Nothing wrong with Raspberry or Retropie in concept - I can fit the thing on my pocket - but the Retropie setup configuration is a fucking nightmare. I have had so much trouble with controller configs and hotkey setup I'm about ready to ditch it for Recalbox.

Absolutely this. I was about to make the same response to the post before yours, but I'm glad to see I'm not alone.emphatic wrote:When someone you're with thinks of a funny viral youtube video out of the blue when you're in conversation about something only slightly related to that video, locks it up on their phone and even though you try to make them understand you'd rather keep the conversation going than watch the video, starts it and makes you watch it on their phone. It's not near funny enough to be the viral sensation they claim it to be and when you tell them you don't get what's so funny, they say "you have to watch it 'til the end". Spoiler: there's no silver lining to the video at the end, it's just over.
I don't mind being shown funny or cool videos, in fact I will even enjoy it, but it so often goes without situational awareness. I VERY rarely feel like watching anything that's more than a minute long unless I'm at my own sitting with my computer, and in almost any social situation it's just very distracting.
More than anything though, I hate having to be polite and pretend that I'm entertained by a video that I don't find the least bit funny. But I will do it, because I don't want to be the guy who says "Not my thing" and walk out of the room.
I do appreciate though, that I do have some relationships that are solid enough for me to be able to say when I don't enjoy "their" thing without anyone getting offended.
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
It's like some people just can't tell when someone's turned off by the idea of staring at a video for several minutes or if this even actively annoy all the other people in the same room. Like when people blast videos or music off their phones in say, a Hotel's breakfast buffet area, ignoring the angry stares from all around.

Don't get me wrong - the Pi is wonderful as a cheap project machine, and I'm all for affordable ways to teach computing and whatnot. It's just that everything about the device points to it being a decidedly mediocre choice for emulation.Skykid wrote:Nothing wrong with Raspberry or Retropie in concept - I can fit the thing on my pocket - but the Retropie setup configuration is a fucking nightmare. Can it least run anything not associated with libretro? I understand its OS is a form of Debian. What I'm seeing on the help forums isn't too promising:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 8&t=112248
Agree. Retroarch is so much easier to use/configure.Use RetroArch + whatever core you need. Don't use standalone emulators on the Pi, they generally suck except for Mame4all, PiFBA and Atari800.
For all the other systems, it's RetroArch ONLY.
There is a Nestopia core for libretro/RetroArch. There's also an FCE core. Use that. Avoid any other solution. Save time and get the best results.

Well in terms of emulation quality? Seems superb from what I played (not much because of the idiotic controller config) and there's a broad range of systems on there. It does stuff outside of Retroarch too, like ports of Streets of Rage Remake and Dreamcast emulation (which I've sent running ok in certain YT vids.)
But Retroarch is fine anyway, hidden behind the emulationstation frontend. Of all emulation it's probably the most advanced option for collecting systems under one roof. If you're super fussy about tweaking performance then maybe it's not suitable, but I have no probs with it.

Yup. Contacted them, we'll see.
The thing looks extremely simple at first but it's really full of semi-hidden rules and unintuitive shit. Still nice local publicity when it works.
Setting up a decent website or a facebook page is supposed to be significantly more work, but I've never seen something as stupid as that google activation system that blocks you right from the start for no understandable reason.
Maybe they've had lots of usurpation issues in the past, dunno, but they need to work on it.

It's not, it's that thing to shove your business into the local search, you see it appear on the right showing the location on Maps, business hours, contact info, pictures, customer ratings etc. You can also manage AdWords for it. Maybe it's still called differently in Germany, or part of something else like G+ ?

OOh, I've never seen that before. Is it new? Haven't used google at home in a while and have probably never used to look for a local store at all.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
On a basic level, there's not much actually wrong with RetroArch -- it's a set of cross-platform APIs that make it damn easy to get an emulator running on a new platform. You port your emulator to a libretro core once [assuming you don't have processor specific assembly/JIT bits in there] and you can rebuild it with zero effort for every platform RA runs on, which is a lot.Skykid wrote:Well in terms of emulation quality? but RetroArch's configuration system is one of the worst things I've ever encountered, full stop and it abstracts a few things too much [like controller layouts]

