Universal AV Android app: Remotely control Extron Crosspoint

Post by Dochartaigh »

Around 2013 to 2014 there was an Android App called "Universal AV" which could remotely control your Extron Crosspoint Ultra from your touchscreen Android Tablet. It was made by a company called "Universal Applications". In February 2014 he pulled it from the Google Play Store.

Did anybody ever use this App? Does anybody know where/how I could get an APK of it to try out on my Android tablet? There's a couple APK's available for download online but they seem to all be spyware/virus-like apps from unreputable websites (and either my ancient Nexus 7 tablet decided to die at that exact moment, or I'm pretty sure one possibly bricked my crappy Nexus 7 tablet I booted up for the first time in 3 years to try out...formatted it and it's working again, but weird ;)

OR, are there any other Apps like this I could try? I would absolutely love to incorporate a touchscreen tablet running on my WiFi network and be able to 1-touch control my Crosspoint Ultra from a graphical UI on the screen (instead of having to physically move over to where my Crosspoint is, hit "preset", then the preset number, then "enter"... which is so much work ;). Basically I would like a new toy to fiddle with and I love the idea of combining old CRT TV tech with something modern like a touchscreen UI for my retro video game setup. Since the Crosspoint Ultras use a programming language of sorts I could even program a script to run through a bunch of different systems in sequence which would be a cool display to turn on when I have people over.

I don't have a Crosspoint Ultra, but as far as I can tell, all Ethernet-enabled Crosspoint machines have a web-based interface anyway, so as long as you have a browser running on your tablet, you can access your crosspoint for configuration and switching through its IP adress.

They have a web based and a software program you can run through Windows. Both unfortunately look and feel like I'm navigating AOL back in 1995 or something lol.

I was excited about this Universal AV app (before I found out it was pulled from the Google Play store) because it's a pretty modern looking interface for something like a tablet to run, and it has bells and whistles I'm looking for like the ability to put large bold graphics for each systems button...I could even put in pictures of my exact monitors as the icons to quickly switch to them as an output - all while doing the Extron code on the back end (hidden to me like I want it) to do whatever quasi-advanced switching I want it to do.

All this may be a moot point however. I tried the HTML interface and the Crosspoint Ultra isn't even recognized on my network. I did a level 1, 2, 3 soft reset but am afraid to do a hard reset since that could brick the firmware and I really don't want a $150 paperweight (and no way to switch my systems!). If anyone is familiar with getting the Crosspoint Ultra hooked up (and recognized) via LAN/Ethernet please let me know!

Say I program extron hardware at my job. Let me know the model number of the unit you have and I will take a look at the manuals to see what can be done. I think you will need to have a extron controller of some sort in front of the Crosspoint unit but maybe it might work with the extron command language. Let me know.

One piece of software I have been poking at you might be interested in is http://www.commandfusion.com/software/iviewer.
Let me know what you think. They did have some info on extron hardware but I didn't get to the part on the best way for me to set it up.
If you want to take a shot at it let me know.

alright, how do you even manually program an extron?

i have an MVX 128 and no clue how to set it up. was trying to figure it out today by reading the manual but i just dont get it yet.

I want to preset it so that each input goes to output 1 and 2.

How do i select the second preset? I can only save 1 of them.

You'll have to read the manual if it's different than my Extron Crosspoint 128 . On mine to set a preset I simply set everything up how I want it, then hold preset for a couple seconds, then it blinks or whatnot, hit the input I want to save that preset to and hit enter. When I want to recall that preset I hit preset, then the preset number (the available presets are lit up on mine on the input buttons), then enter.

I dont get it at all. Ive read the manual.

This extron is way more complicated than my scart switch was.

All i want to do is mash an input and have it go to output 1.

My Joytech scart switch has 1 button on it to select inputs.

What do they mean by ties? and why cant i tie more than 1 input to an output? I want them all to go to output 1, i dont need the others.

Sorry for not getting back sooner. Had some personal and family things come up. I have some free time this weekend to post what I figured out for Dochartaigh. I can help you mvsfan next if you give me some time to read up on your model. Send me the make and model number from on the Extron sticker on the unit. I'll download the docs and read through them when I have time next and post here and if you want you can contact me for direct call or something.
Back this weekend.

I think i got this extron now. I have to make a tie and hit enter every single time i want to change inputs.

and then i can only make one tie at a time, have to cancel the old tie to select a different input to the same output.

Thats wild. and - poor design.

you should be able to just press an input and press an output or two, then press another input button to change it.

that would have been way better.
