Best cheap shmup pcbs?

Post by tzakiel »

What is your favorite shmup pcb that is under a couple hundred bucks? I'm getting a blast city soon, and as much as I would like to buy a ketsui and mushihime I think my wife would take a sledge to my cab if I spent $400+ Or even $1000+ on one game.

I plan to run 15khz mame for the most part but would love to get some decent vertical Jamma boards as well.

Psikyo or Seibu boards are usually pretty reasonable, I think.

If you buy something expensive which holds its value well, your wife will destroy something expensive which holds its value well? I get what you're saying though. Agreed on Psikyo and Seibu. Raiden 1 and II are cheap, and S1945II is an incredibly good game for cheap.

"B tier" Konami boards like the Thunder Cross or Parodius games are pretty affordable. No idea why Gradius cost so much more than Parodius when the latter are obviously much better games ;)

In general the most common shmup boards I've seen around here would probably be the Raiden and Raiden fighers games (with Raiden DX being a possible exception, but even that one I don't think is too uncommon.) It looks like some of the NeoGeo MVS stuff can be had for under $200 as well (I found several Blazing Star cartridges under $200 when I looked, for example.)

A couple of my cheapest paid arcade Jamma PCBs would be a mere $20.00 for an Seibu SP1 cartridge of Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. and $75.00 for a NOS Semicom's Wyvern Wings: Space Opera Jamma conversion kit (both off of eBay over the years).

I recall one lucky shmupper scored a Cave ESP.ra.de. PCB for the insane price of $75.00 many moons ago. Another fellow shmupper sold a Seibu SP1 cart of VP1-USA for $50.00 here on the Trading Section -- you might get lucky & nab such a highly-desired arcade shmup PCBs for mere pennies on the dollar (you just gotta be at the right place at the right time to score such cheap-ass PCB deals).

Back in the early 2000s era, it was possible to buy a NOS Korean region Raizing/8ing produced Armed Police Batrider Jamma conversion kit for $150.00. Of course, those days of lore are long gone.

I hope we're not married to the same woman , cause it sounds like my wife. Lol.

New Zealand is an oasis of cheap shooters pcbs. Granted it does not have an extensive range, but the price more than makes up for it.

As previously mentioned, Raiden1 and Strikers1945 (i prefer part1) are some of the best for under $100ea.

19XX war against destiny and Dimahoo (my personal all time favorite) are both great but for CPS2 you'll need an A-board.

Not sure how common it is necessarily, but I got a brand new unused Wyvern Wings PCB for like $60 or something a couple years back from a batch someone had on eBay, think a couple other folks here got in on that too. Not sure what the going price would be for it if it pops up somewhere else for sale now, but it actually is not a bad game imo, its basically a Psikyo ripoff for the most part.

Thanks again. Where is the best place to buy these for a reasonable price? I set up Buyee for yahoo japan auctions but the shipping and fees are kinda high.

Here's a Ebay auction for a Australian region Seibu Kaihatsu SP1 cart of Raiden Fighters + SP1 motherboard on the cheap: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Raiden-Fighters ... SwaB5Xj0qu

As you can see on the second screenshot of the Raiden Fighters main title screen, the Australia region info is displayed for your viewing pleasure + the fact that it's running on a Dynamo upright cab along with a photocopied Fabtek licensee issued Raiden Fighters instruction manual (hence the cheaper pricepoint, indeed -- unless if you're trying to score a USA or JPN region SP1 RF cart, the asking price will definitely be higher, of course -- it's a given in this day of age). The eBay seller hasn't disclosed that it's an AUS region SP1 RF cart but it's really easy to see that it is in this particular eBay arcade PCB auction listing.

Another eBay auction for a cheap-ass USA region SP1 motherboard + SP1 cart of RF (with Fabtek licensee info displayed on the main title screen): http://www.ebay.com/itm/RAIDEN-FIGHTERS ... SwQjZXQc0N

A typical Fabtek licensee released Raiden Fighters PCB kit for the American arcade market would include a full-sized Raiden Fighters marquee (that could be backlit if so desired to attract/draw more attention) + the obligatory Seibu Kaihatsu RF arcade artwork in proper English + manual & SP1 factory shipping box -- trying to get something like this nowadays, is a rarity these days (as most arcade operators/owners would toss such arcade paperworks in the trash after swapping out the ol' RF cart for another Jamma PCB to earn in those precious quarters/tokens/yen/pence back in the mid-to-late 1990s on their street routes or local arcades). Those were the days of arcade gaming lore.

Is the cheapest that I've personally seen for a combo SP1 motherboard + SP1 cart deal in a long time, especially nowadays.

In another Seibu Kaihatsu SP1 related thread, a fellow shmupper mentions that the country region of said SP1 motherboard can changed if necessary/desired (thus making owning multiple SP1 motherboards of various countries moot or rather unnecessary) so you can play your favorite SP1 carts. How cool is that? That's another cool topic worth visiting.

seconded. I picked this up for under $50 a few months ago and have been enjoying the hell out of it. It's an absolute must for fans of Toaplan/Seibu Kaihatsu.

Guardian Storm is on the low end of mediocre IMO.

Most Psikyo games are good and cheap, Raiden 1, 2, and DX are very good and cheap.
