What iPad shmups support the iCade from the get-go?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Was wondering what current iOS shmups for the iPad support the optional iCade Bluetooth powered joystick controller from the get-go?

Is it possible to swap out the stock iCade joystick & use an Seimitsu or Sanwa one instead? Read somewhere that the stock iCade push buttons can be swapped out and replaced with 30mm sized Sanwa or Seimitsu buttons for better durability and ease of use.

Tis a shame that there's no iCade support for all the Cave iOS shmup titles. Would be ace to play iOS DDP-Resurrection with an 8-way digital joystick + four button layout properly.

And will DDP-SDOJ be developed/released for the iOS iPad platform as well?

Raiden Legacy supports it, as does Gridlee MAME (if you managed to get it before it was pulled from the store). I believe there's a Metal Slug game that's supposed to support it (forget which one) but I couldn't get it to work.

You can replace the stick and buttons, I had mine replaced though didn't do the mod myself. AFAIK the button holes are 28mm so need enlarging to get 30mm buttons in. It's less work to use GoldLeaf buttons, which use a 28mm hole, if you are okay with the feel of leaf buttons. The stock buttons are pretty bad and very loud.

I find that the bluetooth connection is a bit dodgy, it seems to miss the odd button press, though playing R-Type through MAME it would occasionally do a slightly charged shot - which indicates that it sometimes failed to register the button being released, rather than pressed. I found it best to play Raiden Legacy witih autofire left on because of this.

Thanks for the 411 on that info, Mr Halibut. I missed the chance of getting the Gridlee Mame game off of the Apple store when it was available for a short time as I finally got an iPad mini recently. So yeah, it would've been nice to play all those other Mame shmup titles through the Gridlee Mame app without the need to jailbreak the iPad mini itself. Is it still available to d/l from another site other than the Apple site or not?

I've heard of leaf-based buttons and leaf switch based joysticks used in the early 1980s arcade cabinets -- quite a different & softer tactical feel compared to those microswitched type of joysticks & push buttons used nowadays (especially with the current Japanese game center scene). I do have an unused & brand new South Korean made leaf switch based 8-way digital joystick, so that might come in handy for such an iCade project mod.

So it seems that it'd be best to get the iPad mini jailbroken and then, play those iMame releases with an iCade right? What's the best iOS related Mame app to d/l in terms of being able to play 'em with an iCade (jailbroken, of course) and without those pesky & annoying pop-up ads as well?

Yeah, I can see when the company decides to use subpar parts when making the iCade (in terms of manufacturing-wise) to lower the overall production costs in the long term. It's business as usual.

On a sidenote, the iOS racing games of Asphalt 8 & Ridge Racer Slipstream are quite slick but it'd ace if they had built-in Bluetooth controller support rather than tilt/touch screen controls.

Wouldn't MFi controller support (e.g. SteelSeries Stratus) introduced with iOS 7 put the iCade protocol into a legacy status?

MFi = "Made For iPhone/iPod/iPad"
Didn't know Zanac MSX was on the App Store.

I replaced stick and buttons with all Sanwa parts myself. I used a fine sanding wheel on a Dremel to slightly enlarge the holes for the buttons. If you do it very gradually and test-fit often then you don't have to do a super neat job of it because the 'surrounds' for each button will cover the edges of the hole.

I think the iCade SDK provided to developers is pretty simple so it should be easy enough for devs to keep including it in games if they are so inclined, but with the MFi standards available, they'd have to feel doing the work for one controller was worth it. I don't see the SDK being incompatible with Xcode any time soon...but that doesn't mean game makers will feel motivated to use it.

So with that in mind, you might wanna do what I did. I think the iCade is pretty cool (especially modified) and an inexpensive, albeit smaller, alternative to having a MAME cabinet. So I have an older (read cheaper) iPad that I've jailbroken and has MAME (including Gridlee version) on it, and basically just sits in an iCade. If you can find a not-quite-current iPad and just relegate it to this job... you don't have to worry about iCade staying current.
