I was tempted to try to do the series in order (well, as much as the localized games allow), but figured I'd probably be best off with the more developed battle system of the later sub-series, since I can usually overlook a dumb plot or other annoyances if the mechanics are well-implemented enough; to some degree this is still true here, but at several dozen hours in the aforementioned irritants are really starting to grate, and the plot is easily the least irksome of the bunch.

Downloading from there gives you the GOG-4 version. Just install it over your existing one.

Now if your proficiency with a weapon is <100%, you are able to use its skill as long as it's your current equipped one.

Two big issues remain though. There still is some framerate stuttering, and there's one mistake with the Red Slimes. When they blow up before dying, they should only damage what is nearby. As it is now, EVERYTHING in the room will be damaged. It doesn't matter how far away you get from the Red Slimes. You get hit.
I've encountered a bug which seems to make it impossible to use certain skills/items or any magic. The bottom portion of the menu simply does not respond to mouse clicks.

EDIT: well, I found that the menu does work properly in either of the shops or church, so I can select skills/magic there at least

EDIT2: this game works in Windows 2000

Never played browser game "Trails of Dawn", but it's apparently coming to Vita.

In personal news, I bought Xanadu Next on GOG when it came out, but got an error message when I tried to start it; since then it's been updated once, and now I get a different error message. :? Probably ought to just refund the thing...

Ys 8 hitting PS4 in Japan in May, and, yes, will actually have some enhancements.

Cold Steel III hitting next fall sometime, and this one'll be a PS4 exclusive.

This'll be what I upgrade to PS4 for (in 2018  ).

Currently about 100 hours into CSII.

Great news about Zero no Kiseki's fan translation. Some experts from the falcom community will be helping with the project. Thank god, the google translated scripts released so far were terrible.

Outta curiosity, did they manage to ditch the "regular enemies are a cakewalk, then throw a boss at you who overwhelms you with a specific status ailment unless you've specifically prepared for it (occasionally in an area you can't freaking leave)" shenanigans? I keep putting off going back to finish CS1 because of this...

EDIT: A bit more info here and here.

You can still get fucked when going blind into a boss encounter that you aren't equipped for, so saving regularly (especially before bosses) and having some of each of the status resistant accessories is a must. I will say that both games are harder early on when you're underpowered, especially CS1 where most characters don't have S-breaks yet

If I'm getting anihilated by a status ailment on a new boss I usually just let myself get killed and start again from the title screen.

Which boss did you get stuck on?

The grim reaper-ish one in the castle in whats-her-face's hometown, it summons a whole bunch of lackeys and all of them swamp you with sleep/nightmare effects. Happened to me a few times previously, but in this case once you enter the castle you're not allowed to leave it 'til you beat it; I'm honestly afraid to check my inventory and see if I have enough anti-sleep accessories lying around, because if I don't I basically might as well delete my save file. Extremely bush league coming from a veteran developer like Falcom.

Yeah, I remember that one was quite tough.

Don't forget to use your S-breaks to inflict big damage to the boss and kill all the bosses underlings as well. Laura with her default master quartz should start each battle with strength +50% (if maxed out, 25% otherwise), so use her S-break first and give her the Domination quartz if you've got it (can't remember when you get it in CSI).

One thing I can tell you is that replenishing CP is easier in CSII (staying at inns replenishes either 100 or 200, unlike the first game). Rean's master quartz aslo gives him CP each turn (not just Rean's turns) and there's a few accessories that do the same.

So yeah, get your equips optimised as much as possible then hammer the boss with S-breaks.

Has anyone figured out what format the Xanadu Next OST is? There are a bunch of files with the extension .DEC which actually have a .WAV header. However the audio format TwoCC specifies 1 (uncompressed PCM) but the data does not decode properly as such. I thought it might be Vorbis ACM but that didn't work either.

Wow. Good to hear. I wouldn't doubt if it went gold in about another 3 months.

BTW, Ys Celceta and Ys Seven are on Steam Greenlight. So are Ao & Zero no Kiseki. XSEED isn't the publisher though- it's Joyoland. Hopefully they remove the SecuROM DRM and just go with Steam's own, and then partner up with XSEED to use the Celceta/Seven translations.

And also for Celceta, they need to bring over the enhancements that are added in the unofficial English translation patch that was made for the Chinese PC version. This not only puts it in English but also restores light/shadow effects (take the cloud shadows on Beast Party Plains that you see on the Vita version, for one) while raising the target frame rate to 60.

Great, always wondered about Celceta, but don't own, or wish to own, a Vita.

I'll vote "not interested" for both Ys games.

Seven and Memories of Celceta are like gigantic tubs of plain yogurt. For the first spoonfuls, you might think this stuff isn't bad, just not great like the flavored kinds you really liked. Yet there's so much of it that getting through the whole thing is a sickening experience. You reach a point where you hate it; the thought of eating more makes your stomach churn.

I'll vote "yes" for both when I get home. Ys Seven is fun, aside from the endgame material grind for the characters you weren't using for the previous 99% of the game. Haven't played Celceta, but want to. More Falcom on Steam is always welcome.

It's been one year since I've played and finished Trails in the Sky FC. I'm wondering if I'm waiting too long to play the second one, I loved the first... Don't know if I'll play it again before starting the second, no I won't do it, it's too lenghty

A year isn't too bad, that's about what jp fans had to wait in between the original releases anyway. If you remember it then it's probably fine.

So does this mean that EX+ and original are coming to PC at separate times, and I should wait for EX+? Or only one of them is coming to PC?

It would appear that only Ex+ will be on PC.

On the final chapter of the first Trails in the Sky now, really liking it as I've gone through it more.

What exactly carries over to SC if you have a savefile? Debating on whether I want to get the second one on Steam or PSN, playing on Steam right now, but kinda would like to have it portable on my Vita, but don't want to miss out on extras that might carry over.

The eX+ versions of Tokyo Xanadu for PC & PS4 are still a long time coming. Try Fall (Amazon says 11/24 for the PS4). Damn.
Quite a hard wait, but at least there's the Vita version this summer (6/30).

Carries the Bracer Rank and points, and Estelle's Level (lower than 40).

AFAIK Xseed is working only on the PC version.
