Neat. Here is a video play though linked at one of the times it shows the date if someone wants to see the time stamp in motion. Besides seeing this game some on the N64 when it was relevant I've never played it.

Good catch!
I am more familiar with the date depicted in the opening (2007-07-15) since I tend to skip in-game cutscenes and haven't seen that one in a while.
STGAlmond : You should really give it a try! The controls are a bit tricky at first, but once you get them down, the game opens up a lot and is tons of fun.

Does it emulate well? I do have an n64, but I have no controllers and have never wanted to play anything on it since I was a kid. I do have wiiu, so I could possibly pickup wii version if it is worth it and isn't too rare.

This suggests it runs all right in Mupen, but it is N64 emulation, so I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Not sure if I'm just reading your comment wrong, but Sin & Punishment is on the Wii U's Virtual Console as well.STGAlmond wrote:I do have wiiu, so I could possibly pickup wii version if it is worth it and isn't too rare.
Unless, you were talking about the Wii sequel. It's also downloadable from the Wii U eShop, though honestly physical copies of it seem cheaper atm.
e: we're seriously running out of futuristic dates from classic movies and games that haven't already passed by. Peeps who made that stuff back then must be pretty disappointed that we don't have hoverboards, mecha, or laser weapons yet. But, maybe also relieved we haven't been overrun by killer robots or invaded by aliens etc.

Its just my ignorance showing. I didn't know it was available on VC, but would still prefer physical in the end.

According to a number of 20th century sci-fi works, some kind of apocalypse will happen this year anyway.

the only physical version is the japanese n64 one. the wii game which you can get a physical copy of is a completely different game.STGAlmond wrote: Its just my ignorance showing. I didn't know it was available on VC, but would still prefer physical in the end.

Yeah - S&P on cart was JP only.
The Wii got a VC version of it and it has the menu translated. However the N64 controller is a better fit than the Wii's classic controller so I prefer the original. But the VC version is worth a look.
The Wii also got S&P2 which is a disc release. It is a highly regarded game. I own it but haven't played it much - it is in my very large pile of games I have yet to play !!

Successor of the Skies is amazing - better than the first game, a prime example of Wiimote + Nunchuck controls done right, and in my personal opinion, Treasure's best game. I very much recommend it. Not that the original S&P isn't good, but seriously, the sequel blows it out of the water. I only played S&P on Wii VC though, but I did find a good control scheme for the Classic Controller Pro. Eventually.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself

Re: Today's date is depicted in Sin & Punishment
i strongly disagree, i think the original is the better game. it's just a much tighter game and the dodge mechanic in the sequel is bordering on broken, although maybe this isn't the case on hard. the controls definitely take some getting used to though. i found a gamecube controller to be better than the wii classic controller, i've never played it with an n64 controller so i dunno how it compares.
Re: Today's date is depicted in Sin & Punishment
I share the same set-up as Immryr, playing S&P's Wii VC version with a GC controller. It is not perfect as those damn analog triggers can be a pain, but I find it more comfortable than a CC pro.
I also think the original is the superior game. S&P 2 is a great action game that makes excellent use of the Wiimote + Nunchuk combo, but it really needed to cut the fat and embrace its arcade-like nature or at least offer a short and condensed arcade mode alongside the regular lengthy stages to avoid being blasted by stupid video game critics.
As it is, S&P 2's stages can be way too long, even more so when you try to score and have to do tons of boring boss milking. A full run with all 8 stages can take up to 2 hours, which is insane. In comparison, S&P has super tight pacing with very minimal milking thanks to the ever ticking timer.
The multiplier-based scoring system in S&P2 seems like a good idea at first, but it encourages stage designs with tons of harmless popcorn enemies to destroy between two bosses to make up for the potential multiplier loss while S&P 1 did not have such issues, seamlessly pitting you against mid-boss after mid-boss at a breakneck speed even though the point value chain still pushed you towards not getting hit.
The stages themselves, even without taking boss milking into account, can be a bit repetitive and padded in S&P 2. Stage 1, 5 and 7 are well-paced and short, but others don't always fare as well. How many Contra walls are we fighting in Stage 0? How many corridors with worms popping out of the sides are we flying in during Stage 3? How long is the Stage 2 section with the red mines? How long is the Stage 6 train boss?
Also, S&P had no real low point IMO and all stages felt pretty cool and varied while still being part of a cohesive universe. The sequel's thematic stages are as consistent as JRPGs locations : the forest world, the water world, the lava world.
Beides, the entirety of S&P 2's Stage 6 should be axed. It has terrible lisibility with orange shots made invisible by the bleeding and shiny orange lava, a battleship sequence that tries to capture the same magic as the original's stage 2-2 but without the crazy camera angles and sense of speed, boring sections where not much happens, and a terrible 3-part last boss where phase 1 has background-to-foreground lisibility problems, phase 2 can be cheesed by spamming the 2-hit sword combo and occasionally dodging and phase 3 is a terrible fighting game that you have to cheese by crouching and putting yourself at a specific distance in order to react to the almost instantenous CPU kicks. Dying at the very end of the stage to the RNG deciding to yank the chain and three-hit combo me to death also feels super unfair. Oh, and to top if off, it is the longest stage in the game.
I don't have an issue with some of the new mechanics as the multi-directionnal flying and dodging, or Isa's charge shot, but the sword's bullet-cancelling ability felt kinda broken against some bosses. And, good thing I don't kind Kachi cute or anything because her charge shot is so useless I would be pissed at being handicapped by wanting to play as her. I wonder if it is even possible to get the Perfect Bonus on the last boss given that one attack has a wall of dividing bullets I can't deflect without Isa's charge shot's wide range.

Re: Today's date is depicted in Sin & Punishment
Kinda funny that this date ended up coinciding with the start of a huge Ransomware outbreak.
Also, agreeing with the notion that the first S&P is the better-balanced of the two. I probably like both games about the same, but I can't deny that S&P2 goes a bit too far over the top and could use some trimming.
