What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
i figured it out!
when i was done with the ice cave i just warped out of there so i didn't have to use a rhombus key, completely forgot about the little ice area next to the cave entrance. took quite a bit of wandering around to find this again.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Ah right, does that head towards a base with loads of traps? I can't remember very well.
Also do you have the truth glass or w/e it is?

Eador: Genesis is free on GOG right now. Never played this kind of game before, I'm enjoying it a lot. Don't forget to pick it up if you enjoy games like Heroes of Might and Magic.

Shadow Dancer [Genesis].
Did nearly perfect [made like two stupid mistakes up to this point, one was on the first boss -- I'm increasingly certain that the stage bosses get easier the further you go, and the other was in 4-1, was pretty surprised I didn't fuck up at all in 4-2] up until room 4 of Union Lizard's base.
In that room, with all the colored ninjas, I proceeded to die nine fucking times in a row.
Also, I still really wish the intermission stages weren't so long, they're annoying.

That's a great arcade-y ninja game right there.
Yes the last room with the coloured ninja is a being, you have to play it a bunch to find a way to dance around them (at least that's what I do. I don't fight them all, only a couple). Same with the last room, and I gotta admit : I still need to use my magic at the end

That gif is pissing me off.
Should really give that a shot though. That end bit would totally kill me, though.
I've made it past the black ninja room once or twice before, and then wanted to throw something when I faced the final boss.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Don't forget that you can simply retreat. Going back gives you more room to put yourself and the ninjas in a better position to deal with them. Doing this will sometimes spawn more ninjas, but if you deal with them beforehand (by walking forward a bit then going back to trigger them), they won't spawn anymore and managing the others will be easier.null1024 wrote:In that room, with all the colored ninjas, I proceeded to die nine fucking times in a row.

Street Fighter V
Made it to Diamond league a few days ago (with Necalli). I've spent more time playing this than anything else this year, so I'll probably ease off a bit now. I don't think I can make it to Super Diamond without a ton of grinding. Overall, I'm pretty happy with season 2's balance - a lot of characters are strong and viable, so there's always a good mix of them online. It doesn't get boring facing the same few top tiers over and over. What I don't like is Balrog and Ibuki. They are season 2's cancer. Ibuki would be easy enough to fix, though. She has bullshit 50/50s from anywhere on screen that are impossible to see, you just have to guess which side she'll be on and either block or mash out a reversal. If they at least make that possible to react to or predict, even if it's hard to do, she'd be fine (and maybe reduce her stun a bit, too). Balrog on the other hand needs a complete rework. He might be even more broken than he was in ST.
Steins;Gate
Platinum'd this earlier today too. This is probably the best time travel story I've ever seen. I'm looking forward to seeing what Steins;Gate 0 is about, but I'll probably wait a while before starting it.

Assuming the game has multiple endings, do you need a walkthrough to make it to the best ending?

Never the biggest Sonic fan, but I always thought the lock on of Sonic and Knuckles was pretty ingenious. They never used it again, but I am curious as to what other MD games could have benefited from it?kaicooper wrote: SONIC 3 & Kunckles
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
There are two endings you'll need to follow a guide for if you want to complete everything. I'd recommend just playing blind until those are the only endings you need, since the other ones are easy to get. It doesn't take long to get all of the flags for the other endings either. You can skip through everything very quickly.Ruldra wrote:I have this on my wishlist, I'm just waiting for a good enough sale to grab it. Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
That said you absolutely NEED the "true" ending which stupidly does require a walkthrough (a flowchart, even), but try to go for the spoiler free ones, they definitely do exist. I already liked the game, but that extra ending almost made me cry. The people who just watched the anime don't realise how hard we had to work with the VN :3
Also be sure to get "Suzuha's" ending, just to see the creepy territory this story is actually willing to go into.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Steins;Gate is a really great VN with a fun cast of characters, enjoyable music and an overall memorable plot.
The beginning can be a bit slow-paced as you get to know the characters and see them interacting with one another in their daily lives, but I had no issues with it myself and didn't even realize people could dislike that part before I read impressions online.
On that note, I recently finished the last ending I needed to get in Chaos;Head and I gotta admit that even though Steins;Gate is all-around better and that Chaos;Head's last half/third goes in an inferior direction than what the early chapters suggest, I still have a soft spot for that game and most notably its main character Takumi Nishijou. He is all sorts of fucked-up and for the most part is the narrator. You get to see in details how his paranoia and reclusiveness play out and can end up as confused as he is in regards with what is going on around him. The Delusion Trigger segments in particular are also really great at showing the nonsensical ideas going on inside someone who's kinda lost his touch with reality, and while Okabe Rintaro was super fun and well-developped throughout the game's events, the insight into Takumi's mind and personality was even greater IMO. (Or maybe I just relate to him too much...

I think Suzuha's ending is the one we are the most likely to reach on a first playthrough because you don't even realize you are on a specific route until the credits roll. And it is a very interesting one, probably one of the best non-true routes, tied IMO withSumez wrote:Also be sure to get "Suzuha's" ending

Asura turned out to be an unexpected gem!
It's an overhead Smash TV/Action RPG hybrid in the vein of Victor Vran or Forced Showdown in an Indian mythology setting (with an Indian developer!) where you play an extremely pissed off Rakshasa seeking revenge against a good guy kingdom defended by an army of humans, monkeys, elephant men, and immortal mystics.

