Thoughts on the Geometry Wars Games?

Post by Pedro Lambrini »

When the first game came out everyone and their dog went mad for it. Then the second one hit and their cats joined in too.

My favourite game in the series is Geometry Wars: Galaxies on the Wii. I still play it fairly often and, in fact, have played a lot of it recently due to a painful hand stopping me from pushing buttons in other shooters (hence this post).

The DS is version is cool for what it is and GW 3 is okay, if lacking a bit of the series flair. I've never played GW Touch so I can't really comment on that one.

All in all, I think it's a great series of games but it seems to have fallen by the wayside while other twin stick shooters (usually with Roguelike elements) have taken the spotlight.

So, now that the hype of the early games has long died, what do you guys think of the series? Does anyone still really bother playing these games with any real intensity? Would you like to see another? Will GW 2 ever get a PC release!? :P

Love Geometry Wars, especially Pacifism in Geo Wars 2. Barely played 3... it felt too "built up" and lacking in charm.

2's menu interface is a masterclass for score chasing. Every STG should copy it.

I don't know if this is what you mean, but I *love* that the game lets you start playing again before you even truly process that you're dead.

I actually like the diversity of levels in GW3. You can stick and replay the levels you enjoy after you've unlocked everything. I particularly enjoy the Titan levels and I may even like Pacifism City more than the classic Pacifism mode. The Scorpion levels they added with the Dimension Evolved update are also really fun, it's like Snake + Pacifism

I think that it's the diversity in GW: G that makes that one my favourite. Perhaps I should go back and put a little more time into GW3. The most jarring thing for me was definitely the art style. I just missed those lovely simple neon sprites and dark backgrounds...

I've only played 2. I think it's a good game, but I rate it inferior to Robotron.

Main reason being there are too many enemies that "just" chase you and you end up spending the whole game circle strafing the arena, whereas Robotron has more varied hazards and enemy types, including some very nervy rng bullet sprays which pretty much encapsulate all the joys of shmupping in their own right.

Not to mention hostages to save for score bonuses, etc. etc.

Like I said still a good game. I love the green enemies and snakes. Lot to love. I just prefer to boot up mame for Robotron though.

I absolutely love the series and still play them fairly regularly. Played Geometry Wars : Retro Evolved a lot when it was released but I must say that my favorite is Geometry Wars 2. Especially Pacifism Mode.

I also own Geometry Wars 3 but haven't even tried it yet.

Now I only played only 3 and not 1 and 2 (and have never seen Robotron really), but I quite liked it. It has been about one year since I last played it though, but here are some impressions.

First of all there is fair amount of diversity in levels. Now of course I think it is fair to say that with the diversity, you aren't going to play each of the levels equally at all (in fact probably most percentage of the play time will be concentrated on few levels for most of the players).

But there are enough interesting and varied levels which play different from what you are describing. Though one of the things that I should mention is that getting all the stars should just be a start (of course unless someone doesn't feel like playing more after that). After that it is really about going for highest score on the levels you like (presumably with added restrictions such as no bomb etc.).

Generally speaking, a lot of the "hardcore" levels are pretty good. One "complaint" perhaps though that one might make is the "start-up" time for a level before it actually starts to become interesting. It does vary quite a bit from level to level though.

Here is an example of high level play on one of the levels (also good example of risk taking for score):

Another good level I remember is "bullethell". I think there were number of good levels (I don't remember much of the levels now obviously).

As someone who doesn't like twin-stick shooters, I thought the Wii Geometry Wars was pretty enjoyable as you can use the Wii remote as a crosshair. The whole "unlocking stuff with in-game currency" thing kinda made me lose interest after a while but it was fun while it lasted.

I liked 3 more than the others. Haven't played Galaxies though. There's some nice level & enemy variety and they are surprisingly well designed. Even the boss fights are decent. Going for max stars is an ok challenge at first and there's something for everyone for score play.

For recent twin-stick shooters I prefer Assault Android Cactus over the series but enjoyed GW3 a lot more than I expected.

Very fond of the series. It's a toss up between 2 and Galaxies as to which is my favourite.

3 is brilliant too - and the move into 3D makes some levels feel a bit like playing Tempest - which is a good thing in case you are wondering :)

I really need to put a bit more time into GW3. I don't have a 360 so I have no access to 2 these days and 3 seems to offer the closest experience. And the idea of having a Tempest feel to some levels is an interesting take.

I should probably pick up a 360 again at some point too.

Haven't had my Xbox hooked up in ages, but back when I did I spent way too much time on GW:RE2, mostly in Pacifism and Deadline modes.

Just wondering. Does anyone know if there is any difference in the soundtracks between GW2 and GWG?

Like I say, I don't have a 360 to check myself.

I'm not sure I've sunk more time into any game series. Endless fun.
I held the Pacifism world record for both GW2 and GW3 for a while.
GW3 gets a bad rap for some weird reason... but the more I play it, the more I think it's superior to GW2.

