Polybius

Post by Marc »

Anyone else playing this? Seems weird nobody else on here has mentioned it.
Anyways, I'm enjoying, but damn it's hard. It's Minter doing his thing, with nearly all frills removed, and some face melting visuals. I can only imagine how it must look in VR.
There's a tiny bit of inertia on the player ship which I'm not a fan of, and I'm yet to work out why sometimes clipping a game brings me to a shuddering halt, while other times it seems content to let me get away with it.
Scoring is as simple as, shot everything, pass as many gates as you can, watch multiplier increase, repeat.
Intense would be the only word I have right now.

Yes, and it's awesome.
Stage 13 can go eat a dick, though.

Its good. Kinda hard to see what is going on sometimes, but not as bad as Space Giraffe, which I also liked.

I'm really not a fan of games where just trying to parse what's going on ahead of you is the primary challenge.
But maybe it's easier to grasp when you're actually playing it?

8 felt that way about Space Giraffe, but this feels far more natural to me.

So you guys are saying it's a ton of fun even without VR? Because I was thinking of getting it, but all the reviews were like VR VR VR VR VR VR!!! I didn't think TxK was anything to write home about, but I could give Minter another chance.

Honestly, I'd be too scared to play this in VR xD

It's great without it.

Not to mention Polybius supports 3D HDTVs + 120fps framerate with said Playstation VR headset. I still keep dying on Stage 13 -- are you suppose zig-zag through the flag poles & standard poles (as if you're salom sking against poles)? Miss one & you lose a life. There's no mention of what to do exactly on Stage 13 anyways. I guess Mr. Minter wants the player to find out for himself or herself just how to properly play Stage 13 through "trial 'n' error", right?

Playing TxK on a big screen HDTV setup is legendary -- much better than on the ol' 1st-gen OLED Vita handheld easily.

If you're talking about the stage I'm thinking of, you just need to be on the side of the flag that the actual flag is pointing to. If you're on the other side, you die.

Thanks for the handy tip to that particular stage, Glick. I'd have a few lives in reserve going into the flag pole stage but end up getting nailed with them & getting the dreaded game over screen really quick.

Coming to PC too according to Minter on Twitter. Might be able to hold off on a PS4 for a bit longer, but a 144Hz monitor could be that much closer. Hopefully it'll be superior to the original, which I didn't think was the case for Space Giraffe.

Yeah, I had to practice the flag level a bit. I was really thinking it was more complicated than it was. I thought I had to hit the flags, and needed to alternate between red and blue. Couldn't figure it out until my 5th try or so. Glad I didn't try to brute force it in pure mode, because that would've driven me nuts.

Never heard of that one. Is the gameplay really "shoot stuffs to score, dodge to survive", or just "dodge stuffs coming at great speed on a tubular environment" ?

I haven't made it that far on Pure yet. Invariably get destroyed by stages 10 and 11. Immense fun though, loving it.

This game is on sale, on EU PSN at least, this summer.
I got it, and have absolutely no idea what I'm supposed to do, apart from "what comes naturally".

Any beginner tips ?
