80's is my best thing in life..
i dont watch today movies anymore..i mean not intersted..nothing impressive..
yes there's some good movies..but 80's is Gold..and i mean the cheezy acting and effects
and great B-Movies(sci-fi,horror,teens comedy,new noir)..

i'll watch Brain Damage 1988..still ther's no good copy yet
im waiting for Brain Damage Blu-ray: Badge Exclusive Limited Edition coming in May 9

Yeah 80s movies are great but don't dismiss the 90s => I loved to go to the cinema up to about 2005. After that cinema sadly went to shit . There are ocassionally a few good / great films nowadays but they are far & few between the vast majority and sadly the majority is shit .
A big problem I see nowadays is: nowadays with CGI everything is possible, but the writers have no imagination and just copycat the plots from movies that did well at the box office => every movie feels the same and most important, they have no "heart & soul" + political correctcness is the death of all creativity.

Wasn't sure what I was gonna get into with this as it didn't sound like much like any of Takeshi's other stuff. There's some quite violent stuff at times, but for the most part I was just blown away how everything just worked. The score was fantastic, the shots at times were just really pretty and almost made you forget about the depressing nature of the movie. Is this an asian cinema classic? I'd say so.

Yes Hana-Bi is one of those films that has such a sad (almost depressing) story but at the same time there is a beauty underneath the surface (there are not a lot directors that can do that better then Takeshi Kitano).

I'm similar with Lynch. I prefer Blue Velvet - my favourite of his surrealist works - to Lost Highway or Mulholland drive; not because they're bad films, but because Blue Velvet actually has a storyline composition in the sense of a beginning, middle and end. More rounded, if you will.

My local arthouse theater is playing a bunch of Lynch, in preparation for Twin Peaks Season 3 I assume. (And Blade Runner Final Cut which I'll miss due to a trip to see mini me.). Actually looking now, it's only on their mobile site -- not their PC site. Ugh. But yeah, Mulholland Drive is missing, and it's the one I haven't seen. (No flying tomatoes please). Maybe I'll do that this weekend. Weather is supposed to be shit. In Chicago... go figure.

Fight Club

The best thing about Fight Club in the current political shit storm is that out of touch conservatives took the "you are not a unique and beautiful snowflake" line and made it an insult to liberals. To sum up: they're using a line from a film whose very existence mocks capitalism.

Blue Velvet was envisioned as a complete story from the start.

Mulholland Drive is a pilot for a new Twin Peaks-esque TV show from Lynch that wasn't picked up by ABC. So Lynch took his pilot and tacked on an unsatisfying ending, but eased the sting by including copious gratuitous nudity with the new stuff.

I never read the book, but I think I might now. Great movie worth a watch. Some of the backgrounds look great too.

I liked this more than I expected to. Some of the plot kind of falls apart in fridge logic, but the visuals are quite nice, and it doesn't spend much time getting bogged down in filler the way some of these movies do. Probably my second favorite Disney CG animated movie (with Tangled being the first).

Toni Erdmann

German comedy, with plenty of feeling, important topics, and very funny moments. Threre's a surprising amount of nudity and sexual explicitness. I recommend the original version, with a very significant frequent switching between German, English and Romanian.

Ms. Ines Conradi works as a strategic consultant for an oil company in Bucarest. Her father Winfried, retired, visits her for her birthday and sees how unhappy she is.
So after a few days he pretends to leave but, being used to take jokes seriously, he remains in Bucarest in the ridiculous persona of Toni Erdmann, freelance life coach, in order to watch over Ines. He makes himself so inconvenient and obtrusive that he causes a crisis in his daughter, changing her for the better.

Featuring, among many other funny things:

• A terribly sad quasi-sex scene.
• A nudist party. (Not really.)
• A traditional Bulgarian Kukeri costume, the plain and creepy common type with long hair and no face or decorations.
• A Hummer limousine.
• A few songs.
• Handcuffs.
• Egg painting.
• Cocaine.

But more importantly, a good script, good actors, good editing and a very clear intent comparable to the Italian classics of the 60's.

A remake with Kristen Wiig and Jack Nicholson has been announced as almost sure. Aaaargh!

Still worth a watch though? I never saw the sequel but loved the original. Got to see it at a pre-screening with the director as well. I was surprised it was directed by some quiet unassuming Welshman.

