Help using DOSBox to play old dos games in PC Crt monitor

Post by Overkill »

Anyone using DOSBox with an PC Crt monitor can help me in which custom resolutions should i create for playing old dos games like they were in the old days?

Im making some tests, and i started using the "Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)" to create some low resolutions, but when i choose 320x200 70hz for example, it makes an 15 kHz, instead of the old resolutions that worked on PC crt monitors. So i tryed creating 320x200 140hz and it seems to work fine, but is this the correct way?

Also, there is some site that i can check the original resolution of the games?

640x400p at 70Hz would be your typical VGA/MCGA output for DOS games.

Thanks Fudoh. Creating 640x400 Refresh rate 70.000 Hz gives 29.400 kHz and monitor says "out of range". But if i select 71.000 Hz gives 29.825 kHz and displays normal. Using 640x480 70Hz the image is a little squashed, like an 50 Hz PAL console game, unless i select "aspect=True" in the conf.ini of DOSBox.

in "Scaler" i have to put "normalx2" because if using "none" the image will only be half of the screen in full screen mode

Try 720x400p at 70Hz. Mode 13h runs at 28.32mhz pixel clock and roughly at 31.5khz horizontal scan rate (original VGA monitors were fixed frequency).

This thread has modelines for all the legacy VGA modes listed: http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=26380

720x400p at 70Hz gives me 29.408 kHz and out of range. I think only higher than 29.800 works. I have an old 1990's crt vga monitor, but no image either

You're using the wrong timing details. If you end up with just 29.4 KHz then your front/back porch or sync width settings are likely to low. When I google for valid 640x400 VGA timings I see total a total resolution (including sync front/back porch and sync) of 800x449 at 70.086Hz resulting in 31.469 khz.

That do the trick! Thanks again Fudoh. Before i just leaved the "timing" in "Automatic - CRT standard" for safe. Changing the timings works great now. The modern CRT in the info recognise it as 720x400p, but it displays flawless.
