I think this game has one of the absolut best game soundtracks ever. The game is fun too, but damn does it get hard later on  Still, there are some really great bullet patterns on some of the bosses

Really enjoying this one, a lot more than i would have thought. But shot button tapping get's tiresome pretty fast

Batsugun Special.

This one blows the nornal version, the ending and credits was removed which is a sad thing. Loop 2 is pure fun though :P

The ending and credits are still there, you just have to complete all four loops.

Made it past The Rival Battle in Phantasmagoria of Dim Dream, now on to face The Sailor of Time.

Man this game is just too hype. Penultimate opponents manic teleporting boss form brings to mind Dracula in CV, except I'm scrambling to sight read and wager through the constant offense/defense reversals and epileptic super-flash blasting turn-abouts.

Revisiting Elemental Master and going for a Maniac clear. Currently getting smacked around in stage 6.. haven't made it past the pike bridge. Hey, remember all that tight maneuvering with a massive hitbox through moving spikes on a narrow bridge... now do it with wind! That's some Kaizo Mario bullshit.

Also been improving my scores in Trouble Witches (Neo on 360 and the Steam release). I'm finding the enemy placement in the Steam release to be really chaotic.

Due to a recommendation by user Bananamatic in another thread I checked out Battle Traverse (for PC).
It was a bit off the beaten track to get and a cunt to getting to run, but now that it does, I must say I quite like it. There are certain similarities to Progear, and some things that it does in a totally different way, but that isn't necessarily bad, on the contrary. For example the "never bomb, even if your balls are about to fall off!"-rule doesn't exist

I have to ignore the in-game player sprites though, they don't really work for me. Other than that: quite a good game and not exactly expensive.

One of those rare titles that I've replayed and cleared many times despite being relatively easy. Wonderful, manic little adventure, that one.

The trick with that bridge is to tap horizontally with the spears, I find, counteracting the wind while letting the autoscroll take care of vertical progress as much as possible (outside of clear openings to dart ahead). Of course in addition to the wind you're being sniped by unreachable zako, too, which is where a pre-prepared fullscreen charge shot comes in handy. I can no-damage it pretty reliably, it is a bitch though! As some cold comfort, there's life restores ahead.

The boss immediately after is textbook
Spoiler
"shoot don't dodge," too. Properly timed, the ring's charge beam will block her destructible bullets (while murdering her face) very nicely. Gets too close for comfort if you try to dodge, as I did on my last revisit before remembering WTF I was supposed to be doing!
^ demo of above boss technique to illustrate

Oh hey, how appropriately \m/etal. :o Image SATAN/SAVIOUR/FATHER/LAWWWRD HAVE MERCY UPON ME Image

Despite their more freewheeling design ethos, Tecno Soft did seem to to favour the prickly hitboxes in their MD shooters. Complements EM's hectic pace and big guns perfectly, I think, making aggressive movement paramount. Can't micrododge with that bigbox, particularly amidst the relentless pincer pressure, narrow confines and stage hazards. Maintaining control's not too hard, but holy fuck does it require you hustle and shoot, proactively sundering the hordes with mighty charge blasts. Wizardly and metal as fuck. An easier yet manic as all hell shooter, neat trick.

Heartbreaking failure in Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream Lunatic. Made it up to Yumemi Okazaki. Got to her with a shocking 3 lives in stock. Started dying horribly, and on my last life I got down to one measly half orb of health, then died. So close to the 1CC yet so far. Grr. ;_;

Played Murasaki on PC recently. Very cool little game that was originally a free release. Curious how little talk it gets here but thats the case for anything really.
(small review)
Spoiler
Ingenious game that combines a shooting game with puzzle elements. At first it may seem the puzzle element overshadows the shooting game but that's only when the game is teaching you the mechanics in the beginning. Later on it gets demanding and expects you to master both strategic shooting and bullet dodging.

The main mechanic of the game is sort of a block puzzle. By shooting colored blocks on the backround layer you can push them around. Knock blocks of the same colour into eachother and they explode dealing damage to enemies and bullets. Larger chains deal more damage. If you cancel bullets this way on bosses they take damage. This may sound confusing but the game really shows you through it and in the end the core mechanic is quite simple. The challenge to the player is figuring out how to deal with various situations on the fly. Often times you'll find yourself thinking out when to shoot and figure out a plan while managing your way through bullet curtains. Murasaki encourages you to be smart about your shooting sort of like Ikaruga or old school 80's shmups.

