SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT
It's also getting a Steam release, which I'm looking forward to now since I would have otherwise been stuck with the inferior Vita version. This is of course assuming that the Steam version will be based on the PS4 version.

I'm curious to know why XSEED wasn't able to get the localization rights to this game. They've been handling the Ys series in the West for quite a while now, so it's a bit odd that NISA will be doing this one instead.

I wonder if its moreso to do with the fact that XSeed could be tied up doing the Legend of Heroes games

Without any official word, just speculation though

EDIT: Found word from Tom (aka Wyrdwad) on XSeed's forums topic on the issue:
http://www.xseedgames.com/forum/index.p ... 202/page-2
There's no need to worry about us: we're doing just fine. The reason you haven't heard much from us lately is because we've been busy finishing up big projects like Fate/Extella, Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns, Akiba's Beat, Trails of Cold Steel II, and Trails in the Sky the 3rd, all of which are massive projects that ate up months of time for each of us, and most of which are only just now starting to wind down.

We certainly would've loved to work on Ys 8 ourselves, but Falcom made a business decision to work with NISA on it, which we respect. We wish our friends at NIS America much success with this release, and I'll tell you right now, I'll certainly be preordering a copy. ;)

So yeah, looking like either money or resources, I'm leaning more towards money but hey

Let's not forget that XSEED is quite a small company, employees-wise. Don't know if being merged into Marvelous bolstered their ranks, but AFAIK, they always worked with limited manpower.
That could explain why they had so much on their plate that they had to let NISA publish Ys.

I'm extremely worried about this given NISA's impossibly garbage reputation when it comes to localization, not just in terms of terrible translation, but also cutting content and introducing bugs which were never in the original Japanese version to begin with, many of which remain unfixed to this very day. It should be impossible for any localization company to be as consistently (or inconsistently since some games they localize manage to escape relatively unscathed) bad as them without ever improving, or still getting projects to work on for that matter. To name one or two examples:

Kondo also said somewhere that the future of Ys in the West depends on the success of Ys 8 in the West, which is why it's even more depressing to hear that the carefully built-up reputation of Ys in the West which once only extended itself to Turbografx fanboys but in the present has seen many hardcore fans thanks to the solid localizations of the Ys games by XSEED, is about to make a crash landing at the most crucial moment.
Regardless of how it turns out, I'll be buying it. And a machete.

I'm subscribed to one of exceeds members on twitter, and she was incredibly depressed about having ys 8 yanked out of xseeds hands. They definitely wanted to do it.

*edit* durandal already posted the tweets I was referring to. Yeah. This was falcom's choice, not theirs. And they've made a very big mistake, it seems.

I share your sentiments exactly. Will buy it on release, but I'm highly skeptical Nisa will do the game justice and be any more successful than Xseed in widening its audience.

Fingers crossed that NISA does at least an alright job. Cutting content or creating new bugs would be the worst thing they could do.
If they botch it, I think Falcom may not give them another go. At least PS4 -> PC porting should not be overly hard. NISA does need to refrain from throwing in any memes. Then again, I find it heartening that they promise dual JPN/ENG audio. They may be serious about this.

KIM that NISA did publish Celceta in Europe. So all might not be lost. Also, Tom is quick to point out that XSEED & Falcom are still in good standing.

I wouldn't mind seeing XSEED cut a deal to do their own de novo port of Celceta to PC sometime, without using Joyoland's code. Falcom could easily localize that for Japan with their own text from the JPN Vita version.

After The 3rd, what's left of TLOH? Cold Steel III will probably happen and I wouldn't doubt XSEED gets that one. OTOH, the TLOH 7 games Ao & Zero are probably not happening unless XSEED would get a deal going with BOTH Falcom & Kadokawa for the Vita versions. There is a Japanese version of Zero on PC, FWIW.

Finally got started on Chemtrail in the Sky the other day. Only been playing it on the train during my daily commute, so progress is really slow.
I usually love the Falcom style, but man, at this point the game is so ridiculously generic that I'm actually finding it offensive. I hate the main characters, I hate all the story beats that the game seems to follow only because "that's how JRPGs are", paired with mechanics that we have all seen a billion times before explained through a drawn out condescending tutorial.

