Invader GBA

Post by BrianC »

I heard some good things about this game, but I honestly don't know too much about it. Telling from the description, it sounds like it borrows a bit from Compiles games. There is no info on this game in Xenocide Files (it's not even listed) or gamefaqs (I thought there used to be a couple reviews there, but they are gone now). May I please have some info on this game? Does it have tough bosses? Is it true that it's hard? How does it compare to other shooters on the GBA?

Unfortunately I buyed it....it's really a sh*t game......give yourself a favour and stay away from this one.
Tha game concept is good but graphics has a really poor framerate so the gameplay is almost a nightmare.

The only good shmupS on GBA in my opinion are:
Gradius Galaxies
Steel Empire

What makes the gameplay a nightmare? Is it as choppy as Raiden Trad on SNES?

I tried the game for a few seconds on a rom and it didn't seem choppy. At least not enough to interfere with gameplay. The gameplay seemed pretty good from what I played. More info please?

Dave4Shumps, you used to own the game, right? Would you please tell me a bit about Invader GBA? Does it get cheap?

The gimmick of the game just wasn't very well thought out. It's interesting that you can buy stuff, but you have to pause while you're in the middle of a stage to do so. The half of the powerups were really good, while the other half were completely useless. Collecting the coins that allowed you to buy stuff is also a pain in the ass because they're so hard to see and are easily confused with bullets.

The gameplay wasn't very refined either. More point-blank potshots than even most Psikyo games, even from popcorn enemies, and plenty of enemies coming from behind.

ahh. I think I'll avoid. I don't like that pausing the game to buy powerups thing. I think Aero Star might be my next GB shmup. I like the idea of a ship that can jump.

The Good:

-AWESOME music, especially some of the later stages.
-graphic style is pretty good. No choppiness from the hours I've spent playing.
-Two player simultaneous mode if two players have the game and a link cable.

The Bad:

- hori-verts simply don't work on the GBA. Things get VERY cramped later on and its easy to crash into other ships, nevermind bullets. Also, your hitbox is fairly large.

- Beating the game is simply a matter of using bombs properly. If you use a bomb at the correct time, you'll kill a ton of enemies, thus enabling you to buy more bombs, repeat.

-Some weapons flat out suck.

Overall, its pretty mediocre by western shmup standards.

It's not that hori-verts don't work, it's either that these new developers don't program them right, or that the screen of the GBA makes it seem like there is not much space when there really is quite a bit (and I vote more for the latter, especially for Iridion II). I happen to like Iridion II quite a bit, though. Also from what I played, the ship in Invader is smaller than the one in Iridion II and the hitbox didn't seem THAT large. I have the Famicom Minis of Xevious and Twinbee and they are both extremely playable and fun. The GBA Galaga port in Namco Museum, the Centipede port in Atari Anniversiary Advance, and the Time Pilot port in Konami Arcade Advance are very good too.

From the info I'm given, Invader does sound like a mediocore game, but some of the info seems to contradict what I played of the game. Now I'm even more confused than when I first posted this topic.

I'm not sure how some people here are judging the game, I mean by console standards, yea Invader is pretty sub-par, but in comparing it to other portable shmups, it's above average and easily the best on GBA. First of all it's the only semi-manic portable I've played period, which it has that going for it, and the game looks, plays, and sounds great. Another cool thing is the clear influences of other games such as Battle Garegga and Crusader of Centy. I also didn't notice any of the flaws people mentioned in this topic like choppiness, so maybe they are playing it on an emulator or something. The only downside I see is that the game is a bit easy to begin with, and since you can purchase power-ups whenever you want, that makes it even easier. So I would definitely suggest cranking up the game to at least hard when you play it. In all, I can say I was definitely pleasantly suprised by this game.

To be honest, I never really cared about console standards. I find Gradius Galaxies and Nemesis to be better than many console shooters. Invader doesn't sound too bad, but it sounds like yet another game using elements from many other games. It works if the elements are implemented properly, but it really keeps a game from shining as much as it should. I think doujin standards is probably a better comparison, especially since these paticular GBA games borrow from other games.

I like Iridion II, but I don't like how it only has a handful of useful weapons. However, it's not a big flaw since the game design encourages sticking with one weapon. The buying weapons thing in Invader does sound poorly implemented, especially since it doesn't seem to be necessary in the first place with the variety of power ups that can be found outside of the shops.

Invader sounds like something worth picking up for cheap, but not something worth spending a lot of money on.

I've still got the rom. and I've got it for free.

You can beat this game easily if you constantly use the savestate.

Then you also have that useless Lock on Missile a la Raystorm
which you can't lock on a damm ground type enemy that is not shooting you point blank.

Yes, but that's cheating. ;) lol

I think it's been made clear that the weapons are a bit unbalanced, but thanks for the info on the laser. I to plan get some more GB/GBC shmups like Aero Star, Space Invaders GBC, SWIV, and maybe Project S-11. That Star Soldier Famicom Mini GBA sounds pretty cool too.

I didn't know this game existed, I was actually looking all over for a game called Kaisertal. I have a rom image of a GBA game by this name that was in a very unfinished stage. (no hits changed scores, no level ends, etc.) I was looking at the screen shots for invader and they look very similar. I loved the rom.

Does anybody know if this game was once called kaisertal?

Someone found working cheats for this game:
Enter the cheats at the title screen. A confirmation color will flash on the screen.

Two secret ships (purple flash):
Up, Right, Down, Left, Up, Left, Down, Right, Select, B

Credits sequence (blue flash):
L, R, L, R, Select, Up, Down, Left, Right, B

Easter Egg developers talking sequence (orange flash):
Up, Down, Up, Down, B, Left, Right, Left, Right, Select, L, R

Pressing Select button while in game skips to next stage (green flash):
Up, Down, Left, Right, Down, Up, Right, Left, B

(?) (pink flash)
Select, B, Left, Right, Select, B, Up, Down

...still haven't figured out what this last code does...

Is it me or this game has reached unbelievable prices? Not yet to Shantae level, but pretty absurd nonetheless.

Got in touch with the developers: the pink code enables a slow-motion game. Will test this and report :)