I saw two martial-arts movies this weekend with friends. Police Story with Jackie Chan, and Bloodsport with JCVD.

Police Story, what a treat. The incredible destruction of the shantytown in the beginning had all of us staring in disbelief. Is this the quintessential Jackie Chan movie? It definitely shows why he will always be a legendary craftsman and a competent action director to boot. The man knows comedic timing; this is something not so easily grasped.

Bloodsport is a total cheesefest. Every cliche thrown together with Cannon Films' blessing. I love how pointless the two cop characters were. The beyond-dumb wrestler turned out to be a real bro. I love it. The homoeroticism in the movie is palpable (pretty sure the only kiss in the movie is between Jean-Claide. Just big sweaty dudes beating each other up, flexing their chesty-muscles.

I think Bloodsport might be worth watching for the music alone. Hot damn.

Meh. Just skip to the action sequences if you must. Some cool bad guy with weapon entities, and good choreography with a similar level of ultra violence - but the 'plot' part is total fluff, and long winded fluff at that. The movie is far too long for its own good and frankly boring to the point that you're barely attentive by the time a fight actually occurs.

Lacks the simplicity and brevity of the original: a perfect setup for the adrenaline fuelled battle madness on show.

But Slither is an out an out comedy. It's nothing like From Beyond. It also has a lot of practical effects in there too.

nice, police story was an eye-opener for me re: jackie chan. i'm still working through his other stuff (and would love to hear recommendations btw). If you liked Police Story, you'll probably like the sequel too. I remember seeing a documentary on youtube where he talked about some of the stunts in those movies, and how injurious some of them were! haha

His brand of action is so much more interesting to me than the usual shootbang explosion stuff that you see everywhere else. They're the perfect mix of genuinely impressive stunts and creative, well executed fight choreography. It's hard to find anything that tries to match that formula (Chocolate is also good).

I guess this would be my tier list, judging from my ratings:

4.5/5 - Police Story
4/5 - Wheels on Meals, Supercop, Drunken Master
3.5/5 - Police Story 2, Armor of God, Drunken Master 2
3/5 - Project A, Project A II, Dragons Forever, Armor of God II, Miracles
(2.5 and below not included)

Rumble in the Bronx is his only Hollywood movie I've seen since I was a kid, so I left those out. I didn't like it too much. I should probably rewatch some of these since the details are getting a little fuzzy. My ratings for Armor of God II and Snake in the Eagle's Shadow seem well below the average, especially.

Chocolate is absolutely awful. Mentioning that junk in the same paragraph as Chan is a disservice to the man.

KONG: Skull Island. Went and saw it on a BIG screen a few days ago.
Aesthetic-wise - Nicely shot and beautiful backdrops.
Lots of predictive programming in it. Almost nonstop for the first 15mins.
The actual content was very sparse. The whole film plot can be described in a few sentences (apart from the pre-advertising stuff, which you could rattle on about for ages), but nevertheless I'd recommend it to be seen in a cinema on a large screen. Worth seeing for the spectacle.

The cool sci-fi/horror/action hybrid flick by the name of "The Hidden" circa 1987 is another one of those movies worth revisiting for ol' times sake. There was a proper sequel titled "The Hidden 2" released to direct video back in 1993 with a cameo appearance by actor Michael Nouri whom got 2nd billing in the 1st one -- it didn't live up to nor match the high bar set with the 1st one.

It really did a number on me. I must have had a fever the first time, because I thought it was amazing. On second viewing it was terrible. I guess I must've only remembered the credits goof takes, which really sells the fight scenes.

BTW, Skykid, is it still impossible to see Deadpool in China?

I watched Deadpool ages back. I'd be in the liked it camp. I appreciated the humour and ultraviolence mix up, my only real problem was when the plotting lost all sense of intrigue and became wearyingly pedestrian - at which point the humor started to take a knock too.

But most of it was a good watch bar the last fading 30 minutes or so.

Yes I've watched After Hours and it's one Scorcese's underrated movies but I like it a lot.
You should check Crimewave (1985).

From Beyond has awesome practical effects. Society / Dark Society (1989) is not the greatest movie storywise but it also has some amazing practical effects .
