Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
Once Upon a Time in the West.
Aside from yet again marveling at the levels of richness Fonda is able to invoke in Frank's stare ("Now that you mentioned me by name.../Who are you?/What's your name?/Keep your loving brother happy." - and when he hits the dirt), my attention this time was drawn to, maybe the first time, the character of Mr Morton. What a subtle balance to make a tycoon not sympathetic by his ailment of tuberculosis, but by his dream to unite the coasts with the tracks and reaching the Pacific. His staring at the painting with Morricone's music finally touched me. How this theme plays as his own dirge is beautiful. And what an end this man gets accordingly, haha. I sorely miss this piece on the album.

Snake Eyes
Dug this out on LD last night as not watched it in years - it was never a great film, but it's still very entertaining, got better with age I think. Sadly reminds me of how wasted Gary Sinise is nowadays... great actor.

I have recently watched a movie “Secret window” with Johnny Depp about a writer, who tries to write a book in a strange, remote house. I really like Johnny Depp as an actor and usually movies he plays at are good and remarkable. So was the Secret Window, thrilling and mysterious. Still a little bit uncomfortable with windows in the dark
Have read that Depp is selling his 18 century house in France, which looks gloomy and mystic like in the movie: https://tranio.com/traniopedia/tips/fro ... he-market/
I wonder if the house in the movie belonged to Johnny Depp

EDIT: Oh, duh! Judge Dredd (1995). It's the second entry in the Sylvester Stallone/Rob Schneider power-duo saga.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Re: Movies you've just watched
No comment at all on the movie's merits/lack thereof (only ever half-watched when it'd show on daytime HBO), but Virtuosity (Denzel Washington/Russell Crowe) always felt similar in tone to me. Dated 1990s dystopia with VR elements, rather violent, somewhat campy hero/villain leads. I'm not into Demolition Man so take w/ grain of salt.
I prefer DE RANNING MAN for that stuff.
edit: oh lmao. I'd wondered what other dated-as-fuck 90s movies about DE DANGERS OF VR followed in The Lawnmower Man's wake. Turns out Virtuosity was by the same director. Also Stephen King took legal action against New Line over TLM, because it was actually some random POS called "CYBER GOD" and they just stapled his name onto it. King's actual short story has nothing to do with VR, and is also pretty fuckin' creepy/blackly farcical. Apparently it has an earlier short film adaptation, might have to check that out.

It's far from a "great, great" movie. It's ok. Passable. Riddled with flaws, overlong and summarily stupid.gbaplayer wrote:The Prestige

I will admit it goes to the extremes but its actually one of my favourite Hollywood movies. American Beauty, Identity, Green Mile and The Butterly Effect being some other high recommendations.Skykid wrote:It's far from a "great, great" movie. It's ok. Passable. Read it before and always found it amusing, but I do think you may have leaned a little heavy on the pedo interpretation. I get the angle, I just don't think the character is that one-dimensional.Mischief Maker wrote:I'm not a fan.neorichieb1971 wrote:American Beauty
That said I never thought too much of American Beauty the one time I saw it. Perhaps I should watch it again.

Re: Movies you've just watched
It touches on much more than pedophilia. Every character has a tolerance or a sensitivity, both have thresholds and it shows you what happens when they threshold is breached with surprising results. Pedophilia comes into it, sleeping with your boss/competition, thinking your son is gay. Considering the movie is what it is, i'm surprised I liked it.EmperorIng wrote:A movie celebrating pedophilia loved by the Hollywood liberal elite? Reading that review, I'm more interested in hearing any potential vitriol towards Juno - that movie was very popular with my teenage self and cohort. I was also a huge Arrested Dev fan at the time and hungry for more of any of the cast. =)

Superbly timed.Mischief Maker wrote:So we open with a digital camera recording a girl in her underwear (played by a Barely-Legal Thora Birch) complaining about her pedophile dad. An offscreen voice asks "Do you want me to kill him?" Then she looks at the camera and says, "Yeah, would you?" No doubt a line that sent a chill down the spine of the movie's target audience, freezing their arm in mid-jerk.

