I've found the KILLER APP that will have the Nintendo Switch blowing Sony and Microsoft out of the water!

Oh dear, I hope there won't be a modding community for that game...

This is pretty much the only thing that got me interested in the system. The pixel mode looks great, I wasn't a fan of the HDR visual style. I hope that they won't make silly changes like they did with HDR. Ultimately, whether or not I'm going to get a Switch for this game depends entirely on whether or not there are decent fight sticks available and whether or not the online is good.

Other than Ultra SF2, the only other games that got me somewhat interested in the system are the new SMT game and Project Octopath Traveler but I need to see more of those two games.
It may be on the Switch to start, but does really not see it eventually migrating to the ps4?
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

From what I've been told by folks at Capcom, Nintendo approached them to make it, so I doubt it would go to PS4.

Am I the only one who things the new Ultra Street Fighter II HD graphics look terrible?

Also, never would have thought back in the mid to late 90s that SFII would still be receiving updates.

So, other than people knowing this thing exists, this time around....what is better about this launch than the Wii U launch?

I'm seeing a very gimmicky system, with few games. Lots of promises, but I don't trust Nintendo at all. Well, that may be a bit harsh...if sales aren't great, 3rd party devs will just abandon it. I don't blame them. But still...

Well it's not being mistaken for a Wii add-on by anyone. The console concept is also much less stupid.

* Portable
* More than 1 RPG over the lifetime of the console
* Motherfuckin' Zelda

If you don't like Nintendo games and don't like RPGs, why the hell would you care about Nintendo consoles? Just get a PC. Let the PSX peasants beta test our games for us first.

Is a PSX even really a console anymore if you have to INSTALL your freaking games? Sad!

True it's the first time I see so many RPGs announced at launch, especially on a Nintendo machine.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo announced Bayonetta 2 and The Wonderful 101 before the Wii U came out, so there's nothing better about this launch for me. Even looking at the big picture, there's very little for anyone to look forward to. There's Zelda (also on the Wii U), a $60 Mario Kart 8 port, and then they have Splatoon, Xenoblade, and Mario for the rest of the year. Nintendo's quite bold to go with the nogaems strategy.

That's what I was thinking. I was like "2 Platinum games..ugh..I'm gonna have to get it!". But with this....nah.

Agreed (though I got mine as a gift). I'm a bit skeptical of Switch. I don't like how the stock controllers have no digital dpad or stick. They also bare a resemblance to those cheap android controllers, though I'm sure the Switch controllers are better made.

I'll be looking at picking one up some time next year when it has more games, the price has gone down, and the accessories aren't in "We're competing with the scalpers directly" territory.

Prices here are ridiculous.
470$ for the console after April.
72$ for games.
Gotta love dem taxes.

I am really having issues with the idea of being handed half a controller. Where's my second analogue stick? Also, did I miss them or does it not have any proper triggers?

You're supposed to accept it as a reasonable facsimile of a NES/SNES controller where the directional pad has been replaced with an analogue stick.
Ji-L87 wrote:Where's my second analogue stick?
On the other "half" of course. Greedy people who need two analogue sticks use the Joy-Con Grip. Note that the Joy-Con Charging Grip is sold as a separate accessory.
Ji-L87 wrote:Also, did I miss them or does it not have any proper triggers?
There are plenty of buttons - though I suspect none of them meet your expectation of "proper triggers" (ZL and ZR are used as triggers when the grip is used - otherwise there are SL and SR for detached operation):

Though many of the buttons don't seem to be placed for comfortable play - triggering the many complaints of the need to buy a Switch Pro Controller, despite the fact that a Joy-Con Non-Charging Grip ships with the base launch package.

The smart phone app that we’re creating, that will be part of our online service, we believe is going to be a very compelling part of the overall proposition because that’s how you’ll voice chat, that’s how you’ll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby. We also think it’s a very elegant solution because if you’ve taken your switch on the go, you’ve put yourself in a hotspot, you’re looking at get a quick match of Mario Kart in, to whip out some sort of bulky, gamer headset is a bit of a challenge.

So we think we’ve got an elegant solution. That’s a very specific answer to your question.

Reminds me of the excuse for why the smaller model New 3DS was not initially released in the US. Reggie said something about having more variety that made very little sense.

Nintendo can't handle the fact the Internet is a thing, where nowadays people know everything you do. If they could, they would hide the release of the non-XL N3DS model from gaijin eyes. Reggie does what he's told, even if it makes no fucking sense at all.

Use mobile phones for voice communication? What is this, 2004?

A smartphone companion app for a portable device? Way to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

It is clear that you don't like it (which is fine) but it isn't very illuminating as to why from Nintendo's perspective it's "an elegant solution".
TransatlanticFoe wrote:Use mobile phones for voice communication? What is this, 2004?
I don't see any allusion to using "voice communication", it's likely that voice chat will be transmitted via data just like it is for PSN/Xbox Live.
BryanM wrote:Does it not have a microphone?
Interesting question. None of the diagrams I have come across identify one but the tablet does have a 3.5 mm audio connector which could hypothetically take a 4 conductor plug for microphone support - but that would only make sense if the same functionality existed on the Switch Pro Controller. Given that for example the Sony DS4 supports it, people will be inclined to assume the same about the Switch Pro Controller (but you know what they say about assumptions).

Aside: there is a rumor brewing that Switch Pro Controllers may not be available for launch.

But I don't think this is about the "missing microphone".
Nintendo (via Reggie Fils-Aimé) wrote:..., you've put yourself in a hotspot ...
I see this as a CYA statement. I was surprised how data-hungry Super Mario Run turned out to be. Nintendo must be assuming that fans are data-savy, have generous cellular data plans or very deep pockets.

Ultimately it comes down to the Switch needing to be tethered to a smartphone for access to cellular data for away-from-home-operation in the absence of free, reliable Wi-Fi - i.e. there typically is a smartphone present during away-from-home-operation of the Switch.
  • The idea probably started innocently enough as using the smartphone that is already there for an "admin console" for the current Nintendo Online Service (NOS) session.
  • Another side benefit is that games no longer have to separately implement the online multiplayer UI because that is now delegated to the "admin console". The game simply gets the user selections from the NOS. Essentially the game "outsources" the online multiplayer UI - thus the game becomes less "monolithic" and more "distributed".
  • Being "distributed" an opportunity opens up to "steal" CPU cycles and other resources on your smartphone. For example, the Switch doesn't have to power the A/D and D/A conversion for voice chat saving it's own battery while shortening your smartphone's battery life.
  • The implementation of this "admin console" may already be the thin edge of the wedge for a Second Screen Service (SSS).
  • Games could use SSS to implement optional inventory or map apps much like they would use the second screen on a DS/3DS.
  • Hypothetically SSS could be implemented using NFC supported by most modern smartphones. The problem is that the Switch's NFC functionality is in the controller. That would imply that the controller would have to relay communication between the tablet and the smartphone which would negatively impact controller battery life.
  • Because of that Nintendo may choose to implement SSS only via NOS. This could translate to SSS apps and functionality only being available to paying NOS subscribers.
FYI: An unusually well reasoned perspective on the Nintendo Switch as a product: YongYea: Nintendo Switch - The Good & The Bad So Far