A bullet health system is the other half of the puzzle mechanic. A bullets color matches its health and they are damaged by block explosions or the players shot. It's implemented quite well and makes you choose between shots or the size of block chains to go for. The default character is far better at cancelling bullets (ie. defense) while the other can land bigger attacks off the puzzle blocks. The latter also has to be careful going to the top of its screen as she has little range to shoot downwards. However dont expect to be able to always rely on bullet cancels, on higher health patterns this wont work. Often to get larger block chains for tricky sections you will end up not shooting for extended periods and having to dodge much more.

Murasaki's soundtrack is really amazing, top notch and there's a lot of competition in this genre. The chill music on stages goes well with the puzzle element and boss themes match their intensity. A fair bit of music syncing, especially with the true route of stage 5. Even if you're not a fan of the gameplay itself the music might surprise you.

After getting the ending you unlock the 6th extra stage which is far more challenging than anything preceding it. The boss of this stage truly demands some dodging skills and figuring out the tricks of its patterns. If you're not a shmup veteran this stage will likely be a wall, but smart play is still always rewarded so it can be enjoyable to learn shmups in this way.

The game includes a hard mode for the first 5 stages which makes their difficulty curve match more with the extra stage. The bosses get significantly harder and you need to approach some stage sections more as a puzzle. Stage 6 on normal is still tougher than anything in hard mode. There's also an endless stage that really tests your skill in the puzzle element as you cannot memorize and it keeps on getting tougher.

Definitely one of the best value for money for STG/shmups on Steam unless you have an aversion to bullet cancelling gimmicks. Murasaki implements its idea well and is a joy to play. Should be refreshing to anyone who thinks shmups are out of innovative ideas. It's worth noting this was first released as a free game, and for that it is quite amazing.
Got a 1CC on ESP Ra.De. yesterday. In retrospect it seems much easier than most cave games or clones. Presentation is great though and I always liked the idea of the secondary shot.

Been mesmerized by Last Resort the past few weeks, haven't played a lot, but I just made stage 5.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

I've been switching between Chiyuri and Ellen. I once heard Chiyuri is apparently the hardest to 1CC with but I dunno, her charge shot rips apart bosses well and her fast movespeed can be handy...

It's very much a luck based affair in Lunatic, with bosses making some fairly ridiculous dodges. Do you spam lv 2 or 3 gauge attacks? Save it for the survival bomb? I still don't know what works best. Chiyuri's lasers combined with her aimed shots makes her the highest tier character in vs play IMO - human players just can't deal with it the way the AI does, weaving in and out of those lines...

I know Chiyuri's tough to clear with, I was just determined to really see if she was the trickiest to clear with or if it was Ellen, with that damn slow charge speed and iffy charge shot, but more precise movement and ridiculously screen filling gauge attacks. I usually like Marisa or Rikako for general play, actually.
BareKnuckleRoo wrote:Wait, you've had the good fortune to play PoDD against human opponents?
There's a local group of folks who meet to play shmups. We've had various matches of PoDD, PoFV, and Change Air Blade. They all feel and play differently, but they're all amazingly fun to play as (I find them more playable when setup with autofire). It's also a very different game when playing against a human opponent since being aggressive is a much more useful tactic - if you see your boss attack has activated, throwing out a level 3 gauge attack to overlap can really mess them up and force them to bomb it, or risk taking damage. It's amazingly fun. I've never tried TSS before, but I'm really into bullet hell style games and it looks like it relies on large attacks rather than smaller bullets. Plus PoDD's variety of attacks really appeals to me (and I love the PC98 era music). PoDD in VS feels a lot different, and having a fast charge attack often is really beneficial so you can quickly attack your opponent right after you get a long combo going.

PoFV is less hectic since the hitbox and screen real estate are generally more forgiving, as well as being able to clear bullets with gauge attacks. I'm quite fond of it too, and its wide character roster is a lot of fun to experiment with in VS - Sakuya's EX knives are really hard to pay attention to since they come horizontally from the enemy's screen!