If it weren't for the fact that everyone ever seems to love this game, I would probably have stopped by now. But I'm gonna pull on through. I hope.

I think of the game as more of a rebuild for adults of the classic 16-bit jrpg themes. It basically takes that particular ethos and sense of "innocence" but grants it a whole lot more dimension by very slowly, methodically filling out and developing the characters and world over the course of 120 hours and more text then then war and peace (actual number). The plot, world, characters, and their associated arcs are fairly straight forward when you get down to it, but the sheer time and attention to detail spent developing them really breathes a life into it all that those 16-bit jrpg's only possessed through childhood eyes.

If you took the game and abridged it to 30 hours, reducing it down its key setpieces without any of the little moments sprinkled throughout that make it what it is, it would indeed be as generic as your first impression says. But over that massive playtime it really crafts itself a soul. For me at least, by the end of the journey, it manages to perfectly crystallize and encapsulate all the best memories and feelings associated with the genre that I rarely experience from those games or the medium in general any more.

Also, the battle mechanics are quite good once the game opens up. But it'll take a long time for that to happen.

Sadly, if you're not charmed relatively quickly, I have no idea how far you'll be able to make it in, or if feel anywhere near the same way by the end. Like I said, the game is very methodical in terms of both gameplay and story.

Nice. They kept the flash move evade from Ys MOC. Very happy about this.

So the "shellcracker" has a pickaxe instead of using his fists? Hmmm... interesting, but I think I like fistfighters better.

I liked the charater portraits in the other games better though. The style in 8 is a bit less apealing to me, but that's just nit picking. Also can't connect with the pickaxe guy, don't really like his design.

Overall very happy, especially since they kept the gameplay exactly like MOC, which is great. With faster item use even

I don't get it : can't we already get the physical game through Play-Asia? The Limited Run releases are usually a bit more expensive, right?

I think Ys Origin was originally announced to be available for PS4 and Vita via digital distribution, which is why this sounds like exciting news for physical enthusiasts.

I'm still clinging on, but there's so much stuff that puts me off in this game. I'm not a fan of the super slow pace of the combat, especially not paired with how the game decides to award you practically zero exp for anything other than enemies that are way further ahead in the story than I am. You can run around and do all the sidequests you like, but every battle in there feels like it would have been treated more effectively by just running away. Even if those enemies are perfectly able to otherwise put up a fight. And seriously, whose idea was it that we keep enemies in the overworld but make them practically impossible to see? A combination of an awkward viewing angle, a limited widescreen resolution, the PSP's screen being bad at displaying motion, and some awkward decision to make them all semi-transparent. The game encourages preemptive attacks on enemies, but getting it requires an awkward pace of taking a few steps at a time and adjusting the camera angle to the least awkward one.

I really hope I can manage to stick with this game long enough for it to start being rewarding. :P At least I'm just playing it on the train on the way to work etc. so it's just a casual time waster at the moment, and not threatened by anything else.

I'm still clinging on, but there's so much stuff that puts me off in this game. I'm not a fan of the super slow pace of the combat,
I have mixed feelings on the pace of combat myself.

I think the main cause is that Falcom tried to put a lot of their feel-good sense of action into the blows, making them all feel weighty and impactful. I can appreciate that, there's a lot of oomph there and the sound-design is really top notch imo, but those animations really do slow things down quite a bit.

Ultimately, I think it's part of the games character and eventually is more then made up for once you start to learn how to open up the system. Once it opens up, one of it's greatest strengths becomes apparent which is that not only is it possible to kill everything with basically no grinding, but there are multiple ways of doing it each battle. A difference in positioning or smart use of chains (introduced in sc), status ailments, and spell timings can really turn the tide. I'm also a massive fan of the fighting game-esque meter that builds with damage taken/received. Having those two resources to manage (especially later on when you get lots of interesting craft skills and abilities to exchange them) is great.

About exp scaling: the game really does scale hard, but that's usually telling you you're about good for the next major battle. In SC it plays a massively useful purpose in that you'll be switching party members in and out frequently, and low level characters who missed a lot of action basically get instant-leveled up by the massive scaling to catch up with the rest of the team.
