed by the framing of the shots. Not to take anything away from Anderson's usual cinematographer, Robert Elswit but Mihai Malaimare behind the camera on this one paid off big time.
Joaquin Phoenix was fantastic (his physical interpretation of his character worked nicely), as was Philip Hoffman and Amy Adams played her role very well also.
That was one of the points that was brought up in RLM review, but they said the character has a fish out of water aspect, which her shitty acting leads a bit of credence to. And... better director? Think of all the tolerable performances by bad actors under good directors.Skykid wrote:The only thing I can't fathom about all this Wonder Woman praise is that Gal Gadot - eye candy though she is - can't act for toffee. Nor am I -- I maxed out my super hero films of 2017 at 1 (Logan). But if you're going to shit talk it you definitely owe it a viewing....Jesus what am I saying, I'm not interested in seeing it anyway. I can't bring myself to waste money on more superhero shit atm.
Did you bother w/ Alien Covenant yet?

Absolutely, some directors have worked magic with bad actors. I like RLM and agree with them maybe 70% of the time, but how shitty acting bolsters a "fish out of water" role makes no sense to me. She stinks then she stinks - makes it a more difficult watch and less tolerable.GaijinPunch wrote:That was one of the points that was brought up in RLM review, but they said the character has a fish out of water aspect, which her shitty acting leads a bit of credence to. It seems to be getting enough buzz that it could be an enjoyable summer flick. I know that's a shitty metric, but after hearing a large number of people (most of which probably have not the greatest taste in cinema) take a shit on GiTS and Alien Covenent, that counts for at least something. Other than the kids movies, I know nothing of what else is even showing.Absolutely, some directors have worked magic with bad actors. Gonna wait for video I guess. Honestly I have little time these days, and there's tons of killer TV on right now. I know we've had this conversation before, but I think you'd be far more pleased with where tv has taken cinematic art than the big screen.I will bother with it, but it's not out here until the 16th.Did you bother w/ Alien Covenant yet?

Having seen "Alien: Covenant", I'd tell you both not to bother. I still like the way Scott makes a movie, but there was a good bit about the movie that was disappointing to me. Then again, I liked "Prometheus", so take that for what you will.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Dune is an alright movie. The extended version is a load of crap. Just get the Alternative Edition Redux and you're good to go. More in line with the book and makes sense. Some fantastic stuff in the movie though, but a shame he never got final editing control.Ronyn wrote:Dunno.Blinge wrote:

I absolutely believe it: considering how bad cinema has become TV should be winning even if it's by default. I just wish I had more time to dedicate to it.GaijinPunch wrote:It seems to be getting enough buzz that it could be an enjoyable summer flick. Regarding GITS, I have a theory that it's not quite humdrum Hollywood enough for the average slobbering mental reject. It has bonafide themes, an element of depth and ambiguity in its narrative, and is structurally slow: all of which is at opposites with the cut to shreds plotting for simpletons the simian masses are used to.
Don't get me wrong, it's no great shakes and the final act sucks ass and blows it all pretty bad - but I don't think it's the trainwreck people keep suggesting; it's just not the same infant-level brain-food people are used to being spoonfed when they go to watch a movie.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Wonder woman has some good secondary characters in it to drive it along. One half of it is the world of amazons, the other half on earth as we know it with strong characters on both sides. Its a heart felt story and there are losses everywhere. That for me makes it rather good to watch because like the original Superman movies, there are losses, lessons to be learned etc. The ending is a bit campy. But like all movies it drives itself into a dead end with nowhere to go. So it suffers a bit at the end but so be it. I knocked 2 points off for the ending. For the record I only watch super hero movies at the cinema because a friend has nobody else to go with. I rather don't like them much, but I am a good friend.
Just finished Mad Max Fury Road. Would have liked more variety in the scenery. Lots of non sensical stuff like "where did they get all the fuel from?" Its been a long time since I watched an action movie where it almost entirely consists of action.
I'd give it a 6/10.

As for the fuel, i'd like to see what fuel they were using for those bikes if they could travel for 160 days. Sign me up for that.

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Re: Movies you've just watched
I need to watch this again, it was a Sunday/Bank Holiday staple when I was younger and I always really enjoyed it in spite of its pacing. Particularly the way it showed the US and American sides separately and in fair depth (hence the pacing issues). It didn't feel like your usual "fuck yeah WAR" propaganda. Back then there were 4 TV channels and fuck all else to do if it was raining (Britain, of course it was raining), so you had a forced attention span!soprano1 wrote:Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970)

Looked up the Wikipedia page and saw there was a "historical accuracy" section, expecting to find the usual Hollywood glaring errors. Nah it's just nerds moaning that some of the ships were different!

So I just saw The Mummy. Is it me, or is Tom Cruise really prone to taking a massive beating in that movie? From both Russell Crowe and Sofia Boutella. It's even worse than Mission: Impossible III where he took one of these from the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
