Employment applications that ask for a "desired salary." Nonono, you control the purse strings here and obviously are not completely clueless as to what you're willing to pay, so you give me a hard number or range upfront so that I can decide whether or not you're worth another damn second of my time. These days the moment I encounter that particular brand of bait-and-switch I immediately drop the application and move on.

These signs have started popping up all around town. It is nice you want to be friendly with your neighbors, but seriously. Do you have to say that in 3 languages when you've lived in the same house with the same neighbors for many years? Our neighbor has one as well!

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
If they're attempting to lure me far enough into the application process that I'm more likely to take whatever laughable pittance they present at the last second, they're miserly weasels; if they're allowing ridiculous offers to fly, then they're lazy and/or incompetent. Either way there's no way in hell I want to work for them; even if I tried it'd eventually come to a head in the ugliest of ways, and by now nothing any of these poor excuses for humanity can offer is worth any more of that, especially when it inevitably starts the whole awful process over again.kane wrote:But I have to say that both parties are at risk there. I negotiated some surreal base salaries just because I got annoyed during the application and put down an insane number, say, 50% more than my best & already above market offer, just to mess with them, and then they honored it.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

How do you even know they aren't doing more? Is there some part of being active that negates the person's ability to put up a sign like that?lilmanjs wrote:That's exactly the term I was trying to remember when I made that post. Likewise how do you know the person with "we support the troops" on their car isn't a veteran? Or has currently active duty soldiers in their family?
A good companion term to counterbalance "Virtue Signalling" is "Antisocial Punishment."

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Honestly, I think putting up a sign showing that you care is doing a lot, especially with the sorry state the US is in at the moment. We are talking about opressed pople who don't necessarily need money, housing, etc. What they need most is simply feeling welcome.
"Support our troops" is a completely different thing, as putting up a sign like that doesn't support anything. On the other hand, if I see a label like that I always take it as a solid indication that the person who put it up is most likely a horrible person. It's not that I don't think traumatized soldiers deserve support, but it's a tendency that goes hand in hand with the repulsive glorification of the army that you also see a lot of in American culture. Support the victims of war, civilians and soldiers alike. Don't support the tendency of fighting said war.

London. I'm here for a course and after one day I question why anyone would commute in these sardine tin trains on a daily basis. Lots of wankers failing to understand basic concepts like letting people off trains, moving down the carriage and how a queue works (hint: you don't sneak up the side of it and jump in at the front).

How James Rolfe and Co. are stroking their cock over all Super Nintedo games, while completely dismissing the Genesis...

That's probably the smallest part of the problem with internet youngsters getting all of their video game knowledge from those two.
Edit: Game Grumps is probably an even bigger offender. Their fanbase seems to be even bigger, and they played maybe like two MegaDrive games ever? One of them being DecapAttack, done without any kind of minimum research behind why the game is what it is (ie American reskin of a Japanese title) and even using it as a scapegoat for criticizing everything Sega, as if it's some kind of general representative of that console.
At least James Rolfe generally speaks very fondly of the MegaDrive when he does play it.
These YouTube heroes are giving me the impression that Sega was never too big in USA, but I still see a lot of US region games out there.

Yes good catch, Game Grumps are even worse. Like, 10x worse...
I still don't like how James keep hammering that the SNES is BY FAR the best console. But at least Mike seems to have an interest in the Genesis(and some respect for it), I'm pretty sure that it's him that pushes Genny games being played on their show.
And as you pointed out, it's so messed up that (Game Grumps, for example, but other channels are also guilty) don't feature nor respect the Genesis, since it was YUGE over here. YUGE!!! Getting 50% market share in North America is quite the fucking feat

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
When did James Rolfe try to push the SNES as "by FAR the best"? Examples? Although he doesn't try to hide that he grew up with SNES and has an inherent bias, I always felt that he respects the MegaDrive, but just sees it as a bit of "foreign territory".
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I can't find it right now, but I think Sega's market share was sub 10% in the 80's. What the Genesis did here in the early 90's no one could have seen coming. It was insane.FinalBaton wrote: And as you pointed out, it's so messed up that (Game Grumps, for example, but other channels are also guilty) don't feature nor respect the Genesis, since it was YUGE over here. You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

WOW we don't have the same perspective on this. Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
But the SNES was the overall best platform of the gen. Definitely not always the best technical performer, and its library has big genre holes, but there's no contest.
I think the problem is they're just hanging to that idea; "it was the best". We're living an era where people need absolutes and they'll make entire shows on youtoob to show the world how much at ease they're with those and they'll teach the audience for likes (not minding the fact that bunches of other channels of 'cool geek dudes schooling the internet about games older than them' and letsplays 'n shit are linked on the right)

