Great western with Paul Newman and Robert Redford playing said robbers. Music was lovely, the acting was great. The yellowish scenes that emulate the photographs from that time were nicely done.

The Limey (1999) - Steven Soderbergh
Absolute shit.
Terence Stamp's "cockney" is as bad in its own way as Dick Van Dyke's in Mary Poppins (1964).
Actually, Soderbergh's Traffic (2000), which I recently saw for the first time, though not as bad as this, was also a wtf? type of deal. And that won an Oscar
It was like an episode of Miami Vice, for Christ sakes. Some heavy "naked emperor" shit going on here for sure. This is a man that the late Roger Ebert dubbed the "poster boy of the Sundance generation".

Clue (1985): ***1/2
Another of the movies I have to rewatch every once in a while. Forgettable whodunnit plot (and the multiple endings gimmick falls flat,) but the actors really make this one. Lots of good one-liners and snark between the various houseguests, and Madeline Kahn and Tim Curry's performances stand out in particular. This film seems a lot more influenced by old Vaudeville performances and stage shows than it does by any other movie I can think of.
Rumors of a remake have been floating around for years but nothing has materialized. That's probably a good thing.

Passengers (2016)
*mgrf*
No. At first I though "too much far-fetched and broken shit", and then realized if the script and characters suck, the ridiculous sci-fi/action scenes are at least a bit entertaining.
Arrival (2016)
It's the new 'Contact', only 21st century lazy, with more feels, and the same amount of "kinda interesting but irritating at the same time".

Alien Covenant (2017) On one hand, it's every bit the "mommy where does alien come from" mystique killer the previews suggested. RIP Messrs Lovecraft, O'Bannon & Giger. OTOH, this series' mythos was never handled well, from Cameron's silly but enjoyable Future Marines VS Angry Bee Boss to Scott's vacuous SpaceJesu, Stomper of Auld Rich Cunts. Horse, stable door, etc etc. If anything, this one at least leaves the series in credibly *snort* alien territory. Bahahaaa! FML. What I mean is, the next movie could conceivably not be about hapless fucktards stumbling onto bad alien shit and all dying. It'll never happen. Hazmat gear? Wazzat?
As a bog-standard space monster slasher, this is okay. Like any common slasher it relies on characters doing incredibly stupid things, but unlike Prometheus, it at least tries to uphold its end of the bargain. Stirringly vicious and gifted a disquieting evil by Fassbender. Although the monster's mystique is gone, I was pleased by the renewed aura of lethality; deftly ditching SpaceJesu for the more tangible matter of wrathful artificial life another good move. Tolerable within its limitations.

Nah, I wouldn't say so. I wasn't going to bother, but morbid curiosity is a bitch.GaijinPunch wrote:Is it something that needs to be seen?

Fassbender is very good in his dual roles, Scott manages some creepy vistas, and there's a couple scenes I'd like to see again, but it's ultimately just a decently vitriolic creature/slasher. Have to admit I enjoyed the creative, clinically explicit carnage. Sat next to a very nice middle-aged couple, the bloke was admirably sensitive to his ladyfriend's consternation at some of the nastier stuff with the odd hushed "Blimey!" and "Crikey!" I wanted to blurt out "AWW YE, THAT GOTTA HURT" in agreement but tbh I was feelin it at points.I basically feel like I'm going to go in... not be surprised at all... and be like... okay... whatever.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Another case of the writers not knowing what made the originals good in the first place.
I thought the idea of the alien world being earth like was a bit wrong. I haven't seen Covenant so I cannot say one way or the other if the movie works with earth like presentation. But what I can say is that the aliens don't look like they come from a earth like planet. And I bet we don't see any of the intelligence in these creatures which makes you believe they can build a space ship, let alone fly it. And thats where this universe is failing for me.

Jeff Bridges keeps surprising me. In this one he plays a alcoholic singer-songwriter who was once a country music star.
If you liked The Wrestler from the previous year, check this out. I know people here don't care much for Academy Awards, but Bridges got the Best Actor award for his performance.

Hospitalité
A Japanese movie about a guy running a small print shop out of his home gets an unexpected visitor. Guy claims to be the son of his dad's former partner at the print shop and gets himself a live-in job. It just kinda spirals into more and more loony but keeps its small feel. The Birthday party is worth it alone to see the movie at least once.

Alien: Covenant
Colony ship Covenant (two thousand hibernated colonists, a small hibernated crew and a Weyland corp. android) chooses the wrong planet to land on. The one with aliens.
If one wants to see the glass half full (well, nonempty) it's a superior direct sequel to Prometheus, with a plot that makes sense, less silly moments, and proper aliens.
However, it must be compared with its really good predecessors: the monsters are less scary (and diminished by disappointing information about their origin), the plot is doomed by knowledge that the aliens are going to prosper and it has painfully obvious "twists", the non-android characters are pathetic cannon fodder (alien incubators, to be precise).
Characters are what irritates me the most: they are so inhumanly stupid that they have not only been deliberately trained to die easily, they must have been carefully selected.
For example, they carefully avoid any reconnaissance of the planet, or at least of their landing site: the crew discovers and even by literally walking into them. Even their ship and their gear are pathetic, with a special mention for the important systems that can be damaged by neutrinos and for glass cockpits and windows in generall.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Just got back from Alien Covenant.
Its ok. The timing of the twist was bad. You might as well have written it on the wall. To make matters worse the character that causes the twist even speaks and gives more hints to whats really going on. I liked it though, but it has faults and its never going to replace the originals.
For those in the UK looking to pick this up on blu ray. HMV are doing a 4k steelbook, which I believe contains the normal HD blu ray disc as well.
Don't know what technology the cinema uses, but the last 15 minutes freezed up several times in my viewing. It was the final action scene to make matters worse.

In defence of his appearance in the Star Wars prequels (I believe his sole appearance was in the Phantom Menace - 1999) he did say that his sole interest in accepting the role was to meet Natalie Portman. Which I thought was very Austin Powers of him

Yes, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have his proper place(s), either. He adds a good bit of comic flair when called upon, for example, in "Yes Man" and "Get Smart".Zen wrote:Agreed. Action Jackson - Can't believe I've not caught this earlier - it's a ridiculous slab of 80s cheese with Craig T Nelson hamming it up as the bad guy, and the perennially under-rated Carl Weathers as the titular hero. It also features small parts for virtually every bit part actor to feature in a Joel Silver production from the 1980s. It's no Die Hard or Leathal Weapon, but it kept me entertained for 90 minutes.

Alien: Covenant.
Didn't expect much, due to the mediocre comments by viewers (I never go on Critics). But, not too bad. Saw it on a BIG screen, so that helped. Major plothole to land on an alien World without respirators/suits, considering that a common cold can wipe out a remote tribe.
The flute scene was EXTREMELY Nasty and there HAD to be a Ferris Faris character
Anyway, I'd put it on a level with Prometheus and still mildly recommend it for a Cinema trip.

Enjoyed it but I think it missed the 'awesome' mark with a few mistakes. Just a bit too shy and lacking a real good finale.
Logan (2017)
Too fucking bleak and depressing. It's an experience in pessimism, but why in the X-Men universe ?
Enemy Mine (1985)
A bit dated and cheesy 'sci-fi with a message', but it's got its charm.
