Watched Martyrs as well, same as the other abomination mentioned above; I wish I hadn't.

There's a line between horror/gore/thriller, and psycho sadism voyeurism. You get to wonder what's wrong in the head of the people who write, direct, play and produce that sort of shit.
That 'level' is rare, foul, repulsive, anti-human. Usually you only find such by accident in the niche-st manga, comic and literature, where you'd rather burn the screen and your browser/reader app along after reading.
Making a movie in that category is never a good idea imho, unfortunately it's been a trend in French cinema for a while, with some directors crossing the line in a gratuitous manner.

Oh btw they dare dedicate the film to Dario Argento. the insult.

I've not seen any of them, but the third has my affection for this one scene. Great practical effects, even greater acting.

I had the same reaction. The description I read made me think it would be a more typical revenge film, but it's just the worst kind of torture porn. Out of the 600+ movies I've seen since I started keeping track of them, I'd put it in the bottom 2.

^ I wouldn't say it's a 100% bad movie, only that what it shows is unacceptable. Everyone knows absolutely horrible shit happens, but normally people choose to not illustrate it with their work. Not by weakness or self-censorship but because of natural mental self-preservation, for themselves and the others.
It's already hard to deal with in words, but pictures, films, even drawings, whether it's real or fiction, can be harmful to most audiences.

What is so "disturbing" about Martys and which version are you speaking of? I think there is more than one Martys movie...

The franco-canadian film from 2008 directed by Pascal Laugier.

Torture porn defines the category well, it deserves to stand in the same dump as A Serbian Film, although the latter is probably even more abominable.

EDIT; well this is totally off-topic since movies like that have nothing in common with good old times horror flicks. *shrug*

I read the wiki article on the movie, sounds like horrible shit to watch.

I just looked up A Serbian film and Martyrs's plot summaries on Wikipedia and while I agree that they seem to be terrible watching experiences, the plot descriptions make them sound so ridiculously over-the-top in their absurdity that I couldn't help but burst out laughing reading them. The former in particular has absurd levels of WTF going for it.
neorichieb1971 wrote: Also, I am a massive fan of the Japanese live action version of Death Note. Again its not your typical horror with jumps and scares, but the premise alone is enough to get you sucked in. US remake coming out shortly with lots of action scenes lol. The Japanese version already has 4 movies. The first 2 are good, 3rd i've not seen but heard its just ok. The 4th is somewhere in between and just came out.
I had no idea they were so many Death Note movie adaptations. I heard one of them changed one of the mid-point developments in an interesting way :
Spoiler
Instead of getting killed by Misa's Shinigami, L uses the Death Note on himself to temporarily protect himself from other Death Note users while giving him enough time to bust Light before he ends up killed.
Does this really happen in one of those movies? And if so, which one is it? I am curious to see what that change leads to.
