SILVERSCREEN TRILOGY 1 SCART SWITCHER in America

Post by holaplaneta »

Before knowing about options like the gscartsw v3.4 scart switch, I decided to acquire through ebay a Silverscreen Trilogy 1 Scart switch from UK to the Americas at what seemed a good price ($30usd).

Now that I have many NTSC RGB modded consoles I want to give it a try, since I bought it for the glaring review at videogameperfection.com

Unfortunately, on the back of the unit, where the Eight Fig power cable connects to, reads “230V~ 50Hz”. Man I wish the review mentioned that since now I don´t know if I can use this with my NTSC RGB modded consoles… Anyway, the games in NTSC are 60Hz, so even if I convert the power would the games run at 60Hz? I´m afraid of connecting it to power because I don´t want to fry it.

Any ideas or suggestions? Is there anything I could do to make this thing work in the Americas at 60Hz? Thanks.

Would be easiest to get a step down transformer like this

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004MPR3WW/

I don't think the 50hz would be an issue

Your screwed brah. You could run it on a dryer or hot water heater plug at 240v 60hz.

The timing of the video will come from your scart source from your ntsc console. So In theory you could overload by 20% but I would worry about extra power going back to your consoles or your switcher frying being within a full 20% tolerance.

The above converter will not work. It only doubles and halves voltage. It does not translate timing or 230 to 120.

Just 115 to 230 and 120 to 240

That's nonsense, a simple step-up converter is all he needs. The frequency of the powerlines hasn't affected the frequency of televisions in many, many years.

Edit - Something like this would do the trick just fine. http://www.beststuff.co.uk/store/MW-45- ... verter.htm

The converter you listed wouldn't work either. That one takes us 120 and steps it's up to 240. If he didn't want to use a 240 line he would need to step down.

And both of those options do not adjust your hz. If he uses a step down it will be same as using a 240v 60hz line and will be over powering by 10v and 10hz

The supply to the box just powers the box. The frequency of the picture signal is not affected. The voltage/frequency only matters to the power supply electronics in the box, it has nothing to do with the picture passed through the unit....

Europe has varying voltage outlets, roughly from 220 to 240V, just like your US line will vary from 110 to 120. All machines are built to deal with that, so a voltage doubler is all he needs.
and will be over powering and 10hz
The frequency only matters if the machine uses AC coupled motors. All I can think of right now are old record players, but that aside, 50/60Hz in regard to the power supply stopped to matter many decades ago. Japan even has both frequencies depending wether you're in the north or south of the country.

I love the idea you think a super special power supply is needed for this thing, how do you think we managed to run them here in Europe? Be a bit of a hard sell if it had to come with some sort of external 240 to 230 volt adapter :)

I don't think that way. 240v at 60 hz is more than a 20% tolerance. It could fry his switcher.

Did you not read the posts above or are you just trolling me now? UK/EU mains is 220 to 240 volts, usually closer to 240. If 240 volts could fry this thing, there would be none left in use since they would have been fried by our own 240 volt mains supplies years ago.

The adapter I linked to will be absolutely fine.

Chill out bucko. Find some local green or something. I don't like that troll word.

Also you linked an upconverter and this fellow lives in the us. He needs to down convert 230 to 115v

And voltage is not timing. 220-240v @60hz is similar to 275-300v @50hz because it is being fed in at a 20% faster rate. And most electronics may support 50/60 hz but it would say it on the label. This states that it is not 60hz compatible.

Most electronics have a 20% tolerance but it's not safe and you have no idea if there are going to be repercussions.

Have a good evening or whatever time in the U.K. Right now

You're confused. He needs an upconverter, to up the voltage from ~120V from his wall to ~240V at the output. The upconverter Bucko linked literally says on the page "Ideal for use of UK 220 - 240V three pin appliances in the US"

AC frequency is how often the signal swings between positive and negative, it doesn't affect the voltage.

Ya your right about that. Its confusing because it's upconverting from the wall to the unit. But downconverting from the unit to the wall.

And I'm not trolling. I'm being proven wrong and learning lessons.

But sorry if I offended you or came off as ignorant or pretentious bucko. That wasn't my intention.

Thank you for all your helpful replies guys!!

I´ll get the upconverter then :)

I think I found something similar in Amazon
