At this point Mozilla and Chrome are the software equivalent of the Kowloon Walled City.Pixel_Outlaw wrote:The day web pages became more program than page we slowly started down a terrible road of shoving everything into the browser.
Instead of JavaScript, the browser should have become a VM that accepts bytecodes from any language capable of generating them.
It is absurd to treat a scripting language as the smallest possible block of a web program.
It's bad design to have to contort other languages to output poorly structured JavaScript yet web hipsters LOVE to do it.
Now we're all locked into a 3 ring multimedia circus of engineering and standards fail.
It is absurd that I load a browser and it eats 666MB of RAM just sitting there.

The modern browser is the result of people moving in totally the wrong direction in an attempt for cross platform programming.
It's the biggest abomination conceptually I've seen in software engineering.

They've been for a long time, and there are no real alternatives. All the browsers compatible with modern websites are forks of the big ones using the same or similar technologies.orange808 wrote:Pixel_Outlaw wrote:At this point Mozilla and Chrome are the software equivalent of the Kowloon Walled City.
We need a new browser from scratch that doesn't only provide alternatives to javascript, sandboxing, but completely replaces html and css with something that's not a pain in the to work with unless you're making a site that looks like this.

What's up with everyone talking about Zionism lately? Not Israel, Zionism.
I made a joke in another forum about the Nazi getting punched and immediately had someone jump on me with, "So would you also laugh if a Zionist got punched in the face? Huh? Aren't Zionists just as bad as Nazis? Huh? Huh?"
Is this the new talking point going around the alt-right?

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

It's just another old af hate topic. 21st Century is the century of hate in all flavours, all directions.

Definitely hate. Dancing in the streets in celebration of children being murdered definitely generates hate.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Websites... I can hardly remember a time when they didn't annoy the hell out of me. I guess it's fair to say that back in the '90s it wasn't really the websites that annoyed me. The dial-up internet connection annoyed me, as did the crash-prone web browsers, my underpowered PCs, and slow web servers (just because your modem was capable of downloading at 3KB/sec was no guarantee that your download actually progressed at 3KB/sec (or at all)). Certainly, web developers of that time were fewer and less virulent than they are today. Since the mid '00s things have been getting much worse.
30% are unusable
40% are slow, glitchy, look like garbage, waste your time with nonsense, and make a zillion requests to google-analytics, twitter, and facebook
20% are relics of an earlier time that still work OK but have a fixed-width layout for an 800x600 screen
10% are not too bad
And then there's recaptcha. After I'm done clicking on the street signs I would like to shove them up a web developer's ass.

Don't blame web developers for captchas. Blame the idiots that click on anything and make spambots viable.

Blender's interface and controls.
Right-click to select items? Directional keys that are not used to move? Esoteric key combinations to do anything ? (e.g. Shift + Middle-mouse button click + mouse movement to move, WTF)
Millions of small obtuse icons with tooltips that tell you nothing about their function but display python commands I can't give a shit about? A broken zoom that sometimes decides to be super slow, or simply stop zooming on its target? No way to close an additionnal pane aside from fusing it with another one? (who needs a "X" button on the top-right corner anyway?) Blender has all of those, and more!
Whoever designed that thing deserves to get a thorough beating and/or a functional brain.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still glad there's a free 3D modelling tool such as this one on the market. But damn does it do its best at making me not want to use it...

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Blender's UI is probably the worst thing I've ever used. It is effectively non-discoverable beyond the uttermost basics. Experimentation doesn't really get you anywhere with it, you pretty much have to sit down and learn the key shortcuts and shit through watching videos, and once you finally get into that flow of just doing the specific key sequences without thinking, that's when you can actually get to work.
The only saving grace is that there's the ridiculously nice spacebar type-in context menu where if you just start typing something along the lines of what you want to do, it might pop up -- but there's a bunch of stuff that just doesn't seem to show up in it because it's got a weird name.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

@null1024 : I just can't understand why there is such a focus on keyboards shortcuts at the expense of basic dropdown menus on the top-left navbar like every other desktop program on the planet.
Are the developers married to keyboards? There is no other logical explanation for forcing the user to memorize those shortcuts instead of having both. There are many free tutorials out there so it can't even be scummy planned obfuscation to force users to pay for online courses and tutorials.
The shortcuts seem obviously very efficient but only after you remember them all, which is...far from efficient actually.
What baffles me the most is the brainwashed, Stockholm Syndrom-ridden community. Full of delusional loonies. The absolute nonsense that is right-click to select is apparently a controversial topic to them, and they keep saying that the "UI used to be bad before version X" even though it's still atrocious and has always been on a fundamental level. Either that, or they dodge the legitimate UI complaints by saying competitors are similar or that the Blender UI makes it "powerful". Even Apple fanboys are not as bad.
Anyway, thanks for the spacebar tip! That'll hopefully come in handy.

How come nobody has ring tones in TV shows anymore? It's all the generic vibration sound now.
