Dreamcast VGA to Super Emotia to CRT TV - help needed

Post by metoo3 »

Dear all,

my first post is nothing but questions, sorry for that.

I have a retro gaming system with several PAL Dreamcasts and B&O MX7000 CRT TV.

I did some testing between 480i and 240p, switched back and forth but the MX7000 internal de-interlacing seems not for me.
240P picture is dark, pixelated and fonts produce a ghosting type of image. Although the picture is wobbling a lot more than 480i.

However I just pulled the trigger on a brand new Extron Super Emotia which should arrive in a few days.

At this moment my connection is like:
DC -> Toro DC Box -> MX7000 (RGB Scart)

Improvement plan:
Video: DC -> Toro DC Box (VGA) -> (VGA) Super Emotia (BNC RGBs) -> (VGA) UMSA (RGB Scart) -> (RGB Scart 240p) MX7000
Audio: DC -> Toro DC Box (RCA) -> (RCA) UMSA -> (RGB Scart 240p) MX7000

Is this setup reasonable and would work from technical point of view?

I understand the Super Emotia's RGBs provides a csync but does the UMSA's VGA accept csync on VGA?

Majority of cables are 5X BNC (HVsync) to VGA where could I buy a matching 4X BNC (csync) to VGA?

Does the Super Emotia's RGBs BNC output 15khz? Or will it be converted by the UMSA?

Please feel free to share any other ideas.

Many thanks in advance.

Your setup will work fine. Just grab an regular "VGA to 5 BNC" cable and just plug RGB+H Sync, leaving the V sync unpluged.
Emotia will output 240p RGBs, the same the UMSA will output to your Scart TV, but with the 5v needed, if you have some Phillips CM8833 monitor for example, you won't need the UMSA at all, but for your B&O you will need it .

Happy gaming

Many thanks for your advice.

Let's see if this would increase picture quality at all.
If not I may have to think about a PVM/BVM, however quite hard to find, expensive and rather small.

You don't need to go for a PVM/BVM, grab an old Sony Trinitron from the 90's. They're much better than the B&O. But which Dreamcast games do you want to play in 240p? Most of the titles will work great in 480p in a CRT VGA monitor with the VGA box.

I simply don't habe a VGA Crt monitor and I don't like their design too much.
So I just pulled the trigger on the Extron because it's brand new and I got it for a reasonable price. Maybe it's useful for other 16 & 8 bit Sega consoles I'm looking for...
Beside technical I do like the B&O for its design. From what I read it seems to be the best compromise between picture quality and design.
