Super Famicom 1CHIP RGB Issue

Post by Figbash »

Hi all, I've been having the hardest time with SFC RGB.
I'm running a PVM 2530 and all my consoles look great on it with no issues. I bought an SFC awhile back, it is a 2CHIP and has the awful horizontal smearing. Beyond the smearing there aren't any other issues with the 2CHIP.

I recently bought a 1CHIP-02 and thought my troubles would be over. I'm using the same (retrogamingcables) CSYNC cable and official power adapter from my 2CHIP.
The picture has horizontal bands of brightness that slowly roll downwards. It's somewhat subtle, but enough to ruin the image quality. The picture looks great beyond that. It seems like some sort of interference that only the 1CHIP has.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is it possible 1CHIP SFCs need a different power adapter, or is there some issue with using CSYNC on them? I'm a little tired of spending money on this system, so I wanted to ask if anyone had experienced something like this before I go out buying more cables :)

You didn't mention what country you're in and what power standard you use.
I had an issue similar to what you describe with an AVFC (NESRGB) connected to a dinky Chinese charger that looks like a cellphone charger. I was only seeing it on one of my RGB modded TVs so I thought for sure it was the TV with the fault, but the same TV had no rolling picture issue on original composite video (just the normal crap picture quality).

Eventually I realized I needed to try with the original, 10-pound brick that came with the FC. I got one, and it solved the problem. Here in the USA we use 120V, and the original brick is rated for 100V. Things were a little over-volted and warm on 120V but I consider it fairly safe - but I did pick up a step-down anyway and that's how I play it now.

Here's a video showing the problem I had: https://youtu.be/Pj-r27yqOGo

I'm in the USA. That problem looks fairly similar, though I have no static just the rolling. I'm using an official Japanese SFC adapter, maybe it has simply gone bad?
I have an RGB NES as well using the same cable and it's perfect, so I'm guessing power is the likely culprit. Thanks for your input!

OK I'm running everything through an Extron 201rxi, and that is the issue with this particular console. Nothing else has ever given me problems so I didn't think to check it. Just thought I'd let people know if anyone else has this problem!

On my old setup I used a 203 interface and a certain horizontal position range would give me interference, but any position a little left or right of that did clear up the problem completely for me. Was really weird and might not help in your case - still wanted to mention it.

I've tried everything to get rid of it, messing with the dials and the jumpers and changing the power outlet, but nothing seems to help. It's too bad because my 2530 doesn't have external geometry controls so I run everything through the 201 or it's super cut off on the left.
I foolishly opened it before and adjusted it to be perfect for composite (all I had at the time was an NES), then I got shocked by brushing the frame with my arm so I'm pretty wary of opening it again. Obviously once I got RGB cables I realized that RGB input needs completely different settings :)

did you try using a different power supply? a bad capacitor in the power supply can cause the rolling and lines in the video.