Only things I recall from AB are the retarded plastic bag scene, and the bit that inspired one of my most treasured ag99-related posts.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I lean heavily on that because it's the only detail in the movie that's not directly ripped from Fight Club. At the time of the review I was pissed that The Insider lost best picture to AB, but now I'm even angrier that Fight Club, with the same plot but gloriously superior execution, lost to this warmed-over pablum.Skykid wrote:Read it before and always found it amusing, but I do think you may have leaned a little heavy on the pedo interpretation.
Also Alan Ball's followup movie "Towelhead" featured a pedophilia-based plot as well.
In all seriousness Dredd (2012) is a completely superior movie with multidimensional morally ambiguous characters, several themes exploring the limitations and dysfunction of punishment-based law enforcement, and one-ups AB's "with proper artistic framing even garbage looks pretty" with "in super slow motion everything from splashing water to a guy getting his face shot off can look beautiful."neorichieb1971 wrote:It touches on much more than pedophilia. Re: Movies you've just watched
I like "Leon" as well. I found the relationship between Natlie Portmans character and Leon rather refreshing. The unconventional makes for much better storyline telling then the usual Hollywood template.
And then there is those scenes where Leon just kicks ass. And Gary Oldman gives one of the performances of his career. Angry bloke that he is.

Re: Movies you've just watched
The original cut of Leon though has the 'pedo' line at the end. IIRC the explanation for it is that the character is immature himself and kind of wakes to aldulthood by accident with that improbable preteen girl. His abnormal life explains his sexual retardation in that he couldn't have met normal women for a normal relationship, the controversial part of it is that you're supposed to sympathize in a way and pardon him, yet he dies almost immediately after, sorta like a martyr the writer forces on you before you can really judge.
Most people I know have seen only the edited version, which in lacking that line stays on the suggestive level instead of being full-on controversial. Sometimes a single line/scene can heavily change the tone and reach of a movie.

Get Out. 4/5
Imagine Wes Anderson making a mystery/horror/thriller/comedy. I would have given it a 5/5, but I don't enjoy jump scares.

"The Lost City of Z"
*Should* be called "The City of Lost ZZZZZZZZs". Remember how long it felt sitting through "Lincoln"? Wanna feel that way again? See this movie.
The most entertaining part of the movie came when a woman seated in a seat several rows in front of me took out her phone to use its flashlight so she could root through her purse to find something. That drew my interest, happily.
There is some decent aging of the characters via makeup and such, and some of the photography is nice. It's a slow, *boring* movie, though, and there's no actual payoff.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I never really paid close attention to that movie it so I always thought of it as "that movie with the naked girl covered in rose petals which is probably a romantic comedy or something". Never would've guessed it dealt with a pedo. Goes to show how unfitting that scene is, I suppose.Mischief Maker wrote:I'm not a fan.neorichieb1971 wrote:American Beauty

Out of curiosity, I watched the plastic bag scene you mentioned in the review (review that I suppose is way more enternaining than the movie itself), and wow, that's some incomprehensible bullshit.

In fact in 2000, a year after the films release, and generally accepted as a consequence of its perverted themes, the "Don't look, Don't tell" Bill was introduced and overwhelmingly passed.
It was discovered that good looking high school girls dressing up in skimpy outfits and bouncing up and down in an attempt to look sexually attractive, were coming across as, well, sexually attractive. Horrifically, it was further found that men liked to look at said display.
Expert testimony at the time also showed that American Beauty was a tipping point, in that it contained two elements which are anathema to feminists;
1. A man that doesn't give a fuck any more.
2. An attractive, slim, feminine young woman.
Arguments about which of these two caused most offence are ongoing to this day.
I hope this was of help.
P.S. Some said that the empty bag blowing around represented the idea that, only when one empties oneself of all that which was forced into ones psyche, yes even if your "accepted propose" was to contain said forced realities, one was then free to fly on the winds of truth.
But the common man . . . sorry, person, said "WHAT?!?" and it was all agreed to be forgotten about.
