Winstratos [Demo avaliable!!] [Greenlight]

Post by Paulo Cezarino »

Hello, guys!

Winstratos is a project I've been working on my spare time for quite a while. Tried some little different mechanics like a camera that zigzags between stages and a high speed ship for dodging big obstacles. It's on Greenlight, with a full trailer and some HD screenshots!

Gameplay:

Each ship has two modes: fighter, for frontal attacks, and mech, for area control. Some ships have special powers, like chargeable homing missiles, which can be triggered by letting go of all buttons. There's also a turbo mode, for quick getaways, totaling only three buttons.

Defeated enemies also leave coins, which can be just collected or attracted by stopping shooting, which leaves some interesting combos with the charge shot.

Due to its nature, controlling with the keyboard can be a little tricky, so a gamepad with a control stick is highly recommended. Itcanalsobecontrolledbythemousepleasedon'tkillme

Shield system works similar to UN Squadron, but I'll problably left it for casual difficulties only.

Collect coins or get good ranks to unlock new ships (I plan on making a lot of these, including special variations of each ship with a harder skill ceiling).

Scoring:

Pretty straight forward. Defeat all enemies and collect all coins before they leave the screen. It's imperative to keep changing between modes and know when to shoot and retreat. There are also medals located in hard to reach places, usually between obstacles, and inside some groups of special enemies. Taking damage also reduces the Stage Completion meter, regardless if the shield is on or off. The only way to get the special ranking is 100% everything.

It's not finnished yet, so I'm very open to new ideas!

Graphics

Everything is made by digital painting, and I added some pseudo 3D effects to create atmospheres somewhat like Darius Gaiden.

What do you guys think? :)

The project was having some bad troubles due to its HD graphics, but now I picked it all again and fixed mostly everything. I'm now updating those pages with new content!

Looks great!
Graphics are cool; bullets look very visible.
The gameplay looks very, very frenetic which is awesome (as long as it's manageable)

From the video on greenlight and the gifs here, it seems that the game is too fast to play with traditional inputs. (in other words, it looks designed around mouse control.)

Which is not a bad thing plzdontkillmeeveryonejusthearmeout if it's done right.
I've played plenty of good shooting games which use the mouse; here it looks like it's the 'right' option.

I think all the ideas presented here are great, so keep up the good work!
