Genesis 2 and PVM 20m2mdu

Hey guys.

I just picked up a Sony PVM 20M2MDU and am looking for the absolute best way to hook up my Sega Genesis 2.

So far I've found:

Is this all I need? Are these good choices? Do you have any recommendations for higher quality cables?

Oh and one more thing, I don't think my PVM is coming with a power cord. Do I need a special one or can I just pick up a cheap AC cord on Amazon?

You've got everything covered connection wise. The only thing I can think of that you missed is if you aren't using external speakers you'll need a RCA stereo to mono adapter like below as the 20M2MDU only has mono audio input.

As far as power cable any typical 3-pin power supply cable works fine. If you want you could find a special one like found on some Panasonic TV's for more security that will clip into the outside of the socket, but that is entirely optional.

I forgot to add, the scart to BNC cable i got had a sync stripper? Do i need this or can i go with one without it.

No problem! With the cable you have in the first post you won't need one with a sync stripper as it is already using the Genesis' csync output. So buy the SCART to BNC adapter linked above.

You don't ever need a sync stripper with a PVM. Even for consoles don't have clean sync, the PVM will accept composite video for sync.

Thanks for the responses. I noticed a mention of terminator caps, is this something I need before I plug things in? Also if I want to hook this up to a Dreamcast is it the same SCART -> BNC cable?

Also, while I wait for my SCART cables to arrive is there anyway to hook up a console with composite just to check the monitor? Looking at the back of the TV just confuses me.

I don't think the M2MDU needs terminator caps on the RGB outputs as I am pretty certain this is automatically handled. Dreamcast would just plug into your existing Scart to BNC adapter with a Dreamcast Scart cable.

You can use the Video in port to connect a composite video cable. I don't recall if that is a BNC style connector. as well. If it is you can use a BNC to RCA adapter. The same adapters can be used to attach a PS2 or Wii via component. If you have any S-video cables those will plug right in without any adapters.

Ok so I finally got everything and hooked up my Genesis 2 to my PVM. On the first level of Sonic 2 there are some blue bars on the left and right sides of the monitor. I tried touching the overscan settings and it either gave it a blue border or cropped too much. Is there a way to fix this? I didn't notice the bars on the next level.

A more general question. What is a good way to calibrate the monitor? Ive seen people post pictures of a grid of lines and dots, colors etc. Is there some software I can use as a calibration test? I recall hearing something about using a dreamcast 240p disc or something. Plugging everything in and turning it on looked pretty good to my eyes. Colors are super vibrant. Just want to make sure I'm getting everything I can out of it.

Also, with the genesis scart to bnc cable I bought, is there a way to hook up audio to the PVM or only external speakers.

Any help is appreciated!

Those blue bars are just area that is usually masked by overscan on a consumer CRT. You can adjust this in the service menu, but there is also an overscan/underscan setting button I think that you should try first. I haven't really had time to setup or play with my 20M2MDU yet. This button allows you to have two settings for different systems based on their overscan. If you adjust overscan in the service menu in one mode of that button it stays saved on that mode.

What you need to help calibrate is 240P test suite and reading some guides on here on how to best use the service menu to adjust each setting.

It's most easily ran from a Dreamcast, Wii, or Sega CD since you can just burn a CD or soft-mod without needing to buy additional hardware. The other systems will require you to have a flash cart to run on actual hardware.

For the audio on the PVM you will need a Stereo to Mono RCA adapter as mentioned earlier.

You'll loose stereo separation and have lower quality due to the tiny built in speaker though, so it's preferred to use external speakers instead.

Never, ever use the internal speaker on PVM. It's an insult to the sound designers and of the games you're playing.
