Sony BVM servicing

Hi

I'm booking my Sony BVM 24 in for a service by a professional broadcast servicing company in UK (Broadcast Service Centre Ltd.). The goal is to fix a minor video issue on 480i output - 3-4 faint red lines across the screen. I'm hoping the fix will come down to replacing a component within the monitor or on the RGB card. Are there other things I should ask the engineer to do while the monitor is in the workshop? I'm planning for this to be a one off visit that will keep the monitor good for a few years.

I wanted to post an update on my experience getting my BVM D-Series CRT serviced.

The company I used are Broadcast Service Centre in Wokingham, UK. I'd strongly recommend them even if the price is not super cheap. The engineer who dealt with my monitor has many years of experience servicing broadcast CRTs. He fixed a leak in the heater-cathode and did a full configuration of geometry, convergence, white balance and white uniformity, and updated the firmware the latest version.

In terms of pricing they have a set charge of £180 for two hours work and small parts - if the maintenance requires more than two hours or parts then they will provide a quote.

The monitor picture really is night and day better - not to mention the odd red lines are long gone.

Interesting. Did you drop the monitor to them and wait or ship it?
When you say they adjusted geometry etc. Did they do it in all resolutions? as they each have a different set of settings

How did he do this – was it with a CRT restorer by any chance?
and did a full configuration of geometry, convergence, white balance and white uniformity, and updated the firmware the latest version.

I dropped off as they are so close and I'm super paranoid. They have couriers they work with.

The settings were done just for SD modes as that's all I use.

Here's what he said / did:

"The fault, as received, was in fact a faulty CRT. This was not uncommon on these monitors. It had a heater-cathode leak causing a red hue in the blacks on certain signals. After the CRTs became obsolete some 10 or more years ago I came up with a method of forcing the CRT to 'flashover' thereby clearing the leak. It didn't always work but it has in your case. There is no guarantee this will not re-occur but could be months, could be years."

Sounds like he used a rejuvenator. Its great that you found someone to fix it who was competent and it wasn't too expensive!

Just out of curiosity, how many hours are on your D24?

About 27k hours with a new tube installed at 9k hours according to the engineer. Turns out that he also did the work to install the new tube. Small world.

Wow, so they installed a new tube at 9,000 hours? That is pretty early from what I've heard.

People say they replaced them between 30-50,000 hours.

Did you happen to ask why they replaced it so early?

He stated earlier that he paid £180 for the service.