Change Air Blade is really crazy for VS and matches can end really fast due to how damaging some attacks are, but it's really satisfying to attack your opponent directly! Those boss transformations are also really cool, but you get no invulnerability if your boss form is destroyed so someone can run up and use a melee attack if you go low. Some of the melee swipes are strong enough that a direct hit will destroy the boss form and rip off an entire lifebar from your health at the same time (since you're instantly vulnerable as soon as your boss mode is cancelled).

I know Change Air Blade can be setup to play online - I don't know about PoDD but PoFV can be I think, too. Not sure how reliable its netplay is but it'd be fun to try that out sometime.

TSS's genius counter system and match flow is a masterpiece of game design and easily one of the greatest things ever wrought by human hands. I highly recommend.

Also at high level play dodging/sight reading fireballs basically becomes equivalent to Psikyo 2nd loop, except everything is randomized. Absolutely beautiful.

I did not expect to love this game as much as I do. I had little to no expectations for it (I think I was expecting it to be a twin stick shooter for some reason), and I can't get enough. I am garbage at it and can't grade above a B+ yet in any stage, but this game is so much fun.

Phantasmagoria of Dimensional Dream

Hooboy, still as intense as ever, even in the early game. Made it a little farther on Sailor of Time this time, and didn't have as much trouble with the preceding rival battle. I think I'm getting there.

Darius II (Mega Drive version)

Gave it a run on Perikles recommendation. Set difficulty to expert for the hell of it.

Good fun. Much snappier with the faster move speed whilst retaining the visceral punch of oldschool arcade Darius. Stages feel a bit long, but that's okay.

Dragon Blaze

Gave it a return. I've loved and appreciated this ones mechanics for over a year or two now, but I never quite noticed before how intense and hotblooded the combat feels even when you have most of Psikyo's infamously sterile routes memo'd. Wonderful time even without any successful progress into the second loop.

I don't know about that. I think with all the good PS4 games coming out, how can you not be happy? If you're talking about just shmups though, then I get it.

To me the game is at its best when you've completely memorized it, as that's when you can best engage with the game's rhythm without reservation. I think certain aspects of the game such as the slow, dense bullets (compared to other Psikyo games) and the unsealable suicide bullets paired with an emphasis on close-ranged attacks only really make sense when you've got a plan to misdirect the threats. I was slow to learn the game because I would much rather play the parts I already know than try to figure out new stages.

Very nice! I take it that the game doesn't counterstop at 8 digits like you were suspecting?

As for myself, I've been dabbling with a few different games. I played a bit more ring^-27 after putting it aside last December. I learned how to unlock five extra modes so it's not like I have any lack of things to play around with. I encourage others to play it, if only to justify the existence of the highscores thread - if I were to post scores for all the modes I've played it'd be a wasteland of dozens of tables with one entry each. I've posted plenty of info I've gleaned from it in the highscores and strategy subforums' respective threads, so the lack of explanation of its systems shouldn't be an issue anymore.

I've also been playing some Raiden DX - I'm a fan of the thrilling stage designs and enemy attacks, and the graphics and sound effects are incredibly satisfying, top-notch even today, but I never really liked the Raiden-style (yes, I know it originated before Raiden...) weapons and powerups, and the bosses annoy me to no end especially as I keep screwing up the stage 1 boss point-blanking tactic. The medal flashing actually doesn't annoy me as much as I thought it would, other stuff such as the fighting spirits/"Guts" rating discourage me from taking score seriously.

More to my liking is Thunder Dragon 2, which combines swift enemy movements and attacks with brisk movement and responsive weapons. I always draw comparisons in my mind between this game and Dangun Feveron thanks to their speedkill-based scoring and enemy waves, but I've been playing this one over Dangun recently because it feels more manageable to me. Not so much the overall difficulty, but more about how chaotic and overwhelming all the item collection can get in Dangun Feveron, and how much I suck at its bosses (TD2's bosses feel easier on average and less random to me, though that may be because I feel more encouraged to use my bombs).

I played a few credits of Out Zone too - I love the music and the gameplay's fun, but man do I suck at it.

