A chat I had with a friend... (somewhat game-related)
Today I was chatting with a friend on MSN... part of it was something like this:
Friend: Hey, since you're into games, tell me something, is it true they're making a Playstation 3? I haven't read about games for a long time, been busy with other stuff.
Me: Yeah they're doing it, and will probably cost $800 to manufacture. You're really out of touch! Bet you haven't heard about the Xbox360's release either. [sends wikipedia links]
Friend: Damn, that's expensive. And this PS3 controller looks awful! How good are these systems?
Me: They're about the same level, supposedly. But there's also the Nintendo Revolution. [sends wikipedia link]
Friend: Man what is THAT? This controller looks AWESOME!
Me: Yeah. True gyroscopic 3D control system, that detects location, motion, and angle!
Friend: No way! Really?
Me: Honest! Seems everyone else thought "let's make a more powerful system", Nintendo thought "let's make something completely different". Here, check this. [sends link to TGS '05 Revolution teaser]
[then I tell him all that's rumored about it, lower pricing, possible uses of controller, the virtual console and the old games...]
Friend: I WILL BUY THIS SHIT EVEN IF I HAVE TO ROB A FUCKING BANK!!!
...
Such passionate reaction makes me wonder... maybe the Revolution really is so interesting to the average public that Nintendo really is going to kick Sony's ass and grab the market back.

Well, interest can only take you so far...once people start actually playing the thing, they hafta like it.
Of course, no one's had a chance to do that yet, so who knows how the next-gen pecking order will turn out. In any case, I have no plans to buy another system for quite some time, so it hardly affects me, heh heh.

I had a similar conversation with a friend earlier this week. He never owned a console in his life, and only plays games occasionally on his PC, but he too considers getting a Revolution. It really seems that Nintendo is successful with their "aiming at non-gamers" strategy. Playing games with a remote control seems to have a certain appeal to some people.
I don't care what happens, just so long as Bill Gates and Ken Kutaragi realize what big fat jerks they are.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

At least Xbox lets people put 2D games on their system without hassle. They earn respect points from me on that alone.
Has there been any news of how the downloading of old-school Nintendo games will work on the Revolution? I can't wait to see how that pans out.

"I've always wanted a thing called Tuna Sasimi!"
As of right now, I think the rumors are that it's an online pay-per-game thing, with a different pricing structure for NES/SNES/N64 games. I think a 'rental' type system is still a possibility, too. Hopefully they will give out free 'bonus' games once in a while.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

Sony are already developing something called "the wand" which is very similar to the Nintendo revolution controller.
Mind, it will be additional to the $800 system.. but my bet its more like $499 at the most as I believe it will not come out until Xmas at the earliest.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I had a simmilar experiance with one of my buddies at school. A typical X-BOX (me and my elitist gamer friends call it the MAN-BOX) Halo loving type of guy. After seing the Rev's controller and hearing about the old games, he no longer cares about 360 and keeps asking me about any new news from Nintendo's camp.
On a semi-related note, the amount of cute girls playing Animal Crossing on DS at my campus keeps increasing at a steady rate. "I see your playing Animal Crossing, I play too. wanna swap friend codes...?8)" hehe, too bad my knowledge of Japan only DS games always fails to impress...
