Question about componenet YPBPR to HDMI Upscalers

Post by EpicDave »

Hello. I have the Vizio D40u-D1 4k UHDTV and the input lag on it is about 30 to 35 ms when using hdmi inputs 1, 2, 3, and 4 in game mode while 5 how ever in game mode is an astoundingly low 13.5 ms. That's the lowest i've seen for a consumer grade HDTV of any kind let alone a 4k tv. Anyway the reason I bring it up is because I want to play my ps2 and original xbox on this tv but of course in componenet since it has to deinterlace non 480p games and upscale to 4k the input lag is around the same or a bit higher than using hdmi 1 through 4. Now I have a portta component to HDMI converter which is a straight converter. It doesn't upscale. It does work well and the picture qaulity is slightly clearer with deeper blacks than using just component by it's self. How ever when using 480i or 480p in the HDMI input 5 for that low input lag you can not change the aspect ration or any picture settings at all since the tv tells you when you try that normal is the best mode for 480i-p so if you are playing a widescreen game tough shit its stuck in 4:3. so my main question is if I get one of those componenet to HDMI upscalers for example portta makes one just like my converter but it upscales to 1080p. Would it introduce any input lag on its own for upscaling and if so how much. I just need a quick and simple solution to upscaling the image of the ps2 and xbox so I can use HDMI 5 on my tv. Why the hell vizio locked out aspect ratio settings on HDMI 5 on this particular model is just beyond me but that 13ms of input lag is just too damn good to passup. I apologize if I rambled too much.

Congrats on that input lag score. It think that's the lowest I've seen on 40".

On my Sony 65" . More screen options are available when I press home>options rather just options on my remote. It is a sony thing but who knows if there located somewhere else?

oh no its just the way vizio did this model of tv. on all the other inputs , component, hdmi 1 2 3 and 4. no matter what the resolution 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p you can change the aspect ratio and screen size and position all that good stuff. On HDMI 5 the only input worth using because of its low input delay of 13ms no matter what the resolution, you can not change the aspect ratio or any other picture shape related setting I mentioned at all. They freagin locked them out on HDMI 5. I have no god damn idea why but it's stupid as hell. The only thing I know is that even tho all the resolutions I mentioned do work on HDMI 5 using anything lower than 1080p has the tv tell you hdmi 5 is meant to be used for UHD content aka 4k. Its a short message that pops up for a second then leaves. Now I have tried 4k content on HDMI 5 also with my PC, Xbox One S, and PS4 Pro and even when using 4k on HDMI 5 the aspect ratio and picture settings are still locked out. All the tv says if you try and change them is that normal is the best aspect ratio for this resolution on every resolution you try. 4:3 for 480i 480p content even if what you're watching or playing happens to be widescreen... and 16:9 for 720p up. This is why i'm considering buying a component to HDMI upscaler just so I can upscale ps2 and original xbox to 1080p so I'm not stuck in 4:3 in HDMI 5. All that damn trouble because vizio locked the settings out... I have literally never freagin seen a tv manufacturer do this. I've tried other 4k tv's and I haven't found another one which does this on a single Input. With all of that said tho I love this tv simply for that low input lag on HDMI 5 when you're using something like PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, PS4 pro, Xbox one or S and PC. You know anything that's HD because it feels soo good. Almost CRT like. For example playing megaman legacy collection on my PS4 pro on the vizio feels fantastic. The delay is imperceptible at least to me. I've tried it back to back with my nes hooked up to my trinitron and I can't really tell a difference. I can't say that with any other LCD LED display I've used in the past with the exception of a highend PC monitor.

I use a DVDO processor to handle 480p inputs. The Vizio's OEM 480p scaling is blurry and I was also less than satisfied with the limited options.

Also, my Vizio D 2016 refuses to accept 480i and 240p on the high speed HDMI port. 1080i shows an error message and a glitched output. In my experience, HDMI 5 only accepts progressive inputs from 480p and up. 720p and 1080p look great on the display, though.

Same here. I leave my DVDO hooked permanently to hdmi port 5. And I use the passthrough option if I don't want the DVDO to do any processing. Wish they put a Passthrough button the remote though.

That's weird cause my vizio d40u d1 does support 480i through hdmi. When i connected the ps2 to hdmi 5 using my portta componenet to hdmi converter it showed a picture just fine with 480i. the ps2 dashboard for instance is 480i. Honestly I wouldnt even have a problem if hdmi 5 would just let me change the aspect ratio.. thats the only reason I want an upscaler so I can have it fill the screen.

I'll have to try it again.

I cannot stop thinking about your tv. I can't believe how inexpensive these are for their lag ratings.

A framemeiser will solve your problems but good look paying rent that month. Also it adds lag sometime depending on your interger scaler.

Mine 480p sucks and is laggy when my output is reading 17ms on a bodnar.

Holy cow that tvs a great price

I know right? I bought this tv for its input lag rating on hdmi 5 alone. 4k was just a bonus. When I first read the review of it on rtings.com I was like.. 13?! That has to a damn typo... but nope! lol. Anyway as for the frame meister? my god Id love one I just can't afford to shell out 350 bucks right now.

They are on back order production. Expect to pay more like 460-500.

I walked past a bunch of them last night at Wal Mart. They're out there.

If you want one right now sure, but if you can wait a little Solaris Japan still has preorders for less than 350.
