Lightgun on NESRGB with Nintendo Multi-Out to SCART cable?

Post by Dochartaigh »

I've never used SCART connectors before and just ordered everything to convert my RGBNES, SNES, Sega Genesis, and PS1/PS2 to SCART so I can hook up everything (with a SCART to BNC cable) to my Sony PVM for a proper RGB signal.

Am I going to have any issues with the NESRGB mod in regards to the lightgun signal? Gotta play my Duckhunt ;) Even the person building it for me (Yurkie, recommended by the NESRGB website) didn't know about lightguns as he doesn't ever use them. The NESRGB he's building for me is the toaster style and will have a Gamecube multi-out port just like the SNES uses in the back. I'm then using a multi-out to SCART csync cable.

I know on my PS1/PS2 I need to get the SCART cable with RCA lightgun RCA port, or use my Guncon multi AV plug which has the yellow RCA jack to plug the Lightgun into.

I've also listed my entire setup below if it's relevant (of something doesn't look right below PLEASE let me know!):

NESRGB with GameCube (SNES-Style) multi-out port in the back
--- retro_console_accessories (eBay) Nintendo multi-out to male SCART csync cable

SNES/Super Famicom
--- retro_console_accessories (eBay) Nintendo multi-out to male SCART csync cable

Sega Genesis
--- retro_console_accessories (eBay) Genesis to male SCART csync cable (with stereo RCA plugs since my Genesis is modded for that in the back)

PS1/PS2
--- retro_console_accessories (eBay) Multi AV out to male SCART luma cable WITH RCA plug for lightgun

SWITCH:
Bandridge automatic SCART switcher

CABLE FROM SWITCH TO PVM MONITOR:
WookieWin (eBay) Female SCART to BNC + Audio cable (I need to pickup a male to male scart cable to link the switch to this cable - any suggestions for a good quality cable or adapter? Only one I found was a 4' cheap looking cable for $4.50 on eBay...).

You'll be happy to know the NESRGB works just fine with light-guns.

I use mine to play To the Earth, Duckhunt, and Hogan's Alley every once in awhile (I got mine modded by Yurkie too). Light-guns work using s-video coming out of the multi-port too. I was surprised, but even using a SCART to component video converter it still works with light-guns!

On a side note wookiewin sells a version of that BNC breakout cable with a male SCART end. If you don't already own the female version I would suggest ordering that one. I have the female version like you mentioned and it works great, but I don't have a scart switch so I just swap my consoles one at a time. The rest of your cables look good to me, I'd just make sure your genesis cable matches your console since there are both model 1 and model 2 versions.

EDIT: Wait a minute are all the cables you want female SCART ends? That's unusual

Good to know it works!

And I got them mixed up - all the cables from the consoles are MALE (I edited my OP). I went with the Female SCART to BNC because I wanted to be able to hook the consoles up directly to that cable - didn't notice until today that the SCART switch I ordered is only female so I need a male to male SCART cable or adapter to make it work (which I wrote WookieWin and he does have gold plated shielded ones which are short - I grabbed one).

While we're on the subject of cables, what do people do for the original Xbox? The best light gun game ever (House of the Dead II/III) is for the Xbox! I know retro_console_accessories on eBay doesn't sell one for that. Should I look for luma or csync? (NES, SNES, Genesis are all csync, but was told to get luma for PS1/PS2 so Xbox being around that era maybe it's luma as well?)

Composite sync > sync on luma > sync on composite video

Luma for PS1/PS2 is because those consoles don't output csync. Looking online, apparently neither does the Xbox, so your best bet is luma for sync.