No comment on the 3rd game since I haven't played it, but I consider 1 and 2 good but not great.

The first game is really overrated, and has been rendered completely redundant by GW2. GW2 offers so much more content and is an overall improvement over GW1, that there's no reason to go back to it.

Between 1 and 2, some of my major issues have been addressed, some are still present, and new ones were introduced.

My major gripe with GW1 was the multiplier system, which is way better in GW2. Makes the extra lives actually seem useful now. I also like that the main mode is now time attack instead of survival. Survival can make runs feel like a slog at times, which was another thing I disliked about GW1. Although the gun in GW2 feels a bit too small relative to the two upgraded ones in GW1, at least I no longer have to worry about shot types suddenly switching on me.

Both GW1 and GW2 have hitbox and collision issues imo. I never liked the sizes of the player ship's hitbox, feels way too big. The collision detection can get frustrating at times, like when you hear one of your bombs going off yet a nearby enemy kills you anyway, or when you cross one of the gates and you hear it explode yet a nearby enemy still kills you. I also dislike how common it is for enemies to spawn right on top of you. While GW's visual effects look cool, I feel they clutter up the screen way too much, and they sadly made it worse in GW2. Finally, I really wish GW1 and GW2 has a quick restart button.

As for new issues introduced with GW2, the big one for me is the severe rank drops in time attack mode. So not only do you lose a few precious seconds whenever you die in this mode, but also waste precious time trying to recover. Feels way too punishing. Also regarding time attack mode, it would have been cool if unused bombs would add to your score when time runs out. I think the orange enemies that move vertically/horizontally should have been treated as two different enemies. Since GW is designed to be played on a widescreen display, it's easier to react to the orange enemies when they're moving horizontally than when they're moving vertically. Not a serious issue, but some of the achievements in GW2 are really stupid.

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who doesn't "get" pacifism. Don't get me wrong, I do find the mode fun, but I just don't "get" it. I wish I did though.

Multi-Player support in GW 2 is very enjoyable - it tracks victories in the current session so you can dip in and out of all the modes and compare performances. Excellent fun. Most of the modes are simultaneous in nature and there are some co-op variations too. Have played with 2 but if memory serves me it supports up to 4 players.

Love GW.
Though I agree that it's not as good as Robotron, it's still a solid modern homage.

A little while ago I did an art commission for a BYOAC member making a GW arcade machine. It was using dual analog joysticks, and a foot peddle for bomb. Really fun project and I'm happy how the art turned out.
Check it out here: http://the-artcade.blogspot.com/2013/06 ... rcade.html

There's a YouTube vid of the cabinet in action as well.

how did the joystick end up working for Geo Wars? Or am I overthinking the difference between 8-way and analog movement?

I don't agree with this at all. Retro Evolved mode in GW2 introduced new enemies so it doesn't play the same. I like the Retro Evolved mode in GW1 the most for this reason as these new enemy types are annoying af.

But as a complete package, GW2 is better.

I felt like lives were more meaningful in Geo 1. IIRC, you lost your multiplier each time you died, while you retain it in 2. For me, that made each life feel like a big deal--if you got that multiplier up high enough, that single life could contribute a lot to your score. I may be remembering things wrong, though.

I'll take annoying enemies over GW1's horrible multiplier system.

The problem with GW1 is that your most important life score-wise ends up being the only one of your lives that actually matters 99% of the time. There's no point in continuing the run after you break your largest multiplier (unless you beat your old score I guess), especially when it's easier to safely build it up on your first life compared to when the rank is at max.

No sure but I'm assuming it worked just like the analog sticks on a controller. I never got to try his cab, I just did the artwork for him.

I own all the games in the series released so far and I really enjoy all of them.
In my opinion, Galaxies is best played with the Classic Controller.

Agreed....Galaxies wiimote and nunchuck is an interesting attempt at an alternative but twin stick classic is better.

I think my issue with the nunchuck is that I'm splitting my attention between two points (ship and the crosshair), instead of only concentrating on the ship. I settled on the Classic Controller Pro over the original Classic Controller, because the thumbsticks are further apart so my thumbs don't hit each other.

There are a couple stages in Wii Galaxies with a rank overflow bug; if you live long enough the rank resets to minimum and then never gets harder. Probably not worth exploiting though as it's really boring.

They're pretty cool. 3 is great. Very frustrated that I still don't have a copy of Galaxies (Wii).

And yes, GW1 is very silly.

I love the original Geometry Wars as a free addition to Project Gotham Racing, but it makes me sad to think about because that was my favorite racing series. The Geometry Wars series was fun but not as fun as Project Gotham Racing on Xbox.

Playing Geometry Wars 3 on the PS Vita handheld, especially the 1st gen OLED model, is quite something to behold + with the obligatory twin analog sticks in place. It plays at a solid & silky-smooth arcade-spec 60fps framerate while taking just a little space on a Vita memory card.
