CRT Graveyard

Post by Endymion »

So it seems that a lot of CRTs that were carted off to "recycle" in the past 10-15 years, didn't actually get recycled.

A sad and frustrating article.

That's tragic. The solution: keep your crt's until they're actually dead and no longer have any hope of working. lol

Very sad indeed. Anyway, going by the author there's still an indian company that buys leaded glass to manufacture new CRTs. I could have sworn this tech was dead and buried long ago. So, anyone here can speak Hindi?

Edit: On a more serious note, the US have to man up and start dealing with this (God knows what's the state of affairs in Europe) - even China is cleaning up its mess: http://www.ban.org/news/2015/12/17/chin ... -overnight

You aren't going to find many Sony PVMs or Trinitrons in there, mostly cruddy old generic Wal-Mart specials that looked like shit the day they were manufactured and don't look any better now that they're in a landfill ..

I saw two nice Sony sets the last time I went to the landfill.

They don't let you touch dumped stuff. They don't negotiate. I was powerless.

They were doomed and comdemned. The guy said they always have a big pile on Saturday.

People are tossing CRTs out and they have no idea what they're doing. I seriously doubt I showed up at a unique moment.

Somehow, I doubt the previous owners worked very hard to keep those sets working.

Ugh, I know the average Joe has no use for a CRT but I wish they at least new to put them on Ebay or something.

I honestly think that had most people had their DVD players hooked up via component on good condition CRT's they wouldn't have switched to HD as fast.

Article said over 700 million CRT's sold since 1980, and that's only in America. Putting those on ebay might be flooding the market a little

but how many people actually want all those early 80s tvs today? most only come with 300 ohm screw terminals, or coaxial. no svideo no component, although a few of them DID have RGB, like some of the high end Sonys and NEC. And most are probably worn out now.

what i do wonder is how many tvs were saved here that had at least S-Video, because Gamers and others are still interested in them today.

As far as more people hooking up their DVD players through component back in the day, most people back in the day didnt even know to use composite. most were still using RF because it was what they had always used and it was "good enough".

We sure produce a lot of junk that only get's used for a few years then off to the dumps.
Even the newer tv's are worse to recycle than the older ones.

Yeah, the article mentions that. At least some of our CRT's are being recycled to make new ones in India.

By the way, since India still has CRT manufacturing facilities, what are the chances we could start a kickstarter to design high end RGB monitors to be produced on a few of their lines? 0.0001%?

Because we started a kickstarter where we hire a CRT engineer dude to come out of retirement to design an updated PVM which is then produced on one or two of the existing CRT production lines in India. No big deal all the infrastructure is there.

Market is old school gamers all over the world.

One of these days, I might throw a few duckets at one of the CRT's on alibaba...

But, I think I'll just be disappointed... In fact, I would be shocked if I wasn't disappointed... :(

Someday... Maybe... ...

Judging by the local Craigslist free section, lots of perfectly working, nice TVs get left at the curb. I often see them posted with pictures sitting on the curb, and the post says "garbage man comes tomorrow" and it's a week old. Or, there has been a major rain storm in the area since the TV was put on the curb.

Now, there are two opportunities out there for enterprising folks to give the stuff more life that can actually be profitable:
1. Pick up the TV and RGB mod it. If there are gamers in your area like there are in mine, the RGB mod will turn the TV into a $100+ seller.
2. If the TV has problems, at least take the remote. Original remotes sell for $15-20 on eBay.