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Well let me know if you come across any, because it's definitely not my impression of how James Rolfe talks about it. He's obviously biased, but recognizes it himself. Here's a good example of him showing love for a MD/Genesis game, along with some anecdotes about how approach to the system growing up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IM5gOCUUqoo
They also consider the Sega Aladdin game better than the SNES game. A typically divisive subject, but I feel like it often shows a lot of bias, since it's easy to assume the Capcom game would be better than a wonky western platformer.
They were even extremely open towards Chaotix which to be honest is an absolute trainwreck of dogpoo. The best example I can think of a negative approach is their CV Bloodlines review where they for some reason have some sort of impression that the game is "obviously inferior" to Castlevania 4.
That said, there are a lot of ways he and his horrible friend manages to completely misrepresent games due to both a minimal amount of research as well as actual effort in playing them. I get that "James & Mike Mondays" are supposed to be the casual no-rules show, and you can't expect anything from it, but it's baffling to me how wrong they are about almost everything they say. And it sort of makes me sad, because I do respect James for a lot of what he's done, in spite of all the terrible things he's involountarily managed to instigate as well.
Their failed attempt at playing Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine and subsequently dismissing it as kusoge is one of the most cringeworthy things on the internet.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Also agreed with Xyga, if you had to award one of the two major 16-bit players as "the best" it's really hard to argue that it shouldn't obviously be the SNES. It's so far ahead on so many points, ranging much wider genre-wise in general, and with a really deep library to dig into even if you're just searching for the obsure gems. Genesis is obviously "the best" if you only play shmups though.
Fortunately though, it doesn't matter jackshit who's "the best". It's easy to own both platforms and enjoy everything they have to offer.
Btw, one of the most common mistakes I see when people are comparing the two is how SNES doesn't perform as well as the Genesis, and cite slowdown in early titles to back up their argument. But it's actually really simple. All graphical performance presented by both consoles is entirely hardware and will never cause slowdown on its own. In fact since they are consoles the exact hardware profile is always known by the developers and the only thing that will ever cause slowdown is wasting too many CPU cycles in a poorly programmed game, which again will usually be caused by either lazy programmers, strict deadlines or simply a lack of experience. Usually all three. There's a guy on Nesdev.com who managed to patch out most of the slowdown in SGnG with relatively little effort, and it seems like most of it is caused by some really stupid design choices that could have easily been avoided.

But really, it's unrealistic to expect any better when idiot kids drown out the few sensible voices on the Internet. Speaking of which, there do seem to be a few decent Sega-friendly channels on YouTube. Game Sack is one, and while I haven't seen much of Daniel Ibbertson's content he does seem to have quite a bit of Sega content as well.
What we really need is a site like HG101, but actually knowledgeable.
Your mention of the Cho hack makes me wish there existed something similar for Gradius III.

Just being objective, what the SNES could do technically and the might of its library made it overall #1 of the gen without question, it's just a fact.
If sports games, Sonic, cartoon-comics and Disney based games did extremely well in NA to push the SEGA/MD world, unlike the SNES it couldn't achieve the worldwide market dominance and massive productivity only a 'gen wars winner' is granted.
I would say the same about the PS1 for the following generation, even knowing it sucked in areas and its library had gaping holes too.
Now don't misunderstand me like some idiots lately; of course it's the games one enjoys the most that matter in the end, and like Sumez say we could own both consoles anyway (ideally if you had the money all 'three' adding a NEC machine)
Because it wins the most gold in the most categories doesn't make a platform and its library the most interesting or fascinating. Who didn't want a freaking Neo Geo at home at he time ? *gasm*

I agree with Xyga. The MD is godly, a beautiful beast with superior arcade ports and some incredible exclusives along the same lines. It also had a lot of uncreative schlock and dry areas in the library. The SFC did ultimately win through in terms of market share, but more than that it just has a really vast library with too many good games to count. It's my favorite all time console and that's coming from an arcade whore.

Xyga, you mentionned sports games as being a strong genre for the MD, but you omitted to mention THE best genre featured on the MD : side-scrolling action games.
The MD's library is a bit better than the SNES' one in this area, I feel like. I pick the MD everyday of the week.
Another big genre where the MD is (this time by a very wide margin)better than the SNES : shmups (!)
Skykid, you mention arcade games, but the MD actually has a bevy of great arcade ports. It is one of it's strenghts

"side-scrolling action games" is a pretty broad definition. Yoshi's Island and Mega Man X2 are both action games the scroll to the sides, but are quite different games. Contra 3 is a side scrolling action game, and quite possibly the best one there is.
Depending on how specific you go with that one, I think SNES has the upper hand there, but you definitely want to keep a MegaDrive on hand for some of Treasure and Konami's games.
