Multi-perspective shmups
I tend to like these because of all the differing angles and elements introduced to the gameplay. My first experience was from a FMV title called Us Vs Them which really had focus on the differing ways the game would change based on which character you were playing, but I really haven't seen anything like this since until I picked up Philosoma for the PSX. It's not a FMV, but it really plays out legit and in a number of ways feels like a spiritual successor.
I haven't found any others besides the two I mentioned, so is anyone willing to help add to the list?

Strania, Eschatos
Gradius 3 AC had that 3D bonus stage.

Astebreed
Salamander (somewhat; it has horizontal and vertical stages)

FMV, now there's an abbreviation I haven't seen in decades.

Re: Multi-perspective shmups
Einhander changes the camera angle from time to time, but never fully shifts away from horizontal.
Extremely minor example, but Ironclad is usually an angled-hori like Progear, but sometimes its stages play out like a traditionally flat hori with walls and such like Gradius.
Not sure if you want to count the Sin & Punishment games, but they do this on occasion (like Astebreed, but in reverse). The second one even has a few segments that almost play like a typical shmup.
Oh, and I guess there's some of the sample games in Dezaemon 3D...

Re: Multi-perspective shmups
I have to say my game Beekyr Reloaded (still in Early Access) has that too.

Re: Multi-perspective shmups
Does Axelay count? It moves from vert to hori between levels... I suppose the hardware wasn't powerful enough to shift perspective on the fly at that time.
Re: Multi-perspective shmups
Ajax alternates between vertical and 3D levels, each with different playable ship (helicopter and F-14 respectively)
Re: Multi-perspective shmups
These weren't mentioned and fit the bill:
Galaga - Destination Earth (PS1)
Retro Force (PS1)
Definitely not the best out there, but I guess both can provide some level of pure cheese if you're in the mood.

Re: Multi-perspective shmups
G-Darius semi-counts. A bit of tilt here and there, switching direction, that sort of thing.
Ether Vapor is definitely what you want.
S&P2 isn't really a shmup, but it does a ton of perspective shifts, from into-the-screen to horizontal and all.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Re: Multi-perspective shmups
Maybe I'm mis-remembering but I think ALLTYNEX Second had perspective changes.
Re: Multi-perspective shmups
ALLTYNEX Second has little cutscenes that introduce enemies and stuff with different camera perspectives, but the gameplay itself is all vertical. I haven't played through all the stages, though, so I could be missing something.
Metal Black has those 3D-ish bonus stages that nobody seems to like.

Yeah. They look so cool... but they take ages and there's barely any gameplay. Really just filler.Shepardus wrote: Metal Black has those 3D-ish bonus stages that nobody seems to like.
but damn, they look amazing

The prologue stage pretty much "quotes" corridor ones from Contra.null1024 wrote:S&P2 isn't really a shmup, but it does a ton of perspective shifts, from into-the-screen to horizontal and all.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

Re: Multi-perspective shmups
Besides what null1024 said, an enemy can just randomly decide to fuck with you and leave the screen for ages. Which is bad for scoring given how those bonus stages are worth tons of points!Shepardus wrote:Metal Black has those 3D-ish bonus stages that nobody seems to like.

I gotta admit they are pretty cool though. The deadly choreography between your missile and the locked-on enemy can be a marvel to watch!

TwinBee Yahho has a couple of parts where the view shifts to the side to simulate your fighter performing a roll.
