CRT Repair Tech in Chicago area for NEC XP/XM?

Post by johndp977 »

Hello,

Thought I would at least ask here first in case anyone has any recommendations based on personal experience.

I was able to snag an NEC XP3790 locally and the picture has some discoloration issues (blues look green-ish, reds look purple-ish, etc), primarily in the upper corners. I suppose that it could be anything from a simple degaussing issue (the degauss button on the remote does nothing, perhaps the coil is bad?) to a dying/damaged tube.

In any case, before giving up on it, I'd like to find a qualified individual or business somewhere in the Chicago/Milwaukee area that could take a look and perform repairs, or at least definitively determine that it can't be saved. Anyone in the area have any recommendations?

Thanks for reading.

Grab a cheap degaussing wand from eBay and save your money.

Thats a BIG Crt. That degaussing coil should be NOISY when you first turn it on. IF its not its not working.

I have the same monitor and I can say the remote is a bit unresponsive at times.
But like MVS said, you should definitely know when you hit the degauss because the tv will make the same sound you hear when you turn it on.

Thanks for the replies.

Definitely agree that the remote isn't super responsive, though all the other buttons eventually respond when prodded a few times, and even when using the basic controls on the back the degauss doesn't seem to do anything. And yeah, there doesn't seem to be the typical *buzz-twang* sound that you'd expect when it's powered on, I have monitors 1/3 of the size that fire way more noise. So this at least gives me some hope that there may not be a catastrophic issue with the tube itself.

I might see if I can manually degauss it on my own. Though money and other motivations notwithstanding, I probably do still have a desire to have the unit itself repaired if possible. I'll start the research and maybe follow up here if there's a positive local experience to report. In the meantime, if anyone local stumbles on this thread and has any recommendations, please let me know.

Thanks again!

Remotes tend to get very dirty on the inside. It might help to simply open it up and clean it on the inside. I've "fixed" countless unresponsive RC's this way.

As for the degauss not working: This is usually caused by a defective thermistor, which is an easy fix. But the only way to know for sure is to open up the set. :)
