Best screen protector for New 3DS?

Post by Ikaruga11 »

I'm wondering what is the absolute best screen protector for the New 3DS? In terms of protection, clarity, and preserving color? Price is not an issue for me. I just want the highest quality screen protector for a New 3DS that will offer the best protection and sharpest clearest image with no color loss.

I don't want my screens getting scratched, although it seems that Nintendo has fixed the self-scratching design flaw of the original 3DS and 3DS XL with the New 3DS and New 3DS XL.

Which brand offers the highest quality?

I've used Hori screens and they're good. Tempered glass is all the rage right now, not sure how it performs though.

Yeah, I've done a lot of research and have heard very good things about Hori. After all, they made the GameBoy Player controllers, which are god-tier in design and craftsmanship.

Tempered glass sounds very enticing, with using real glass and all instead of plastic. However, I've heard that is mostly used to protect against fall damage. Also, tempered glass screen protectors are designed for standard displays and capacitive touch screens, not for resistive touch screens like the 3DS uses. I believe glass would render the touch screen unusable since no precise pressure can be applied to it in a specific area.

Consider this: HORI released two screen protectors for the Switch, and their more expensive one turned out to be terrible, bubbling and peeling off the console when you used it in the dock. They make good stuff, but their screen protectors aren't always so hot.

On a capacitive touch screen, tempered glass is the hands down winner (it even feels better), but I've no idea how well that works on a resistive touch screen.

If it completely stopped the touch screen from working, I don't think they'd sell it right? What do reviews say on 3DS tempered glass screen protectors you've seen?

All of the tempered glass screen protectors for the 3DS are for the top screen only. A plastic one is included for the bottom touch screen, because glass can't be used for a resistive touchscreen.

Isn't the actual 3DS screen made of plastic though? That would explain how it's able to scratch itself in the first place. Wouldn't glass be a bad idea since applying it could potential scratch the screen? I imagine the clarity and color preservation is far better though, at the the expense of being more reflective though.

EDIT: So it appears that AFUNTA and Akwox both sell tempered glass 3DS screen protectors (top screen only obviously), while a plastic one is included for the bottom screen. Based on reviews, it seems like the AFUNTA brand is much better. The glass is thinner and hasn't been reported to crack unlike the Akwox brand, and includes everything you need. Both are available on Amazon for sale. AFUNTA is $7.99 and Akwox is $6.99.

What makes you think so? I compared my New 3DS XL to my old 3DS XL when I got it and they're identical in terms of design when it comes to screen contact (my 3DS XL scratched its own screen). Either 3DS XL should scratch its top screen when you put a bit of pressure on it.

The non-XL New 3DS has different design, sharing it with the XL consoles which is probably better than the regular 3DS, but it'll probably scratch its top screen equally much as the XL.

My New 3DS XL will be my only handheld with a screen protector. It's the only one that needs it due to terrible design. The PSP needs it too since the screen plastic on that scratches much more easy than any other plastic screen I've seen, but since the faceplate is so easily replaceable I don't bother. I wouldn't recommend trying to replace the 3DS screen covers.

I sort of doubt you'll find anyone who has tried multiple 3DS screen protectors here. So figuring out which is the best one isn't going to work. Due to the self scratching design I would definitely recommend a glass protector for the top screen though.

Personally I also got a Hori hard pouch to reduce situations where pressure would be put on the unit and it could scratch its top screen.