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I'm not huge on Daiblo-style games but the two you mention here, particularly the former, are personal exceptions...does Asura have a comparable emphasis on exploiting/mastering a system of "direct" moment-to-moment combat over more passive number-crunching? If so I may need to put it on the list...Mischief Maker wrote:It's an overhead Smash TV/Action RPG hybrid in the vein of Victor Vran or Forced Showdown

There's practically zero math in Asura. It's a stick and move game that's faster paced than Forced Showdown.BulletMagnet wrote:I'm not huge on Daiblo-style games but the two you mention here, particularly the former, are personal exceptions...does Asura have a comparable emphasis on exploiting/mastering a system of "direct" moment-to-moment combat over more passive number-crunching? You don't have the attack-timing mechanics of Victor Vran, but you do have dodge rolls (with i-frames, but only against ranged attacks). Most actions draw from a fast-refilling stamina bar broken down into discrete squares, HP is measured in hearts, and active skills recharge by killing grunts (and all bosses summon occasional squads of grunts). When you level up you get access to a skill tree, but the skills are randomly chosen every play through, and once you clear a room you can decide whether to tear open the bodies of your enemies for money and possibly item drops, or swallow their souls for additional XP. Also, elemental attacks are a big deal because burn will destroy a piece of armor, but their effect is delayed by a couple seconds allowing you to use a consumable or skill to remove the burning before it activates.
Its production values are definitely below VV or FS, but the game sells for half their price and what graphics it does have are brightly colored.
One piece of drama connected to the game is the developer made the serious faux pas of writing their own review on the steam page so the community is having the calm and measured response you would expect.

Riptide GP Renegade: Completed all the main stages up to the last boss race, which is utter BS, haven’t managed to get within three seconds of the opponent yet. Started on the side and bonus missions as I want to complete the game with at least two stars in every event, but the slalom stages are annoying the life out of me because some of the more ramp-heavy courses simply don’t make for a fun race.
Polybius: Just….. WOW. Twitch shooting at its most basic, and the visuals are something else altogether. Amazing stuff, but I’m sure I read something where Jeff said this wasn’t going to be as balls hard as the rest of his stuff…. Yeah right.
Only spent a half hour with Cursed Castilla, but it appears to be a very competent GnG rip, with a slight 8-bit home computer feel. Very promising.

planet coaster is the shit. been playing around in sandbox mode all week and it's a much better theme park sim package than the old rollercoaster tycoon games.
for the past few weeks during my work commute I've been playing muramasa: rebirth and I've been having a blast. I 100%ed muramasa: the demon blade on wii a long time ago, so I can't really tell which content is new and what has been cut, but the gameplay still holds up for the action genre.
resident evil 7 is shipping today and I'm gonna give that a go as well unless my buddy comes over to co-op wild guns reloaded again.

Super Mario Bros. [NES].
Turns out, there's a bunch of this game that I've never seen because even as a kid, I always used the warps.
Space Harrier 2 [Genesis].
I'm starting to enjoy this game more than OG Space Harrier. The much more intense enemy shot speed and seemingly better stage design is marred only by the general choppiness of the game from being an extremely early title.
gonna keep saying it, it really needs a Fantasy Zone II DX style upgrade to arcade spec, hot damn

It's alright. The exploration and the level design of the game were the strongest aspects of the game, with a lot to explore and backtrack. Overall story is eh, it's mostly carried by the fleshed out sidestories which make the game world feel like a believable place. The enemy variety itself isn't a problem, often there's just not enough of them facing you at once.kaicooper wrote:just finished Prey 2017

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
If No Man's Sky is the Phantom Menace of gaming, Strafe is its Kung Fury: full of mean-spirited references to the weaknesses of 90s tech, but completely missing out on the gameplay that made 90s-style FPSs so compelling in the first place.
Strike 1 against this game is artificial bullet scatter slowly mitigated by picking up accuracy upgrades over the course of the game. By world 4-1 you might become as accurate as Quakeguy was on stage 1!
Strike 2 is a universal ammo system coupled with throwing out all remaining bullets in a half-full clip when you reload. So if you try to shoot a grenade without the requisite 16 bullets out of your base 25 bullet clip, you instead reload and throw out the remaining 15.
Strike 3 is Risk of Rain-style game-changer permanent upgrades like rechargeable shields or triple-shot. My success or failure hinged more on which upgrades I got than my actual skill.
Strike 4 is boring enemies. Run straight at you or shoot from a distance. In world 3-1 they shake things up with an enemy who shoots THREE shots in a spread! Woooah!
Strike 5 is generic-looking levels with the same wall texture everywhere and a minimap that's completely useless. I was constantly tripping over the corpses of dead enemies hopelessly lost while trying to find the exit.
Strike 6, you'd think with the intentionally shitty low-poly graphics the game would run like a dream, right? Well fuck you this is running in the Unity engine so get ready for constant slowdown and high GPU temperatures!
Strike 7 is the buggy map generator. I constantly see enemies drop through the scenery. Then last night I stumbled upon a winning combo of upgrades, got further than I ever got before, and just when I was going to win the game I fell through the floor and was stuck. And no, this was not the intentional "fall through the floor and land in a glitched out shop" intentional easter egg, this was a real game-ending bug.
Ziggurat, for all its shortcomings, is a superior game in every respect. Every respect.
