Please help my choose good CRT for retro gaming

Post by cachaito »

Hello forum members!
I'm preparing to buy my first CRT tube for retro gaming (mainly SNES PAL/ NTSC, Gamecube). I've chosen couple of consumer Sony Trinitrons models that I've found around my area:
  • KV-E2521D
    KV-E2961D
    KV-29FX30K
    KV-29LS35K
My main assumptions are to have a decent CRT with:
- one RGB SCART port
- one S-Video would be nice too (NTSC Gamecube)
- 50/ 60 Hz instead CRT HD with 100 Hz

I'm not sure in 100% if KV-29FX30K and KV-29LS35K are not 100 Hz because after reading whole manuals for them there is nothing about it. In similar (also white) model such as KV-29FX64K (http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4087257611.pdf) there is clearly written that it has 100 Hz picture feature.

Another question is which screen diagonal is better for SNES 240p (if any). I've heard that KV-C27 is the best option.

I will be most appreciate for any hints, take care guys.

I basically reccomend SONY or Jvc. they Are both excellent tvs.

Jvc wins hands down in the weight department. They weigh almost half what a comparable sony does.

some jvcs are also 750 or 800 TVL. you can look the model number of the tv up on jvcs website to figure it out.

you will not have fun trying to get the sony moved.

both however are excellent, clear sharp tvs for gaming.

I think when you actually look at them, they will either say 50 or 100HZ on the back cover sticker.

Excuse me Cachaito, but didn't you start a very similar thread less than a month ago?

Anyway, the first two sets (ending with the letter D) seem to be quite old, and as such won't be 100Hz. The third in your list is newer but according to this spec list it's not 100Hz either. The instruction manual of the last one doesn't say a word about 100Hz which most likely means it isn't.

Finally, I don't know what to say about your last question. You don't need to dedicate different CRT TVs to different SD consoles. If there's anything to be said about this, it's that very big sets may be unwarranted or even counterproductive for such a low res signal, but it's up to personal tastes.

As it has been explained already, that refers to the power line frequency, which is unrelated to the refresh rate in all modern TV sets.

Hi Xer Xian!
Excuse me Cachaito, but didn't you start a very similar thread less than a month ago?
- in previous post my main concern was 50/ 60 Hz and retro playing in PAL. Thanks to your links for chassis descriptions and interesting forums I selected a bunch of models available in my area (it's amazing how many people want to get rid of old, big CRT tubes). Anyway, I wanted to ask more experienced users about this choices. And maybe if someone is from Europe/ Poland - can advice me to wait and search for different CRT model?

About reply of mvsfan - I'm surprised that JVC models are so popular in my country! Size and weight of CRT (up to 29`) is not a problem for me and I definitely will look closer at them. Thank you for hint!
