Retexturing N64 Games (Not 56k Friendly)

Post by roushimsx »

I'm sure at least some of you are into N64 emulation and are aware of the badassity that is Rice's GPU plugin. His most recent version added the ability to dump textures and then reload higher res textures. Surprisingly, the community is responding with some nice results.

Here's some shots (before and after) of Mario 64 with the new textures and running in 1024x768. No other enhancements (FSAA, anisotropic filtering, HQ4x, whatever) is being done (as shown in the UI, which has yet to be retextured).

Color me impressed. The Zelda 64 project cleans up the UI quite a bit (along with adding a sexy new title screen), while the Super Smash Brothers project is adding spice to the character select screen and some individual stages.

Anyone care to take a crack at some of the sprites in Bangai-O? :)

Wow. Visually, it's like turning an N64 game into a Dreamcast game.

I sometimes forget N64 games even have textures since they are so neglible. This is pretty cool.

I dunno. The blurry clouds on the wall in the 2nd picture look better than the out-of-focus clouds IMO. And I prefer the fluffy trees in the 3rd picture over the hairy trees in the retextured version. Sure, it's more detailed, but it loses its simple charm, at least for my weird tastes.

Cool idea, but a lot of those textures just look like the original textures run through a couple Photoshop filters.