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Suffice to say I'm not a fan of RetroArch's approach. I get the impression that it's tailor-made for people who don't care about accuracy or preservation and would rather PC MASTER RACE the shit out of their fifty gazillion ROMs (which they blast through with savestates since they don't actually have time to play them - lives are sooooo obsolete guys!).
For example... higan attempts to match the refresh rates of the systems it emulates to the extent that there is no longer an option to Vsync. RetroArch goes the other route by allowing the user to break timing to eliminate screen tearing, which wouldn't be a big deal if they didn't treat it as this uber awesome perfection master evar.
RetroArch's other achievements include:
- The Retropad. Who asked for this?
- A hack of bsnes that might as well not be bsnes
- Mednafen with upscaling crammed in, something the original developer was against doing in the first place
- A port of mednafen's pce_fast core, but not the pce_accurate core
- RetroAchievements, which are exactly what they sound like
- Emulation of systems with keyboards despite the entire program being (terribly) built around use with a gamepad. Have fun
- Perhaps the most infamous one of all, an insistence on wanting to be some fancy libretro showcase thingy rather than just an emulator, resulting in an ungodly smorgasbord of features catered to users with an interface that makes even MAME look friendly
I also feel that the stupid amount of Internet fame RetroArch is getting, especially with all this overrated "Raspberry Pi as an emulation box" nonsense, is rather harmful to the direction in which emulation is heading, especially with the kinds of exciting projects on the horizon. Mesen, which passes almost every test ROM out there and supports mappers not even puNES supports; BlastEm, a Mega Drive emulator that benefits from Exodus' accuracy-focused approach while remaining useful; redream, the first new Dreamcast emulator in far too long; Mednafen's recently unveiled Saturn core; etc., etc. To say nothing of what might result from the research being done in the pursuit for more accurate Game Boy emulation. If psxact ever gets off the ground... well, there's that too.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Retroarch's configuration seems to have been designed with smart phones and iOS in mind, only it's still awkward on cell phones too. It also took awhile for an obvious input error to be fixed on the Android retroarch (the input error rendered games with simultaneous inputs unplayable when using a bluetooth pad). Some cores break in updates from time to time too. I still like it despite this, especially since it has some of the better Android emulators, but it's still rough around the edges.

am I alone in hating hbomberguy?
hbomberguy is this youtube asshole who makes a lot of "measured response" videos where he puts words in people's mouths and laughs at things they didn't say, but people love him because he attacks antifeminists and anti-sjws so they don't even care that he attacks their "lies" with lies of his own. Its just so stupid.

I've only seen his fallout3 rant, it was alright, a lot of good points. Goes overboard in places but that seems to come with the territory.
Re: am I alone in hating hbomberguy?
You can avoid Youtube personalities pretty easily. There's really no reason to hate any of them.
Re: am I alone in hating hbomberguy?
Though it would have probably been a good idea for ag99 to take a strategic break before returning with a new account, I wouldn't have expected him to do that either.
Re: am I alone in hating hbomberguy?
There are literally millions of assholes out there on the internet. It'd be a lot more productive to rub one out and enjoy some videogames than get mad about them, so that's what I do.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
The absurd incompetence of our main electricity provider.
The thing has been public sector as far as I remember up until recently and all was mostly okay, when they decided to make it mostly private (about 2/3 of it private capital) and since then it has been a disaster: opacity on the pricing/rates, incomprehensible irregular inflated invoices and account management, broken website and mailing system, uneffective customer service, endless problems, shit shit shit.
What's even more infuriating is that since our electric power industry has been in crisis, losing billions, and because it's still partially public, our gov of course took the decision to recapitalize it, and of course with our tax money.
All began to go down the tubes because that stupid EPR power plant project which is basically a money pit, technically flawed, something we don't even need and that's dragging the whole sector to disater.
Well, I guess as long as they can waste our tax money on that shit they'll manage to patch things up, more or less.
But I'm waiting - in fear - for the day they won't be able to do that anymore and hand over the entire business to the private sector, which doesn't give a flying fuck about safety.
The thing is, they've found the manufacturing process of the most crucial parts of many of our reactors: the vessels, to be flawed, the results known, and hidden away under piles of documentation for decades.
The very vessel of our flagship money pit EPR itself is flawed, and they've found out only after installing it, this is what revealed the whole case.
Now of course they're trying everything to quash criticizm and cover up the whole scandal under semantics and chains of reports, until we all forget that we're surrounded with badly managed, bankrupt, unsafe power plants.

unreliable CDN systems
Nothing like browsing along, seeing something interesting, and then oops: "I'm being served from image server 5 and thus I'm either going to time out on you or be really fucking slow, have fun with that!"
there's probably a programmatic way to fix this by just making it so that all URLs leading to the unreliable server are replaced [eg, is5.somesite.net/images/filename_timestamp.png becomes is2.somesite.net/images/filename_timestamp.png]
haven't made an actual attempt, but I did try doing a document.body.innerHTML = document.body.innerHTML.replace('is5.somesite.net', 'is2.somesite.net') and nothing seemed to happen, probably because it's looking for whole words, or maybe it's not replacing everything? I don't really use JS.

The flu. Wtf.
Damn, and I though I'd been careful. First I've caught since I was a kid as far as I remember.
Definitely nastier than your average cold, but for the moment not as painful as many rhinitis I've had.
And it's 0°C outside, windy, so I'm locked, kind of the most annoying aspect of it.
