SEGA - Road to 2020

Post by KAI »

Road to 2020
Apparently Sega is planning to revive some major IP's before 2020.
Hoping for a new Sega Rally, Outrun, Galaxy Force or Virtua Fighter.

What Sega franchises would you like to see revived?

A real Phantasy Star.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

I want Jet Set Radio 3 more than anything, but honestly, Sega would probably be dumb to make it. The HD release of the original didn't sell well enough for them to bother with JSRF, so I can only imagine how badly a sequel would do.

I don't know what franchise they could revive that would sell well enough to be considered a "global hit."

Seconding this.

Steamspy says that JSR HD has about 1.6 million owners, which are fairly solid numbers, beating out a hell of a lot of their other PC ports on Steam.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

The JSR numbers are massively inflated. It's been available for free (maybe more than once), been a part of multiple bundles, and it's regularly on sale for $1-$3. If Sega could have sold a million copies of JSRF, I'm sure they would have ported that ASAP.

Got to be Outrun 3. I've been playing Coast 2 Coast on the 360 recently and it's still the best arcade racer. Sega, pay for the damn Ferrari license, rerelease 2, make 3 and roll around in the money.

House if the Dead 5? How about an HOTD collection for VR. Seems as if most VR games are lightgun shooters.

The really tough thing about their old IP's is that they were made to be one and done arcade games.* There's really not much you can build upon a Golden Axe or Altered Beast. Even Sonic resists expandability as compared to Mario.

Personally going the compilation route ala GameCenter CX would be the type of thing I'd care about, but it'd do poorly. Indie games already serve that niche.

* Strictly revisiting old IP's is anathema to what SEGA used to be back then, isn't it?

I think they still have some of the original staff even. Rieko Kodama, for starters.

Virtua Cop: Rerelease the existing trilogy for PS4 with PSVR support (meaning VC3 gets its first console release), and bring out Virtua Cop VR for arcades.

Galaxy Force: Do for it what After Burner Climax did, only with PS4 gen graphics.

Sega Race TV & R-Tuned: Just port them to current gen systems and add 4K capability for PS4 Pro/Xbox One Scorpio.

Power Drift would be nice to revisit especially with the current gen hardware. It probably would've been tough to pull off on Xbox/Chihiro, but something like a PS4/XB1 equivalent PC hardware could take it I'm sure.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Doubt it's in the cards, but I'd love another Skies of Arcadia.

This would be my 2nd choice:D

Or maybe we can get a Chakan reboot?

I just want them to announce a US release of the latest SEGA 3D Classics Collection for 3DS (the one with Thunder Force III and Alien Syndrome). I'm getting tired of waiting for news on sites that post stupid filler articles.

Panzer Dragoon for me.

Read through that "business report/overview" and it's the vaguest thing ever. It's like something a 16 year old would knock out at the peak of laziness in-between getting baked with friends.

Give me a game with the aesthetic and story-style of Phantasy Star 1-4, with the combat mechanics of Phantasy Star Online 2.

I swear, PSO2 is so fun that I would totally play it if it were a completely single player offline hack and slash.

I honestly can't think of a single Sega franchise I want to see more iterations of other than Jet Set Radio. I would love that.

A new good Sonic game would be nice of course, but that's always a lottery with really bad odds.

Bare Knuckle 4:

2D, highly varied branching paths, massively destructible scenery and backgrounds, 6 selectable characters each with an enormous moveset and sporting SF3 quality animation, with Yuzo Koshiro on sound duties tearing it up with dirty bass driven audio.

^ And no broad view/zoomed-out distance that makes everything look tiny with barely any action on the sides like in Dragon Crown.
And for the little there is far away from my character: idgaf. I want focus on big-ass sprites slugging each-other to death, not squint my eyes or wish I had goggles to see closer.
Yeah even if there's a 4p mode, 16:9 is enough room to fit droves of huge things, game designers need to re-learn how to not leave massive empty spaces on screen, especially for action games.

If Sega made a new SOR like you're describing it would make up for their handling of SOR Remake.

Never seen anyone drop the ball on an IP ever. First game right out of the gates was fantastic... their best in ages, arguably. Then immediately shat the mattress from then on out.
