Best Playstation joystick
If I were to get a joystick to use for shmups on my ps2 (and dc via an adapter!) what would be the best one to look out for?
Am thinking sub £100 as a sensible price but could go higher.
Advice gratefully received.
Thanks

Personally, I love the old PS1 Namco arcade stick (compatible with PS2 also).

Re: Best Playstation joystick
Sure, but good luck finding one nowadays (there's also an even rarer HRAP2 SE version btw). The PS2 version of the virtua stick is equally good, but almost as difficult to find.speedlolita wrote:Hori Real Arcade Pro 2 SA.
Good alternatives to these are (personal order): the konami hyperstick (stock seimitsu LS-32), the spital sangyo programmable joystick (stock sanwa JLF) and the namco stick (different versions with knockoff parts of varying quality though).
Some of this are rare too, but they do pop up on european ebay platforms more often than the former (heck, there was a spital stick listing which ended yesterday: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Programmable- ... Sw44BYCecs )
Edit: forgot to add that there are the optical sticks by Ascii too. I love them for their precise lever and stock octagonal gate, but your mileage may vary.

Re: Best Playstation joystick
Thanks guys, think I'll try the namco arcade stick as they're 50 quid and seem readily available. Will keep a lookout for an hrap tho.
I wonder if anyone has heard of a ps1-saturn converter so I could use it on my saturn too?

One more question.
I have a custom built 360/pc usb joystick, is there any converter out there that would allow me to use it on my ps2 or dc?

Re: Best Playstation joystick
No, but you could buy a universal PCB with so called 'legacy' console support (along with the specific console cables):
https://paradisearcadeshop.com/fgc-cons ... hulhu.html
http://akishop-customs.com/PS360.html
It may be a good solution if you like the stick you already have, but look for review/impressions around first as I've read of compatibility issue with PS1. Also, depending on how the stick is built you may need to change some of its part to make it compatible with these PCBs. I don't have first-hand experience with multi-console PCBs as I've got a bunch of PS1-2 sticks (and adapters) that I like using.

My brain wasn't with me on this one, the hyperstick sports an LS-56 (which is better btw).Xer Xian wrote:Good alternatives to these are (personal order): the konami hyperstick (stock seimitsu LS-32)

or just keep your eye out for the orange Hori Real Arcade Pro 2 and swap out the buttons. this should put you in your price range. it's what I have and have been using for years, just recently got a ps3/4 adapter for it.

Agreed, no need to hunt down the special editions when the regular ones have buttons with quick disconnects (well, they were super-tight in my own, hardly 'quick' ). HRAP1 are equally good btw, I prefer the button layout on them (but the mirror top is very delicate).

Possibly a better price on the -> Saturn adapter:
http://www.tototek.com/store/index.php? ... 3eodrr23g3
I can also vouch that these adapters are good quality. I've tried a few of the versions and not noticed lag with any.

Re: Best Playstation joystick
I've ordered from the golden shop already I'll give it a good testing and let you know. Also picked up a namco fight stick - the black and yellow one for a good price so hopefully that will do me, if not there's a few of the konami sticks on ebay but they're more than twice the price and not in the uk so p+p and customs would be shite.

I have the Namco and I love it. Particularly because it's from the time before they started moving the stick too close to the buttons.

Re: Best Playstation joystick
I don't think there's a lot for the DC, adapter-wise, but I can recommend the official arcade stick (UK/Europe version at least, I seem to recall other regions got a raw deal on stock parts). It has a short throw and small deadzone, similar feel to the LS-32. Buttons have a springy feel, workable as they are but look easy enough to swap out.Guardians Knight wrote:One more question.

Re: Best Playstation joystick
I'm starting to think nothing but a padhack will do for playing on an actual PlayStation:
http://spiffyshoes.com/dualshockhack/
http://slagcoin.com/joystick/pcb_wiring ... ACTED_PCBS
I have a multi-console board in one of my sticks (TE Kitty), and while I love it with my PS2 (because the others don't seem to offer on-the-fly remapping or turbo support), I really can't use it with my original PlayStation. In fact I had to reflash the TE Kitty firmware to get it to work again after trying it with my PlayStation.
And let's not forget about those oddball titles on PS2 that absolutely require a Dual Shock! I remember having to use a Dual Shock 2 with Mega Man X8 and hopefully the padhack would let me play the game with a stick.

Re: Best Playstation joystick
Just a small correction. I understand Konami HyperStick is full Seitmitsu, both stick and buttons. The joystick is LS-56 with custom shorter shaft.Xer Xian wrote: Good alternatives to these are (personal order): the konami hyperstick (stock seimitsu LS-32)...

Re: Best Playstation joystick
Well after a dodgy seller experience on ebay where i was sent a broken namco arcade stick I've plumped for a konami hyperstick for twice the price but hopefully it'll be the daddy for my ps2 dc and sat shooters. Tried Border Down with the original dc pad - its horrific!

I love the dreamcast, but I can't stand the official controller as well. I'm sure you will like the hyperstick