Last but not least, since last weekend I've been playing a lot of GR3, a freeware Gradius fangame in the style of the MSX Gradius and Nemesis games, created by NIGORO (or GR3 Project, as they were known at the time) before they created La-Mulana. I'm very surprised at how little mention this game has gotten on this forum, so much so that to make up for it I'm going to create Hi Scores, Strategy, and Shmups Chat threads later this week when I have more time. The creators are fairly well-known, albeit not for shmups, and there's a page on it on the Gradius wiki and an entire Japanese wiki dedicated to it, but I couldn't find more than one or two passing mentions here. I myself knew about this game years ago (back when I was first playing La-Mulana), but only now put in the time to get past the first stage. If you're familiar with La-Mulana, especially the original freeware version, GR3 plays pretty much exactly how you'd expect a shmup from that team would play. I'll leave it up to you for now to figure out what exactly that means, but suffice it to say that it's not for the faint of heart (especially the "Re-Death" version, which remakes all the stages into much harder versions). Sadly, different versions of the game require different versions of the Java Runtime Environment, and even versions that run in modern JVMs may sound different because the Java MIDI synthesizer (yes, the soundtrack is in MIDI, and it's actually pretty good) was changed relatively recently. You shouldn't let that stop you from taking the game out for a spin, though - it's clear that a lot of love (and perhaps an unhealthy dose of sadism) went into the game.

^^^I find a great deal of tension comes from ones apprehension with tackling the more risky elements of the route. There's a very real volatility there.

Generally not a fan of static dodging (at all) as 3 years of posts have evidenced, but DB's mechanical risk/reward factor is sublime no matter how you slice it.

Anyway

Battle Traverse

Bought this along with a few other things. Gave it a credit on hard mode (which, I think was the default). First impressions:

The stages are a bit too long. Maybe it's just my imagination, but they seem to just go on disproportionately long compared to how slowly the difficulty ramps up. I don't remember any of Cave's stage 2's or 3's being this long.

Seeing it in person, the art is better then it seems in videos. But a lot of little nitpicks really hold the aesthetic back. In particular, I actually do like the character sprites now that I notice some nice little bits of detail on their animations (the girls hair blowing in the wind, for instance). But they'd be 1000x times better if they were slightly less super deformed. For comparison, Fio's sprite in Metal Slug is also very cartoony but her proportions exist within a certain boundary that allows her to be taken seriously admist the action, while still being cute and expressive. These are just too chibby to nail that "believably tough" feeling while still being charming.

I suppose that is one of the true advantages of low res sprite art: being able to emphasize important details while implying others that don't technically exist.

Other then that it's okay. I like the sense of scale on the boss vehicles (ironic considering the teeny zako toy helicopters feel completely wrong), but it also brings me back to the previous Metal Slug comparison. The machine designs in MS were also deliberately over-the top silly warhammer-esque ultra death contraptions in order to gel with the cartoony player characters, and here there's a very real disconnect between the sleek plausible military sci-fi designs and the cutesie player avatars.

I guess I go on for so long about the aesthetic here because there's clearly a lot of work put into it, which is a shame that it lacks that crucial imaginative spark and nuance to really be something visually special and memorable. Whatever though, back to the gameplay:

Patterns are okay. But very Cave-ish. I like Progears mechanics, and I could see an aggressive system based on a combination of point-blanking and bullet cancelling being up my alley, but so far (much like Progear itself) I'm not feeling the proper balance that would get me into it. Need to play it more to see if that'll change.

9/10 it's alright.

Stella Vanity

Now here's a game that may or may not be worse designed but entertains me more by the sheer weirdness factor of it all.

I'm still getting acclimated to how the system works, but so far it has a really nice emphasis on "destruction", building up a chain/combo/multiplier before Shifting and going all guns blazing. Vaguely reminds me of Kamui in that regard, though with a lot of extra crap thrown on top.

I wish the pattern designs were as offbeat as the mechanical clusterfuck surrounding them, but eh I guess we're still waiting on a proper Hellsinker 2. Fun times.

It's kinda funny, I tend to compare those two games myself a lot. There are many similarities between them, but I think they are even more apparent if you pick the 2P ship in TD2.
I wouldn't recommend you do that though if moving all over the place in DF to collect items was too overwhelming, because the P2 side ship in TD2 is also going to make you do that with its narrow shot and high moving speed.

Don't hesistate to bomb against bosses if you need to; most of them can be killed / almost-killed with just 2 of them.
Being so generous with bombs and not punishing you for using them is one of the game's greatest strengths IMO. It's beautiful.

All over the place lately:

Last Resort - Stage 5
Strikers II - 1-7
Blazing Star - Stage 3
Progear

Some non shooters in there too.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
