Which sticks are installed in Japanese arcades?

Post by tzakiel »

If I sit down at a dodonpachi or ketsui cabinet in Japan, is it going to be a standard Sanwa JLF with a square gate? Or do they put seimitsu sticks and octagonal gates?

Not asking for preferences, just wondering what's actually used over in Japan in most arcades.

Having played DDP in Hey in Akihabara, I can say it was definitely a square gate, as with all the shmups in the arcade. At that time, I only had experience with an LS-32, and I could tell it was not that. Now having experienced a JLF, I think it very well could have been that, but it's hard to remember after the fact.

Both JLFs and LS32s are common, both with square gates. You might see some JLWs too although those are much less common nowadays.

Sometimes LS-52 and LS-58s are in, but typically JLFs and LS-32s with square gates

In Hey! on the shmup cabs they generally have an LS-32 on the Player1 side and a JLF with a standard square restrictor on Player2, which is a pretty good idea and keeps everyone happy. Of course this could get a bit troublesome with P1/P2-side gameplay differences on games like Thunder Dragon 2 etc..

Interesting. Are you supposed to play p2 if you prefer a Sanwa stick?

I think if you go to any fighting game cab it's going to be JLF. In the old days though Seimitsu was very popular, generally Neo Geo cabs used LS-40's I believe.
