480i content, what's the best solution

Post by citrus3000psi »

I'm redoing my setup, so I want to get 480i content figured out.

I have a VP50Pro and OSSC.

Should I let the 50Pro handle the 480i? How does the 50Pro deal with 480i being passed through on the OSSC?

If you can "afford" the time (as in lag) that the VP50Pro takes to properly deinterlace 480i, then you're absolutely OK. 480i on the later DVDOs looks very nice, although it's a very different look from a Framemeister would present you with.

^ This is your answer. The DVDO is an amazing deinterlacer compared to the Framemeister. It is a night and day difference, but as Fudoh said the input latency is not the greatest if you want to play fighting games or similar. My DVDO iScan Duo is about 1-2 frames more delayed than the Framemeister.

Have fun!

I didn't want to imply that the DVDO is better than a Framemeister. Both are excellent, but they offer very different deinterlacing engines. While the DVDOs provide you a with a very smooth look, the FM delivers a result with defined pixels, very similar to a native 480p signal.

Has anybody tried putting a 480i signal via HDMI into the DVDO processors? Does it have the same results in terms of image/latency as going through the RGBHV?

The BNC RGBHV input does not accept 15khz sources.

480i via HDMI is standard and works flawlessly. It's what every DVD player or BD player with a native resolution setting does output (if you're not using SDI instead). This said, I've had problems with some 480i sources and I haven't tried 480i passthrough on the OSSC yet, so you really have to give it a try. Chances are good though that it'll work fine and look fabulous.

Sorry I mean the Component/RGBS 1 ports not the BNC

yes, same behaviour except that you're skipping the initial A/D conversion stage.
