Sony BVM-20F1U vs NEC XP29
For those that own or have owned both a BVM-20F1U and a NEC XP29 monitor, what are your opinions regarding the XP29? Do your prefer it over the 20F1U? Is the picture quality on the XP29 as sharp and is the color as vibrant as the BVM-20F1U? If I do not care about the larger screen size, should I even bother picking up an XP29 if I already have the 20F1U?

The NEC hands down, no questions..size, connect everything to it, scanlines look better, syncs to anything..etc.. If you have the space and does not cost you an arm and a leg, get it:)

I own both. Assuming both are in good condition, there's absolutely no comparison between video quality: The BVM is MUCH better. That being said, the extra size of the NEC make light gun games way more fun...and sometimes you just want to play on a bigger screen.
If you have the ability to own both, I strongly recommend it. If you decide not the buy the NEC, let me know. I'll buy it and get it in the hands of some retro gamers that could really use an RGB monitor.
@SNK-NEO-GEO Not disrespect meant, but if you disagree, I assume you've either never seen them side-by-side, or your BVM was worn out. Also, the NEC's don't "sync to anything" - I've always had issues with mine. Either way, both monitors should be fed 750hm csync.

I will just stick with my 20F1U then and save $900. I was willng to pay that price if the picture quality was as good as the BVM. The sales thread for the NEC XP29 is here http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=60097 Guy has 7 of them for sale.

for me the BVM has the better picture but the NEC has the size advantage. but in the end it's down to what you can get hold of/price

Maybe the more important question would be; what type of games do you prefer and what gaming platforms do you like? Are you going to TATE it?
That's the reason why I keep 3 vertical (TATE) and 4 horizontal monitors and TV's in my setup; some games look and feel better on display X than they do on display Y

lol guy is asking top dollar and beyond and doesn't even know if the tubes look good. I find it funny almost all his quoted sales were people who bought it from Spain.slai50 wrote:I will just stick with my 20F1U then and save $900. I don't know why anyone would go with those for solely for computer use unless they couldn't live without the size. Especially for that kind of money

That is top dollar but with the market being what it is I wouldn't be surprised if he sold a bunch of them at that price!
But yes, establishing the price without seeing the tubes' wear is ludicrous, I agree with that

Never seen an NEC XP29 but i can just assume the thing is way too heavy for a single person to manage, so my preference would probably be with the BVM. I've had two of them and they're extremely heavy, almost the most a single person can carry, it's weight is somewhere between the weight of a consumer 21 and 24 inch. Personally those are my favorite sizes (a slight preference for 21 inch actually but either is ideal). I like to be able to move the tv/monitor around and be able to work on it if the need ever arises.
